Staying overnight at Hotel New York in Rotterdam is an experience in itself. This iconic hotel exudes history and atmosphere, and has an extra special meaning to many Rotterdam residents. And as if that wasn't enough, we stayed in one of the hotel's most unique rooms: the Torenkamer Maaszijde. A stay to remember!
From Holland America Line to Hotel New York
In 1901, the so-called administration building is designed, making the first branch of the Holland America Line in the Netherlands a reality. A few years later, in 1908, the building was expanded to include a warehouse at the rear, and in 1913 a single tower as tall as 38 meters was added to the office. A second identical tower and a new facade followed in 1917. This completes the building and can still be admired today. For years, HAL operated from this iconic building on the Kop van Zuid until in 1977 the headquarters moved to Seattle. After years of vacancy, even though squatters lived in the building for a year, the building came into the hands of the Municipality of Rotterdam in 1989. With support from the municipality, time and effort is put into a renovation and realization of a hotel and restaurant. The time finally came in 1993, Hotel New York is officially opened.
Hotel New York: a step back in time
As soon as you open the imposing wooden revolving door of Hotel New York, you feel as if you have stepped back in time. The original details, such as the staircase and old photographs of the Holland America Line, still tell the story of yesteryear. With 72 rooms, none of which are the same, the hotel offers a unique blend of history and modern comforts. But the crown jewels of the hotel? Those are undoubtedly the two tower rooms.
Tower room Maas side
During our overnight stay, we slept in the Tower Room Maaszijde, a spacious and cozy room spread over two floors. The second floor offers a sitting area, a large desk, a luxurious bathroom with both a bathtub and two showers, and, of course, a comfortable double bed. But the highlight of the room? The old steel spiral staircase that takes you to the top floor. Here, high up in the tower, a panoramic view of Rotterdam's skyline awaits. By day you can see the city bustling, by night you enjoy a magical display of lights on the water. We could sit here for hours and simply enjoy everything around you.
Luxury and comfort in a historic setting
In addition to the unique atmosphere, Tower Room Maaszijde also offers modern conveniences that will make your stay extra comfortable. Think soft bathrobes, a hair dryer (always handy!), a well-stocked minibar and a coffee and tea facility. Just relaxing in the sitting area with a cup of tea and a view over the Meuse River? Definitely a must!
Dining out at Hotel New York's restaurant
A stay at Hotel New York is not complete without a visit to the café-restaurant on the first floor. The high ceilings, robust pillars and industrial details create a characteristic atmosphere. The menu is extensive and also offers plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Extra fun: there is a sushi and oyster bar where you can watch the chefs at work.
Want an even more exclusive experience? Then NY Basement, the fine-dining restaurant in the basement, is a must. Here you'll enjoy culinary delights and delicious cocktails in an intimate setting.
