Explore Rome by bicycle

If you ask us, renting a bike is a must-do in Rome. It is a fun activity where you can discover a lot of the city in an active and fast way. After all, with the crowded public transport and roads, you can often get to your next destination faster by bike. By the way, on a bike you really look your eyes out, and your legs don't get tired as quickly. Our daily bike ride led us from the atmospheric Trastevere through the Tiber River to the sights in the historic city center. My favorite place to bike in Rome is along the banks of the Tiber, here there is a wide path from where you have a nice view of the approaching sights and bridges.Ā

We rented our bikes from Bici Baci in Rome. There are three branches in the city, so there is always one near you. You'll find Bici Baci near the Colosseum, Repubblica and Spagna metro stations. You pay €12.50 a day for a rental bike here.

Take advantage of the Roma Pass

Are you visiting Rome for several days and planning to go down a number of sights? Then using the Roma Pass a very good idea. You can use public transport and visit two places of interest. There are two passes available, the 48-hour pass and the 72-hour pass (from €55 per person).Ā

The Roma Pass gives you access to two attractions (check the list!), discounts on other attractions and unlimited travel on public transportation. Keep in mind that some attractions require you to reserve a time slot so you can visit them with your Roma Pass!

Stay overnight in one of Rome's nicest neighborhoods

Rome consists of 21 neighborhoods, but which ones are the most fun to explore? As a tourist, you mainly visit the neighborhoods where the most beautiful sights and fun hotspots can be found. Think for example of Trevi where you will find the iconic Trevi Fountain. Each neighborhood in Rome has its own unique character and appeal. And that is what also makes Rome so attractive. To get a good idea of the city and to stay central at the same time, we like to share our 4 favorite neighborhoods in Rome. In our opinion, these are the neighborhoods you must have seen, and where you can find some very fine hotels.

Trastevere is the-place-to-be for those who like to discover Rome's vibrant nightlife, but Monti is also a hip spot where tourists love to visit.

Spend an afternoon at the beach

It can be incredibly hot in Rome, sometimes even too hot to visit the sights. Should that be the case, consider spending an afternoon at the beach near Rome. Rome is not directly adjacent to the coast, but the beach is fairly quick and easy to reach.

Take the train to Ostia Lido, which takes about 30 minutes. The train ride itself is fun with beautiful views of the Italian countryside. Once you arrive at Ostia Lido you can take the bus (No. 5) to Faber Beach. There are several beach clubs with private beaches where you can rent a bed, and there are public beaches where you can lie on the sand with your towel.

Eating out at the best hotspots in Rome

That there are many nice restaurants and bars in Rome will not surprise you. The squares are full of restaurants where you can eat delicious gnocchi and pizza, and on every street corner you will find an ice cream parlor. You will not lack for good food in Rome. In any case, we are happy to share our 4 favorite hotspots in Rome with you!

What is the best travel time to visit Rome?

Rome is one of the busiest cities in Europe, so try to travel to the city outside the high season and vacation periods as much as possible. For example, early in the spring (April - May) or just in the fall (September - October). During these months the temperature in the city is also a lot more pleasant than in the height of summer. It can get as high as 40 degrees then, which is not a pleasant temperature for a city break.Ā

Book your city break to Rome at a discount!

Did you already know that tour operator TUI often has great discounts on booking a city break? Because although our preference is often to book flights separately through Skycanner and a hotel through Booking.com, it can be a lot cheaper to book a package tour through TUI. Take a look at the TUI website. In fact, you will find regular offers with early bird discounts or great last minute deals!
