If there is one thing we love immensely while traveling, it is wandering through historic cities and authentic villages. So too in Turkey During our journey across the Lycian Way, a long-distance hiking trail in Lycia. In this region you will encounter an awful lot of remains of Lycian times, as well as many traditional villages. One of them is the mystical city of Sidyma, of which (a part) today is also called Dodurga. This place is a hidden gem in Lycia and due to the remains of ancient glory is definitely worth exploring.
The archaeological site of Sidyma on the Lycian Way
Sidyma is an archaeological site and is located near the increasingly popular long-distance hiking trail the Lycian Way on Turkey's southern coast. Yet it is not crowded. A shame, because it is an incredibly interesting and virtually unspoiled place with a rich history. The fact that it is not so touristy is mainly because it is a bit more difficult to get there. Sidyma cannot be reached by car, so you will have to hike quite a bit to get there. Also, in terms of history, little is known about Sidyma, so it is not always mentioned in documents about this time. But that makes it a unique destination!
How to get to Sidyma? Â
The archaeological site is way off the beaten path, so don't expect signage. Head toward the village of Dodurga and then follow the brown signs to Sidyma. The road comes to a dead end at some point. Then follow the coordinates 36°24'06.0″N 29°12'19.2″E To get there.Â
The ruins and other remains in Sidyma, Lycian Way
The historic city of Sidyma is particularly special because of the tombs you can find here. Sidyma is a treasure trove of ornate tombs. The tombs are over 2,000 years old and range from sacrophages and house tombs to pedestal tombs. Some architectural styles can only be found here.
Today, despite the drought, the area is covered with magnificent old olive trees. Goats and sheep graze on the nearby slopes. After a walk across shaded paths with pebbles and some climbing and scrambling through the olive groves and meadows you will see dozens of these monuments. Some are virtually pristine while others are unfortunately damaged. Other remains can also be found, such as a temple, bath, stoa and a church.
The traditional village of Dodurga
Sidyma is interesting not only for its ruins but also for the fact that the beautiful village of Dodurga was built among the remains, charmingly reusing pillars and other old pieces in the villagers' houses and other structures. A mosque can also be admired in Dodurga.
The village of Dodurga has about 80 inhabitants. Most villagers in Dodurga live a simple farming life. We experienced the residents as incredibly friendly and hospitable. The villagers are not at all pushy, but rather are very happy and surprised when they meet tourists!
