What is the nicest neighborhood in Rome to stay in? A question that is difficult to answer. Because in such a charming city as Rome, you will find some very cozy neighborhoods worth considering. The most visited - and also our favorite - neighborhood to stay in is Trastevere, but other interesting neighborhoods in Rome include Trevi, Monti and Vatican City. Each district has its own unique character, but they have one thing in common. And that is the atmospheric squares, nice restaurants and beautiful sights. Read more about Rome's nicest neighborhoods and our tips per neighborhood to stay in below.

1. Trastevere

If you want to experience traditional Italy, the best place to stay is in the Trastevere district. Typical of this district are its narrow streets, quaint trattorias, always busy squares and vibrant nightlife. Local life takes place outside here and this is especially noticeable in the evening when the squares turn into cozy and festive meeting places. A famous place to experience this for yourself is in Piazza di Santa Maria.

In addition, Trastevere is known for its colorful character and is a sight in itself, yet the neighborhood will not attract a large number of visitors. And that, of course, is an advantage, as it allows Trastevere to retain its authentic and typically Italian atmosphere. The district is easy to explore on foot, or by Vespa for the extra experience. Be sure to walk past Basilica di Santa Cecilia, as this is one of the oldest churches in Rome.

You probably understand that we are fans of the Trastevere neighborhood, and it is a very nice place to stay in Rome. It is bursting with hotels, hostels and other accommodations. Our tips for great hotels in Trastevere are:

Hotel Relais Trastevere Rome

Relais Le Clarisse

This insane 4-star hotel is centrally located in the Trastevere district and within walking distance of some wonderful sights. The hotel is clean with comfortable rooms and a charming courtyard garden. The price for an overnight stay fluctuates. On average, you pay between €110 and €300 per night, per room. This depends on whether you visit Rome in the low or high season.

2. Monti

The Colosseum is not only the icon of Rome, it is also the landmark of the trendy Monti district. Walking through the district, it is hard to imagine the enormous transformation that has taken place here. In fact, Monti used to be a poor working-class neighborhood where there was a lot of prostitution. Nowadays Monti is very trendy and attracts many artists and designers to the district. You will find many nice (vintage) stores, bars, cafes and restaurants. Popular hotspots to remember are pizzeria Chicco di Grano and café Ai tre Scalini.

A great tip to do in the Monti district is to visit the Mercatomonti market, this large vintage market takes place on weekends. The weekends are always bustling in Rome, but did you know that Monti's central square, Piazza Madonna dei Monti, is the place to be? Monti is genuinely one of the nicest neighborhoods in Rome, both for sightseeing and for staying. These are two of our favorite hotels:

Salotto Monti

Salotto Monti

You'll find Salotto Monti in Rome's historic city center. It is a crazy place to stay. We especially love the rooftop terrace from where you have panoramic views, but besides that, the characteristic rooms definitely attract our attention as well. Prices range between €140 and €300 per night, depending on the season in which you travel.

3. Trevi

Throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain is on many a bucket list. Indeed, it is said that if you toss a coin over your right shoulder into the fountain, you will return to Rome. If you throw in two coins at the same time, you will find your love in Rome. And at three coins you will marry a Roman. Now we are left with the question, how many coins will you throw into the Trevi Fountain during your visit to Rome?

Not surprisingly, the name of the Trevi district is derived from the famous and impressive Trevi Fountain. The Trevi district is described as romantic and atmospheric. Therefore, you will find many beautiful boutique hotels and cozy b&bs here. How special would it be to look out from your hotel room on the most beautiful fountain in Rome?

Hotel Cinquantatre

In Rome's most romantic district, you also can't help but find very fine hotels. One of them is the beautifully located Cinquantatre with comfortable rooms and a rooftop terrace. Generally, prices range between €150 and €250 per night, per room.

4. Vatican City (and immediate surroundings)

Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Not only is it one of Rome's must-visit attractions, it is also a very nice place to stay. To be clear, you cannot stay in the Vatican City itself.

Vatican City is known worldwide and its biggest attraction is undoubtedly St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world. The church is located in St. Peter's Square, one of the most famous squares in the world. It is a destination where many tourists come daily, this makes the area of Vatican City very busy and cozy. If you stay in a hotel in this area, you will have the advantage of visiting Vatican City before the masses. Be sure to take advantage of this.

Handy to know is the closer you stay to the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica, the more expensive the accommodations become. Here's our tip for you:

Hotel Arcangelo Rome

Hotel Arcangelo

When it comes to the interior of the hotel and its rooms, it may not immediately catch your eye. Nevertheless, Hotel Arcangelo is a very pleasant and comfortable place to stay. If only because the hotel is located in one of the nicest areas of Rome. You pay between €120 and €250 per night, per room. Breakfast is included as standard.
