São Paulo is the vibrant metropolis of Brazil. While São Paulo may not be known as Brazil’s most beautiful city, it more than makes up for it with its unmatched cultural richness. From impressive museums and vibrant neighborhoods to a thriving culinary scene, there’s no shortage of things to explore. You could easily spend several days discovering everything this dynamic metropolis has to offer. Starting your Brazilian adventure in São Paulo, affectionately called "Sampa" by locals, is definitely a great idea. But what exactly should you do here? Explore iconic spots like Ibirapuera Park and Beco do Batman, and dive into the city’s incredible gastronomy. In this article, we’ll guide you through São Paulo’s best tips, activities, and hotspots!

1. Catedral da Sé

One of the most iconic sights in São Paulo is the Catedral da Sé, located in the heart of the city. This impressive cathedral, built in neo-Gothic style, is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also an important historical and spiritual site. The square in front of the cathedral, Praça da Sé, is the geographical center of São Paulo. Be sure to also take a look inside the cathedral: the beautiful stained glass windows and the imposing organ are worth seeing!

2. Mercado Municipal de São Paulo

Want to really taste the flavors of São Paulo? Then head to the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo. Try exotic fruits like jaboticaba and the cashew fruit and eat the iconic mortadella sandwich.

This gigantic sandwich, filled with sometimes as much as 300 grams (!) of Ceratti mortadella, melted cheese, tomato and lettuce, is a culinary legend. What makes the sandwich truly special is not only its taste, but especially its impressive size. The origins of this mega sandwich go back to the 1930s, when a chef, out of frustration, served a customer with an absurdly stuffed sandwich to quiet him down. The result? An iconic dish that is now a must-try when visiting São Paulo!

3. Beco do Batman in Vila Madalena

One of the nicest neighborhoods in São Paulo, if you ask us, is Vila Madalena. Indeed, in this colorful and artistic neighborhood you will find Beco do Batman. This striking alley is an open-air gallery full of impressive street art, created by both local and international artists. The walls are covered with an ever-changing mix of creative and inspiring artwork.

You will also find stalls where you can buy nice souvenirs and there are several hot spots. A nice place to eat near Beco do Batman is the Italian restaurant Forno e Flora. Do you love shopping? You'll also find a store of one of our favorite clothing brands of Brazil in this neighborhood: Farm Rio

4. Avenida Paulista

Avenida Paulista is the beating heart of São Paulo. Walking down this street, you will understand why São Paulo is also called the "New York of Brazil. The iconic Avenida Paulista is not only a cultural and tourist center, but also the city's business district, with countless offices, bank buildings and international companies. You will find here, among other things, the impressive MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo), known for its unique design and impressive art collections.

Avenida Paulista is always worth a visit, but if you are in São Paulo on Sunday, this is the perfect time to explore the street. This is because on Sundays the boulevard is car-free and turns into a lively open-air party, with market stalls, delicious eateries and live music.

5. Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP).

Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). is one of Brazil's best-known museums. The museum is famous for its impressive collection of Western art, from masterpieces by our Dutch Van Gogh and Rembrandt to modern art by Tarsila do Amaral and Candido Portinari.

Not much of an art lover? Then do take a stroll past MASP when you head to Avenida Paulista. In fact, the unique building, designed by architect Lina Bo Bardi, is a work of art in itself. The glass pillars make the building seem to float above the street.

An entrance ticket costs R$ 70.00, converted about €11.00 per person (2024). Please note that currently MASP from the outside is under maintenance. You can, however, just visit the museum.

Situated inside the iconic Pacaembu Stadium, this museum takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of Brazilian soccer, from legendary players like Pelé to unforgettable moments on the pitch. The museum features interactive exhibits and vintage video footage, giving you a deeper understanding of soccer’s huge impact on Brazilian culture. Even if you’re not a big soccer fan, a visit to the Museu do Futebol is still a fun and engaging experience.

An entrance ticket costs R$ 24.00, converted to just under €4.00 per person (2024).

7. Ibirapuera Park

Ibirapuera Park is a peaceful oasis right in the heart of São Paulo and one of the largest and most beautiful urban parks in Brazil. Walking through it, we couldn’t help but think of New York’s Central Park. Here, locals, known as “Paulistanos”, jog, bike, and walk their dogs, enjoying the green space amid the city buzz. The park is also home to important cultural landmarks, including the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and the iconic Oca Pavilion.

