Visiting the Dalí Theatre-Museu is one of the interesting activities you can do in Figueres, but what else does this city offer? Figueres is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, one of the most extraordinary artists of the 20th century. And although many activities revolve around the characteristic artist, the city of Figueres offers much more to see and experience. Discover with our tips the most beautiful sights and fun activities to do in Figueres!
The Catalan city of Figueres
Figueres is one of the most famous cities of Catalonia, an autonomous region in northeastern Spain. Because of its location near the French border and on the Costa Brava, it is a very popular destination among tourists during the summer months. Of course, this is also because Figueres is the birthplace and final resting place of surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.
1. Visit the Dalí Theatre-Museu
The artist Salvador Dalí is a true household name. Not only in the art world, but also precisely in Catalonia. We know the world-famous artist for his extraordinary works of art, of course, but he is almost as well known for his extravagant personality.
The most important and famous sight in Figueres is the Dalí Theatre-Museu. The former theater has been a museum since 1974 and is dedicated entirely to artist Salvador Dalí. At the Dalí Theatre-Museu, you will take a look inside his idiosyncratic art, as well as his controversial thoughts. With his influential art, Dalí contributed to expanding the boundaries of artistic expression by exploring and representing the subconscious. In Dalí's art you can see different styles throughout the years, the most notable being surrealism. You can look around endlessly without getting bored for even a second (even if you are not normally a museum fan).
2. Eat out at Hotel Duran's restaurant
The hotel we stayed at in Figueres is Hotel Duran which is located in an elegant mansion in the heart of the city. For nearly 200 years, the Hotel Duran has been a household name in Figueres, and that is partly because Salvador Dalí was a regular visitor to the hotel's restaurant. The Celler de Ca la Teta, the place where Dalí liked to sit in the restaurant, is decorated with farming tools and paintings. This spot in the restaurant is therefore a tribute to the artist. And a nice place to admire in Figueres!
Hotel Duran
The four-star Hotel Duran is beautifully located in a stately mansion in the historic heart of Figueres. The rooms are basic, but fully equipped. You can park for free in front of the door here. For a double room, you pay an average of between €70.00 and €100.00 per night. Breakfast is included in the price.
Would you like to eat here? Then it is advisable to make a reservation in time as it is a popular and well-regarded restaurant. The menu is full of goodies like Catalan Fideuada, a regional specialty.
3. Explore downtown Figueres
Because many tourists come to Figueres specifically for the Dalí Theatre-Museu, they almost forget that there is more to discover. For example, explore Figueres using Ruta Dalí. This is a route mapped out along important places of Dalí, such as his birthplace and Iglesia de Sant Pere where he was baptized. By the way, you can follow the route using tiles with an ant on them.
The Iglesia de Sant Pere is also well worth a visit. The church dates from the 10th century and was built in Romanesque style. In the 14th century the church received a Gothic makeover and in the 16th century new stained glass windows were installed. Around the church you will find cozy terraces where it is great to linger in the summer.
The central square in Figueres is La Rambla, where of course you can admire a small Dalí artwork. Around the square are beautiful buildings, including some in the architectural style modernismo. A style you may be familiar with from other Spanish cities such as Barcelona and Girona.
Should you want to visit other museums in Figueres? Then you can consider Museu d l'Empordà and Museu del Joguet de Catalunya. Tip: keep your ticket of the Dalí Theatre-Museu, because with this you can visit the other museu for free.
4. Visit the winery Celler La Vinyeta
About a 20-minute drive from Figueres you will find the town of Mollet de Peralada known for growing vineyards and olive trees. And one particular winery you can visit here is La Vinyeta where as many as 20 grape varieties grow in the vineyards.
The winery has recovered the model of traditional farming, where vines live in harmony with livestock and olive trees. Chickens feed on leftover grapes, sheep graze in the vineyards and bees encourage biodiversity. In front of each vine is a rose bush, as these act as a kind of alarm for fungi and therefore can help the winemaker keep the grapes healthy. For example, the roses signal when there is a danger of disease.
The vineyard is located in one of the best areas of the Empordá region. The natural conditions here are ideal for the growth and cultivation of vineyards. Garnatxa, Carinyan, Moscat and Macabeu are the main grape varieties grown in the region. The cellar at La Vinyeta produces red, white, rosé and dessert wines.
Wine making here goes hand in hand with making other products such as honey, olive oil, cheese and eggs. It's a great place to immerse yourself in Mediterranean culture and enjoy good wine and local delicacies. In addition, there are organized all kinds of fun activities such as tours, picnics, lunches and cooking workshops.
5. Take a trip to Cadaqués
Salvador Dalí remained loyal to Catalonia all his life, never moving far from Figueres. His father came from the coastal town of Cadaqués, so this destination served as a source of inspiration for many of his artworks. In a small bay near Cadaqués you will find Salvador Dalí's house, which, like the Theatre-Museu, is an absolute must-see. Cadaqués in itself is a very cute village on the Costa Brava. You can have great food, nice walks, enjoy the beach and experience the real vacation feeling. These are 7 great tips for in Cadaqués.
