Discovering hotspots in Rome is one of our favorite things to do during a city break. You might wonder why? Well we definitely have an answer to that. And that is that the combination of Mediterranean atmospheres goes very well with Italian cuisine. So besides visiting the most beautiful sights in Rome, we love to go out and discover the best coffee spots, ice cream stores, bars and restaurants. So in this article we share with you our 4 favorite hot spots in Rome!
1. Giolitti
You can't be in Rome without eating an Italian ice cream. You will see an ice cream store on almost every street corner, but should you really want a really good ice cream our favorite is Giolitti. The selection of ice cream is unimaginably large, so large that you will probably be left hesitating until you are allowed to order. The ice cream at Giolitti is homemade, which is why it tastes so good. A fun fact about Giolitti is that in 1960, during the Olympic Games, they created an ice cream coupe that was labeled the most special ice cream coupe in Italy!
Address Giolitti: Via Degli Uffici Del Vicario 40, 00186 Roma
2. Streetcar Depot
The way to discover hotspots in Rome that locals love is to ask a local for a tip. That's how we ended up at the cozy Streetcar Depot. A place where Italians like to stop for a drink after work. Streetcar Depot is located in a beautiful spot next to Testaccio Park. The bar is built, as you might suspect, in the shape of a streetcar. The accompanying terrace consists of classic tables and chairs and is further surrounded by atmospheric lighting. A typical Italian cocktail to try here is, of course, a Negroni or an Aperol Spritz!
Testaccio is one of the 21 neighborhoods in Rome and a cool attraction here is the Pyramid of Cestius. An unusual sight you might think, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, several pyramids were built in Rome during Cleopatra's time.
Address Tram Depot: Via Marmorata, 13, 00153 Roma
3. Grazia & Graziella
When we were in Rome on a city break several years ago we visited the hotspot Grazia & Graziella. At the time it was located in the nice neighborhood of Trastevere, but now you can find this hotspot in the Appio-Latino district. This restaurant is very well known among locals, so it is not surprising that queues form in front of the restaurant. What cuisine can you enjoy here? That is, of course, Italian cuisine. And believe us, the tiramisu is SO good!
Address Grazia & Graziella: Piazza Scipione Ammirato, 7, 00179 Rome RM
4. Freni e Frizoni
Are you up for a night out? Then you must be in the Trastevere district, as this is one of the 4 nicest neighborhoods in Rome. The place is bustling with cozy restaurants and bars where both Italian and international students love to come. Next to the Tiber and close to Ponte Sisto you will find Freni e Frizoni, a very nice bar to have a drink. From the higher terrace you have a view over the streets of Trastevere.
