When I discovered this place in Brazil, I instantly fell in love: Paraty! This colonial town brims with history and culture, while offering pristine beaches, lush jungle, and cascading waterfalls. All the ingredients for an exotic getaway! Paraty is perfectly located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, making it a must-visit stop on any itinerary in Brazil. Wondering what to do in Paraty? Here are the top things you shouldn’t miss.
1. Wander through the historic center of Paraty
In Paraty’s historic center, there’s beauty everywhere you look: colorful colonial houses, cobblestone streets, artisan stalls, street musicians, and lively terraces full of atmosphere. It feels like an open-air museum. For photography lovers, Paraty is pure paradise, every corner is more picturesque than the last.
You could easily spend an entire day exploring Paraty, but if you prefer to avoid the crowds, head to the historic center in the early morning (around 8 am). Late afternoon is also a magical time, as the town truly comes alive. With the sun setting, Paraty becomes even more enchanting. Terraces fill up, the sound of Brazilian samba drifts from the restaurants, and it’s the perfect moment to sit back, soak up the atmosphere, and indulge in local cuisine.
2. Discover Paraty's most beautiful beaches
Looking for the best beaches in Paraty? You’ll be spoiled for choice. Since the historic town of Paraty lies right on the coast, some of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches are just around the corner. With crystal-clear waters framed by the lush Atlantic rainforest, these beaches are true hidden gems. And thanks to the endless coastline, you’ll always find a quiet spot to spread out your canga and unwind. My personal favorites are Praia do Meio, Praia do Cachadaço, and Praia do Trindade.
These beaches are located a bit further from Paraty’s historic center, in the small fishing village of Trindade. Although Trindade technically belongs to the municipality of Paraty, it lies about 26 km away and can be reached in 30–40 minutes by car. That’s why having a rental car in Paraty (and in Brazil in general) is highly recommended, as it gives you the freedom to explore gems like this. A reliable option for car rental is Sunnycars.
3. Hike to the natural pool, Piscina Natural do Cachadaço
One of the must-do activities in Paraty is the hike to the natural swimming pool, Piscina Natural do Cachadaço. This unique pool is formed by a section of the sea sheltered by massive rocks, with a depth of no more than one meter in most areas. While there aren’t many fish inside the pool itself, I still recommend bringing a snorkel, because just beyond the rock barrier you’ll discover vibrant and colorful marine life.
The Cachadaço natural pool is located at the far end of Praia do Cachadaço. To get there, you’ll follow a scenic 30-minute trail through lush, jungle-like surroundings. The hike isn’t the easiest, but it’s absolutely worth it. The reward is one of the most breathtaking spots in Paraty.
4. Try local Brazilian delicacies
If there’s one reason I’d return to Brazil, it’s the food. Brazilians truly know how to cook. While many know the country for its famous rodízios and perfectly grilled meats, Brazilian cuisine offers so much more. And one of the best places to experience this diversity is in Paraty.
Amongst my favorite restaurants in Paraty are Bartholomeu in the historic center and Le Gite d'Indaitiba, set in an incredible natural location. At Bartholomeu, I enjoyed one of the most delicious bobós, a traditional Brazilian shrimp dish, and at Le Gite d'Indaitiba, I experienced a unique fusion of French and Brazilian cuisine.
A nice place for a cup of coffee in Paraty is Café Pingado. Be sure to try a brigadeiro, Brazil’s famous chocolate truffle, also often available from local street vendors. And you can’t leave Paraty without tasting cachaça, Brazil’s iconic spirit, commonly enjoyed in the classic cocktail, the caipirinha.
What is the best place to stay in Paraty?
During my time in Paraty, I stayed at Chales Internacional. This charming and cozy pousada (a traditional Brazilian guesthouse) offers not only comfortable rooms but also a truly unique setting with plenty to explore. Imagine stepping out to a nearby waterfall or discovering a historic building with a hydroelectric generator that powered the entire village over a century ago! Depending on the season, rooms range from €50 to €100 per night, making it an unforgettable stay that’s both authentic and affordable.
Would you rather stay in Paraty's city center? Then Pousada Valhacouto and Pousada Flores da Terra are amazing choices. Both are just a short walk from Paraty’s historic center. At Valhacouto, rooms typically range from €100 to €150 per night, while Flores da Terra offers a cozy stay starting at just €56 per night. Perfect options for comfort and convenience right in the heart of the city.

5. Hike through the jungle and discover the mix of biodiversity and adventure
After five weeks traveling through Brazil, I can confidently say that Paraty stands out as one of the most enjoyable destinations. Why? Because of its unique blend of history, culture, and nature. Paraty is incredibly green, almost entirely surrounded by lush rainforest. Hiking trails wind through dense vegetation, revealing hidden waterfalls and crystal-clear streams. Famous falls like Cachoeira do Tobogã and Cachoeira da Melancia are highlights, but the jungle is dotted with countless smaller waterfalls waiting to be discovered.
Have a rental car? Then be sure to explore the area around Paraty. It’s full of scenic spots and rewarding hikes waiting to be discovered.
