After a few days in the bustling city of Salvador, this car-free fishing village on the island of Tinharé feels like the perfect escape to sun, sand, and sea. But don’t be fooled, because there’s plenty to see and do here. From hiking up to the lighthouse and exploring secluded beaches to sampling the best local cuisine, Morro de São Paulo offers a mix of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences. Here are our top tips for making the most of your stay in this hidden gem of Bahia in Brazil, including what to do, where to eat, and the highlights you shouldn’t miss!
Morro de São Paulo on Tinharé: discover the authentic fishing village in Bahia, Brazil
Morro de São Paulo — you might think it’s near the bustling metropolis of São Paulo, right? Not at all! The two have nothing in common and couldn’t be more different. Nestled on the island of Tinharé, off the coast of Bahia, Morro de São Paulo is a charming, car-free fishing village. Many travelers refer to it as “the island” Morro de São Paulo, but the island’s actual name is Tinharé. The village is the most popular of the five settlements on the island, yet it has only recently been discovered as a tourist destination, keeping its authentic, unspoiled charm intact.
Morro de São Paulo is conveniently located near the vibrant city of Salvador and is therefore often combined with a visit to this city. The village is perched on a hill (or “morro”), with a lively center full of charming bars, restaurants, and local shops. Its coastline is lined with five beautiful, adjacent beaches, each buzzing with activity and offering the perfect mix of sun, sand, and authentic Brazilian vibes throughout the day.
How do I get to Morro de São Paulo?
The most convenient way to reach Morro de São Paulo is from the city of Salvador, located about 64 kilometers from the island. You can take a speedboat or catamaran from Salvador’s maritime terminal, right in front of Mercado Modelo. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, offering scenic views of the Bahia coastline along the way.
Boat trips from Salvador to Morro de São Paulo run daily, with round trips operated by three main companies: Biotur, Ilha Bela, and Morro Lighthouse. We opted for a catamaran and booked our tickets through Bahia Terra Turismo. This platform compares the different options offered by the shipping companies. Prices for a one-way trip range from around 130 to 150 Brazilian Reais, which is approximately €20–€25 per trip (as of 2025).
Keep in mind that there are no taxis waiting at the port of Morro de São Paulo. Traveling light with a backpack is therefore much more convenient, as you may have to walk a bit to reach your accommodation. We brought a suitcase on our trip to Brazil but decided to leave it at our hotel in Salvador, since you will likely return there before continuing your journey through the country. Should you still want to take your luggage to the island, you can use the so-called “wheelbarrow taxis” (literally a wheelbarrow), which will transport your bags to your hotel.
The best things to do in Morro de São Paulo
Tinharé Island is famous for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Unsurprisingly, popular activities include scuba diving, windsurfing, and fishing. Adventure seekers can also explore scenic hiking trails through the island’s lush hills. Beyond its natural beauty, the island has fascinating historical sites to discover. Morro de São Paulo is the vibrant heart of Tinharé, full of trendy bars, cozy cafés, and restaurants where you can soak up the lively Brazilian atmosphere.
1. Learn about the history of Morro de São Paulo
Morro de São Paulo wasn’t always the trendy vacation spot it is today. Its history is far more intense than you might expect for such an idyllic beach town.
In 1535, the Portuguese established the first settlement on the island, at the site of today’s Morro de São Paulo. Over the centuries, the village played a strategic role in helping the Portuguese defend their colonial capital, Salvador, and the surrounding waters from Dutch, French, and pirate attacks. Thanks to its prime location, the island once served as a fortress against invaders. Some remnants of these historic forts and castles remain, including the impressive Forte de São Paulo, which you can explore during your stay on the island.
2. Visit the Morro de São Paulo lighthouse
The Morro de São Paulo lighthouse was built in 1855 and is one of the main attractions on the island. It is hidden amidst tropical vegetation and gives you a panoramic view of the various beaches. The hike up takes around 20 minutes, and trust us, it’s more than worth it! Once at the top, you can not only admire the incredible scenery but also get your adrenaline fix with the zipline that lands on the First Beach (Primeira Praia).
3. Take a mud bath at the Paradão de Argila (the clay wall)
Another must-visit spot on Morro de São Paulo is the Paredão de Argila, a striking clay wall on Gamboa Beach. This 60-meter-high rock formation is famous for its natural mud baths. Legend has it the clay works wonders on your skin, and locals and tourists alike don’t need a second invitation! If you spot people strolling along the beach completely covered in mud, you’ll know exactly where they’ve been.
To reach the clay wall, simply stroll along Gamboa Beach. Just make sure you head back before the tide comes in, otherwise, you’ll need to hop on a water taxi. Don’t worry, these boat rides are easy on the wallet!
4. Take a look at the photogenic little church: Igreja Nossa Senhora da Luz
The island’s oldest church, Igreja Nossa Senhora da Luz, dates back to 1628. Over the years, it has been lovingly renovated, and its name honors the island’s patron saint. With its stunning Baroque architecture, this historic church is a must-see when exploring Morro de São Paulo.

