This is where slaves were once brought into the country illegally under the guise of transporting chickens. Fortunately, those days are over, and today Porto de Galinhas is a place of freedom and fun. Everywhere in the village, therefore, you will find the colorful chickens as a memento of the past.

In this region you can find many "natural pools", some up to 10 meters deep where you can swim in lovely warm water amidst tropical fish and seahorses. But also the village of Porto de Galinhas, Vila de Porto de Galinhas is highly recommended. These are our tips for what to do in Porto de Galinhas!Ā
1. Enjoy the Brazilian atmosphere at Porto de Galinhas Beach
By far the most famous beach in Porto de Galinhas is the eponymous Porto de Galinhas Beach. It is the town's main beach and is one of the most lively spots in the region. The beach is famous for its natural pools that form at low tide, allowing you to swim among colorful fish in shallow, warm water. Besides swimming and sunbathing, you can also take a traditional jangada boat ride here to get a closer look at the underwater world.
The beach is one of the busiest in the region. You may not come here for your rest, but it is a fun place to witness Brazilian life. For example, people play soccer on the beach and all sorts of carts pass by with Brazilian delicacies like aƧaĆ, corn on the cob and cheese sticks from the grill. A fun hot spot on this beach is Caldinho do Nenem. This popular restaurant serves delicious Brazilian dishes. You can take a seat on the terrace or rent a bed on the beach.Ā
2. Relax in the natural pool at Muro Alto Beach
Are you looking at a postcard of Porto de Galinhas? Chances are you see Muro Alto beach on it. It is a lovely beach with large natural snorkeling pools formed along the shoreline.Ā The name "Muro Alto" literally means "High Wall" and is derived from the fact that along the coastline of Muro Alto Beach you will find a 150-meter-long reef that looks like it was made by human hands because of its perfect shape that resembles a wall. Between the shore and the reef lies a gigantic natural pool full of warm, calm water. The ideal place to relax and catch some sun rays in the water!Ā
3. Work on your surfing skills at Cupe Beach
Cupe Beach is a quieter alternative to Porto de Galinhas Beach. This beach is popular with surfers because of its strong waves. It is popular among beginner surfers as well as more advanced surfers. There are also other water sports practiced here, such as stand-up paddling and bodyboarding. Also, don't look surprised if you see baby carriages driving around here. In fact, in Porto de Galinhas it is quite common to drive baby carriages on the quiet deserted beaches.Ā
Do you come to the beach mainly to relax? Then you will also find quieter stretches of beach here. Here you can enjoy the sun and the sound of the ocean in peace!Ā
4. Stroll through the village of Vila de Porto de Galinhas Beach
The picturesque village of Porto de Galinhas with its many alleys, terraces and stores is a must visit both during the day and at night. You immediately get a vacation feeling when you walk around here, partly because of the colorful umbrellas. It is a cozy mix of restaurants and quaint boutiques. The village streets are bustling, especially in the evening when the eateries come alive. You'll also find a fun craft market where you can score souvenirs.Ā
One restaurant we recommend is La Tratoria, although not typically Brazilian, but if you are fond of Italian food it is very tasty.Ā
5. Take a trip to Praia dos Carneiros
The most beautiful beach in Porto de Galinhas? That's Praia dos Carneiros. This beach is actually not in Porto de Galinhas, but in TamandarĆ©, a town down the road. It is about an hour's drive from Porto de Galinhas. Here you imagine yourself in a tropical paradise with swaying palms, soft sand and a clear blue sea. A special feature on the beach is the small white church that has watched over the beach since the 18th century. Get here early because as the day progresses, this beach gets busier and busier!Ā
For a luxurious beach day, we recommend the Carneiros Beach Club to. But of course, you can also choose to just find a nice spot on the beach under a palm tree.Ā
How to get to Porto de Galinhas? Ā
Porto de Galinhas is easily reached from Recife, the nearest major city. From Recife International Airport it is about an hour's drive to Porto de Galinhas. You can take a cab or rent a car to get there. Often trips to Porto de Galinhas are therefore combined with a visit to the city of Recife, as well as the colonial town of Olinda Is close by and incredibly fun!Ā

Porto de Galinhas enjoys a wonderfully warm climate throughout the year. The summer months are mostly dry and sunny, while the winter months have a bit more chance of rain. However, the rainy season, which runs from March to August, does not mean you have rain every day. You can still have very sunny days.Ā
The best time to visit Porto de Galinhas is between late December and the end of Carnival. During these months, the weather is at its best, with bright sunshine and clear skies. Moreover, this is a festive time, as many Brazilians have vacations then and the atmosphere in Porto de Galinhas and surrounding coastal towns is vibrant and lively. All over the region, preparations for Carnival are already becoming visible.Ā
Do you come more for tranquility? Then October and November are excellent months to visit Porto de Galinhas. There are fewer tourists then, rainfall minimal, and prices are also generally lower.
