Are you dreaming of an unforgettable journey through Brazil? Get inspired by this exciting 2–3 week itinerary through the diverse state of Rio de Janeiro! Brazil is an enormous country bursting with culture, nature and vibrant cities, which means there are countless ways to explore it. This route through the state of Rio de Janeiro is one of our top recommendations. You’ll experience the iconic energy of Rio de Janeiro city, stroll through the charming colonial streets of Paraty, relax in the trendy beach towns of Búzios and Cabo Frio, and unwind on the tropical paradise of Ilha Grande. In this article, we share the ultimate Brazil itinerary with insider tips on destinations, must-see sights, places to stay and local hotspots. The route is based on a two-week trip, but if you prefer to travel at a slower pace, you can easily stretch it to three weeks.

Day 1-4: Rio de Janeiro

Start your adventure in Brazil in the vibrant city Rio de Janeiro, with the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, the Statue of Christ and the lively beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. We recommend staying at least 4 days in Rio de Janeiro during your trip in Brazil. This way you will have a nice balance between the most beautiful sights and laid-back beach life in this bustling metropolis. After all, you are on vacation!

The best sights in Rio de Janeiro

First up on the itinerary is a cable car ride to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain. From there, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the bay, and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. The best times to visit are early morning or around sunset, when the light is magical and the crowds are smaller.

On day two, it’s time to visit the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. The drive through Tijuca Forest up to the top of Corcovado Mountain is an experience in itself, and once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable panoramic view of Rio. Be sure to also stop at Mirante Dona Marta viewpoint. Not only does it offer stunning views of the city, but it’s also the best spot to admire the Christ statue up close.

On day three, dive into the vibrant Lapa neighborhood, famous for its lively samba clubs and the iconic Selarón Steps. Don’t miss wandering through the nearby hip and bohemian Santa Teresa district, full of charming streets and creative energy.

On your last day, relax at the world-famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, where you can experience the local life of the cariocas.

What is the nicest place to stay in Rio de Janeiro?

If you are visiting the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, it is important to choose a nice and, above all, safe place to stay. Urca, Botafogo, Ipanema and Leblon are the best neighborhoods to stay in.

Accommodations we recommend are the cozy boutique hotel Plaza Spania Boutique Hotel and the simple, but comfortable Ibis Budget Hotel in the Botafogo neighborhood. Are you looking for a luxurious stay? Then the beautiful five-star hotel Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort is amazing.

Day 5-7: Ilha Grande

After your stay in Rio de Janeiro Ilha Grande is the ideal destination to completely unwind and immerse yourself in unspoiled nature. This tropical paradise offers not only tranquil beaches, but also beautiful hiking trails and fun boat trips. We recommend staying here for three days to fully explore the island while enjoying the relaxed island life.

The best activities on Ilha Grande

Start your adventure on Ilha Grande with a beautiful boat tour around the island. This tour will take you to idyllic spots such as the Lagoa Azul (the Blue Lagoon), Praia Do Caxadaço, Praia De Dois Rios and Praia Do Aventureiro. Along the way, you can swim and snorkel in the crystal clear waters and discover the colorful underwater world. It is best to leave in the morning to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy the tranquility. Opt for a private boat trip for a more personalized experience and don't forget to bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen.

On your second day, get ready for one of the island’s most beautiful hikes: the trail to Praia Lopes Mendes. Often ranked among Brazil’s most stunning beaches, Lopes Mendes is located on the island’s east coast. The roughly 7 km hike from Vila do Abraão takes you through lush jungle and past secluded beaches, rewarding you with powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters, and impressive waves. If the full hike feels a bit too demanding, you can take a water taxi to Praia do Pouso and then enjoy a short 10-minute walk to Lopes Mendes.

End your stay on Ilha Grande with a relaxing day in Abraão, the vibrant heart of the island. Wander through its charming streets, enjoy a refreshing açai bowl, and shop for typical Brazilian souvenirs like Havaianas flip-flops and bikinis. Abraão offers a cozy atmosphere with lovely restaurants and boutique shops.

After exploring Abraão, spend a peaceful afternoon at Palma Beach, one of the island’s quieter and more secluded spots. It’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up some extra relaxation.

What is the nicest place to stay on Ilha Grande?

There are plenty of charming places to stay on Ilha Grande during this Brazil itinerary. You won’t find any big hotel chains here, which means you’ll always enjoy an authentic local experience. Something we think makes your trip extra special!

You’ll find several affordable pousadas beautifully situated with stunning sea views, perfect for fully unwinding in a peaceful, secluded setting, such as Pousada Toca do Mar in Palma Beach. Are you looking for a lively atmosphere and want to enjoy a drink at a bar in the evening? Then staying in Abraão is definitely your best choice.

Day 8-10: Paraty

After the relaxing days on Ilha Grande, it's time to head to Paraty in Brazil, a beautiful colonial town with a mix of history, culture and nature. Located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Paraty is a must-see destination during your round trip.