As you head further along the coast, the crowds thin out and the atmosphere becomes more serene. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean, get your adrenaline fix with the zipline, and end your tour at Quinta Praia to soak up the sun with a cool drink in hand. You’ll find plenty of sunbeds to rent along the beaches, and several beach tents serve up tasty snacks and refreshing drinks. Perfect for a full day of sun, sea, and relaxation.
Looking for ultimate peace and quiet? Head to Porto de Cima Beach. Tucked away near the Morro de São Paulo pier, it’s often missed by travelers—a real hidden gem! The turquoise and emerald waters are framed by lush forested hills, creating a picture-perfect setting. The best part? Especially in the low season, the beach is almost completely deserted. Aim to visit early, when the tide is low, so you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the sand.

Morro de São Paulo is a paradise for food lovers! Think fresh seafood, traditional Brazilian dishes, tropical cocktails, and charming little spots with stunning sea views. 1. Papoula
The little restaurant Papoula is a hidden gem on Morro de São Paulo. We stopped here for lunch and enjoyed a refreshing fresh juice of orange and strawberries, but what really wowed us were the seafood dishes. Tip: don’t miss the shrimp served in pineapple or the salmon with passion fruit sauce. Feeling adventurous with dessert? Go for the cupuaçu mousse! We’ve spent more elsewhere on the island, but honestly, we haven’t eaten this well anywhere else.
2. Casa Velha Pizzaria Bar
Sweet pizza? Oh yes, and you’ll mostly find this Brazilian twist only here! In Morro de São Paulo, pizza isn’t just pizza: think mozzarella with chocolate and strawberries, or other wild combinations you’ve never imagined. One of our favorite spots to try these tasty creations, all while enjoying a stunning view, is Casa Velha Pizzaria Bar.
3. Restaurante Sabor da Terra
The restaurant Sabor da Terra has been a beloved spot in Morro de São Paulo for nearly 20 years. A true hotspot for seafood lovers, most dishes showcase fresh catches and traditional Bahian flavors. Located right in the heart of the village, Restaurante Sabor da Terra is a must-visit. Don’t leave without trying the bobó de camarão, a rich and creamy shrimp stew that’s pure Bahia on a plate.

Many feature lush gardens with exotic flowers, tropical plants, and even vibrant blue hummingbirds. Thanks to their hillside locations, plenty of these accommodations also offer stunning sea views, the perfect backdrop for a relaxing island getaway.
Our personal recommendation is Pousada Residence Vila das Flores. This villa is located in a jungle-like setting with breathtaking views. All while being close to the hustle and bustle of the island. This stay will cost you about €80 per night, so it is also affordable luxury.
What is the best time to visit Morro de São Paulo?

Morro de São Paulo enjoys a tropical climate, meaning warm weather all year round. Temperatures stay fairly consistent, ranging from around 25 °C to 30 °C. The main difference lies between the dry and rainy seasons, but the water at the beaches remains pleasantly warm even during the rainy months.
The rainy season in Morro de São Paulo lasts from February to August. Even on the slightly cooler days during this period, temperatures rarely drop below 20 °C, which can make the weather feel humid and muggy. The dry season, from September to January, brings much less rainfall. For the best weather, plan your visit during the summer months, between October and March.
Keep in mind, however, that the island gets very busy during Christmas and New Year, as many Brazilian tourists flock here. Visiting in November, like we did, can be perfect: the weather is beautiful, the sun is shining, and the crowds are much more manageable.