9. Liberdade neighborhood

São Paulo may not be the most beautiful city to visit, but what it lacks in aesthetics, it more than makes up for in culture. Take the Liberdade neighborhood, for example. Liberdade is São Paulo’s main Japanese district and one of the city’s most unique areas. With its red torii gates, traditional lanterns, and numerous Asian shops and restaurants, it’s easy to imagine yourself in Japan for a moment. Here, you can enjoy authentic Japanese dishes like ramen, sushi, and takoyaki, and find unusual souvenirs. On Sundays, the neighborhood truly comes alive with the weekly market in the central square. Liberdade is not only a treat for your taste buds but also a cultural hotspot that beautifully showcases the Japanese influence in São Paulo. A visit to this neighborhood is a must during your stay in the city!

What is the best place to stay in São Paulo?

São Paulo is a huge city, and choosing the right neighborhood to stay in can really shape your experience. Popular and safe areas to stay include Jardins, an upscale neighborhood full of restaurants, shops, and green spaces, and the area around Avenida Paulista. Also Consolação is a good option, with many nice restaurants and bars and a lively atmosphere.

For those who enjoy luxury and tranquility, Higienópolis and Morumbi are the ideal neighborhoods. These are São Paulo’s most affluent neighborhoods and among the safest, although they are located a bit farther from the city center.

Would you like to stay in the heart of the city? Then consider a hotel in Centro. We chose Hotel Slaviero São Paulo Downtown, a comfortable and centrally located hotel. However, for extra safety, be sure to take a cab when traveling from this area at night. Although you’re close to sights and restaurants, it’s still best to avoid walking, even if it’s just a 10-minute stroll.

The best restaurants in São Paulo

If you know us even a little, you know that travel and gastronomy go hand in hand for us. We get so excited discovering local hotspots and great fine dining spots. And we can tell you: São Paulo’s culinary scene truly impressed us! This city is a paradise for food lovers, offering a huge variety of flavors and styles, from sophisticated fine dining to creative fusion restaurants.

One of the absolute highlights was our visit to A Casa do Porco, which has been included in the prestigious list of the 'The World's 50 Best Restaurants'. At this restaurant, it’s all about pork, prepared in a way that will make your taste buds cheer.

Another favorite was Ama.so Peruano, a Peruvian restaurant with dishes inspired by the rich flavors of the Amazon.

Safety in São Paulo

São Paulo is a city of contrasts, and wealth and poverty are very close together here. Therefore, it is not unusual to see huge differences in living standards. In São Paulo you will find luxury shopping malls and countless fine dining restaurants, sometimes practically next to slums where enormous poverty prevails. One of the most striking aspects of inequality in the city is the number of homeless people you encounter on the streets. For us personally, this was quite intense to see, especially since much homelessness in Brazil is associated with drug use. Of course, you cannot fully prepare for culture shock when traveling to São Paulo and other places in Brazil, but it is good to be aware of the situation in advance and take the necessary safety precautions.

Thus, it is important to always stay alert, especially in crowded areas and in neighborhoods that are less touristy. Carry as few valuables as possible, such as jewelry and cameras. Also, do not go to remote areas and urban slums. In the evening, we recommend always grabbing an Uber if you go out to eat, for example. In doubt during the day? Then also just take an Uber to the location you want to go to. It's very inexpensive to travel by Uber in Brazil, so when in doubt, it's actually always worth it. You can also always ask at your hotel and in stores about safety.

São Paulo as a starting point for your journey through Brazil

São Paulo is the perfect starting point for exploring Brazil. This bustling metropolis immediately immerses you in vibrant culture and offers excellent connections to other must-see destinations. From São Paulo, you can easily travel to stunning spots like the beaches of Ubatuba and the charming colonial town of Paraty, the iconic city Rio de Janeiro and the paradisiacal Ilha Grande.

Several major airlines offer flights to São Paulo from various international hubs, including Air Europa, KLM, LATAM Airlines, and Lufthansa. These carriers provide convenient connections to Brazil’s largest city from all over the world. As we are based in The Netherlands, we chose Air Europa. With a stopover in Madrid, you'll arrive relaxed in the bustling city of São Paulo.