The best activities and attractions in Paraty

Start your day in Paraty’s historic center, wandering through narrow cobblestone streets lined with colorful colonial buildings. Paraty feels like an open-air museum and is the perfect place to soak up Brazil’s rich culture and history. Begin early, around 8 a.m., to beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the city.

In the late afternoon, Paraty truly comes alive. Enjoy a delicious meal on one of the many terraces as the sun sets and the vibrant sounds of Brazilian samba fill the streets.

On the second day in Paraty it's time to discover the most beautiful beaches in the nearby fishing village of Trindade, about a 30-40-minute drive from Paraty. Rent a car to reach these idyllic spots. Spend your day at Praia do Meio, Praia do Cachadaço and Praia do Trindade, where you will be amazed by the crystal clear waters and the beautiful Atlantic jungle in the background.

For some adventure, take a short 30-minute hike through the jungle at Praia do Cachadaço to the natural pool Piscina Natural do Cachadaço.

On your last day in Paraty, it's time to explore the town's verdant surroundings. The region around Paraty is surrounded by lush jungle, making this destination extra special. Take a hike through the dense vegetation and discover hidden waterfalls such as Cachoeira do Tobogã and Cachoeira da Melancia. Do you have a rental car in Paraty? Then you can easily combine several hikes and stop at local attractions along the way.

What is the nicest place to stay in Paraty?

During our Brazil itinerary, we stayed overnight in Chales Internacional in Paraty. This is a simple, but very cozy pousada. And typically Brazilian! Would you prefer to stay in the historic center of Paraty? Then Pousada Valhacouto and Pousada Flores da Terra good options.

Day 11-12: Búzios

After Paraty, it’s time to head to another dreamy Brazilian destination: Armação dos Búzios, or simply Búzios. Enjoy the relaxed vibe and warm hospitality of this stylish coastal town, renowned for its stunning bays and lively hotspots.

The best things to do in Búzios

Did you know that Búzios was the favorite getaway of the world-famous French actress Brigitte Bardot? She loved this seaside town so much that the promenade, called Orla Bardot, was named in her honor, and there’s even a bronze statue of her there. Thanks to her, Búzios is often called the Saint-Tropez of Brazil.

On your first day, we recommend beach hopping, as Búzios is blessed with an abundance of stunning beaches. Start at Praia Brava, one of the most beautiful spots in the area. You can reach the beach via a rocky path. It's ideal for morning sunbathing and swimming in the crystal-clear waters! Another favorite is Praia de João Fernandes, where you can snorkel, kayak, or go stand-up paddleboarding, as well as relax on the sand.

For lunch, there are several amazing hotspots in Búzios, such as the stylish Madame Bardot Restaurant, located by the sea. Enjoy fresh fish overlooking the ocean. After lunch visit Praia dos Ossos, a historic beach once used for storing whale bones, but now an idyllic spot with a traditional fishing colony. Take a short walk to the nearby Sant'Anna Church, where you will have a nice view of the village and the sea.

In the evening, it is time to explore the vibrant part of Búzios: Búzios Village. Stroll down the cozy street Rua das Pedras full of trendy boutiques, cozy bars and good restaurants.

On the second day, we recommend a hike on the Orla Bardot. End your day at Praia de Manguinhos for the most beautiful sunset. Find a spot on the Porto da Barra pier and watch the sun disappear into the sea.

In Búzios, you have plenty of charming accommodations to choose from, ranging from simple pousadas to luxury resorts. For an authentic Brazilian experience, we recommend staying at one of the cozy pousadas scattered around the peninsula. A nice accommodation to stay in Búzios is Pousada Tartaruga. Looking for something more exclusive? Then the five-star Insólito Boutique Hotel & Spa is definitely your best choice.

Day 13-14: Cabo Frio

A perfect way to end your Brazil itinerary is by spending a few days in Cabo Frio, where crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches invite you to unwind and soak up the sun.

The best activities and attractions in Cabo Frio

On the first day, we recommend visiting Praia do Forte, one of the most famous beaches in the region. This elongated beach is incredibly popular among the locals. It is a very nice place to sunbathe and swim, and there are also plenty of restaurants along the promenade. For example, try a delicious açai ice cream here! Near the beach you will find the historic Forte de São Mateus, which is also well worth a visit. Enjoy the view of the Cabo Frio coastline here.

In the afternoon, enjoy shopping along the famous Rua dos Biquínis, also known as “Bikini Street.” This lively street is your go-to spot for colorful bikinis, swimsuits, bottoms, and accessories, with nearly every shop offering a fantastic selection.

In the evening, it's time to explore the trendy Bairro da Passagem. This historic neighborhood is bursting with charm with its cobblestone streets, small squares and cozy bars with live music. It is, if you ask us, by far the nicest place in Cabo Frio. For dinner Restaurant Borogodó Nordestino is highly recommended. This is the place to taste authentic dishes from Brazil’s northeast.

On day two, don’t miss the Feira de Artesanato, an artisan market that has been a staple in Cabo Frio for over 20 years. Here you’ll find all kinds of local products, from handmade souvenirs to delicious snacks. It’s a great place to pick up a special memento of your Brazil trip on your last day!
