What is there to do in Alanya? More than enough! There are lots of fun to do's and attractions in Alanya. The Turkish resort is popular not only because of the wonderful Mediterranean climate, the many hours of sunshine and the fine beach, but also because there is a lot to do! For example, you can visit the medieval castle and take a boat trip, but for the daredevils, you can also do some great paragliding in Alanya! These are all our tips for what to do in Alanya, Turkey.

1. Visit the medieval castle on the mountain

One of the beautiful sights in Alanya in Turkey is the medieval castle on the mountain, called Kalesi in Turkish Alanya. Located 250 meters above the sea, the castle is the pride of Alanya. The castle was built in the thirteenth century AD. Within its walls are several impressive ruins such as a Byzantine church and wells. But at least as beautiful is the walk down from the castle! Along the way you will pass insane viewpoints where you will have a panoramic view of the city of Alanya. There are several nice stalls where you can buy souvenirs and restaurants where you can stop along the way for a cool drink and some goodies.

You can take the walk either up or down, but with the soaring temperatures in Alanya, we would recommend taking a cab up and walking down at leisure.

2. Visit the DamlataÅŸ Cave

The DamlataÅŸ Cave in Alanya is small, but fun to see. It is a 15,000-year-old natural cave and is one of the mysterious beauties in Alanya. The DamlataÅŸ Cave was found in 1948 when it was opened for quarrying during the construction of the harbor. The name of the cave comes from the stalactite that consists of water droplets: the stalactites and stalagmites. In the summer months, it is a nice place to cool off, as it is always around 22-23 degrees Celsius.

3. Opt for a zipline adventure

An activity for the daredevils among us: ziplining. With Zipline Alanya you float like a bird through the Taurus Mountains and feel the adrenaline rush through your veins as you reach a speed of about 120 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, do not forget to enjoy the panoramic view! Prices for ziplining are around €75 per person.

4. Take a ride on the cable car

The cable car is one of the newest additions to Alanya. The tourist attraction was opened a few years back, in 2017. You will find it next to the Damlatas cave. The cable car is 300 meters high and 900 meters long and offers stunning views of Alanya. Actually, you should do the cable car ride twice, because both during the day and in the evening (with all the twinkling lights) you will be amazed. You can also use the cable car as a means of transportation to the mountain on which the castle stands.

The cable car is open from 9:30 am - 11:00 pm.

5. Have a picnic by the Dimçayı (river).

Have lunch at a floating restaurant, watching locals fish and people swim, while enjoying a picnic in a shady spot amid lush greenery. You can do this at the Dimçayı (Dim River) in the mountains east of Alanya's city center. The area around the river has been developed as a natural picnic spot, where you can swim, eat good food and relax. You can book a tour in advance to Dimçayı (for example, in combination with a day trip through the Taurus Mountains), as well as addressing a cab driver and asking for a "picnic spot.

6. Visit the Red Tower

The Red Tower, although this color is debatable, is considered the symbol of the city. Thus, not only does it shine on every tourist magnet, but the tower is also the shining centerpiece of Alanya's flag. Although this watchtower once played an undeniable role in the defense of the peninsula, today the Red Tower serves only as an imposing attraction. For a friendly price, you can climb the 33-meter-high tower, although the view from the base is equally magical. Combine your visit to the tower with a walk across the harbor, where the most unusual pirate boats dock daily.

7. Take a hike to the Sapadere Canyon

One place we love to visit every time near Alanya is the Sapadere Canyon. It is one of the most impressive ravines in Turkey and because of this, it is not only a popular spot among tourists, but also among locals. It is a very peaceful and unspoiled natural place, located in the middle of the Taurus Mountains.

The Sapadere Canyon is 750 meters long. The hike to the canyon is not very strenuous. Within about 30 to 40 minutes of hiking on well-maintained trails, you will arrive at the canyon. Despite having a wooden path, it certainly doesn't detract from the scenery. You hike through impressive mountain scenery and a picturesque valley. In addition to the ravine, you will find several waterfalls and rich flora and fauna in the area. If you are brave, you can take a leap into the ice-cold spring water!

A visit to Sapadere Canyon can be combined well with a picnic at one of the picnic areas.

A boat trip is actually always a good idea, no matter what destination you are in. When the temperatures soar, there is nothing better than boating. You have a nice breeze, can take a refreshing dip in the water and often there is also a lot to see during such a boat trip. Also along the coast of Alanya you can make several nice boat tours. For example, you can take a boat trip with one of the striking pirate boats which you can find in the harbor, but there are also sunset cruises.

9. True adrenaline rush: go paragliding

For the real daredevils, it is also possible to paraglide in Alanya. We have done this and found it really great! Full of adrenaline you take a run up the Yassı Tepe hill (on the Taurus Mountains) at 700 meters before slowly descending to the famous Cleopatra beach. During the flight you will enjoy the most beautiful view of the turquoise water and coastline of Alanya.

Prices for a flight start at about €70.00. You can check the paragliding tour online booking, but also organize on the spot in Alanya.

The most popular market in Alanya to visit is the Friday market. This market is held in the center of the resort near the Dolmus station (the bus station). The market opens early in the morning after sunrise and does not close until the sun sets again. But the finest time to be there is still as early as possible! The market sells all kinds of products. From fruits and vegetables to clothing and spices.

Of course, you can also book a separate flight. Keep in mind that there are two airports near Alanya: Antalya Airport and Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport.
