The itinerary

Day 1–2

Tirana

Your journey through Albania begins in Tirana, the colourful capital where old traditions meet a young, creative energy. At first glance, it might not look like the most conventional European capital, but that’s exactly what makes Tirana so interesting. Visit Skanderbeg Square, the beating heart of the city, and discover the many sides of Tirana. From the colourful buildings and cosy cafés of the Blloku neighbourhood to the historic bunkers that offer a glimpse into Albania’s communist past. Tirana is also a great introduction to Albanian cuisine. Settle into a local restaurant, try traditional dishes such as tavë kosi and experience the warm Albanian hospitality you’ll encounter throughout the rest of your journey.

Days 3–5

Theth

From Tirana, head north as the landscape gradually begins to change. The bustle of the city gives way to winding mountain roads, deep valleys and dramatic peaks. You’ll arrive in Theth, a remote mountain village in the Albanian Alps and one of the most beautiful places in the country. Theth feels like stepping back in time. Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Accursed Mountains, you’ll find traditional stone houses, small guesthouses and local families who welcome visitors with open arms. Life here isn’t about luxury, but simplicity, nature and the warm hospitality of the Albanian mountains. Several beautiful hiking trails start right from the village. Hike to the iconic Blue Eye of Theth, a crystal-clear natural spring hidden among the mountains, or make your way to the Grunas Waterfall for spectacular views across the valley. Looking for more of a challenge? The famous Valbona Pass hike makes an unforgettable addition to this route.

Days 6–7

Berat

After the rugged mountain landscapes of Theth, continue to Berat, one of Albania’s most beautiful and distinctive cities. Known as the ‘city of a thousand windows’, the centuries-old town is famous for its white Ottoman houses cascading down the hillside. Wander through the narrow streets of the historic Mangalem and Gorica neighbourhoods, cross the old stone bridge and explore the impressive castle towering above the city. Inside the castle walls, you’ll still find a lively community, centuries-old churches and beautiful views across the valley and the Osum River. The surrounding region is also home to several wineries, where local grape varieties are grown and you can enjoy a wine tasting among the vineyards.

Days 8–10

Himarë and the Albanian Riviera

After the historic charm of Berat, leave the interior behind and head towards the spectacular Albanian Riviera. Take the impressive Llogara Pass, where the mountains drop dramatically towards the Ionian Sea, and follow one of the most scenic coastal roads in the Balkans. You’ll stay in the atmospheric seaside town of Himarë, a laid-back coastal town where life revolves around small fishing boats, inviting terraces and the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Soak up the authentic Mediterranean atmosphere and you’ll find it easy to linger for a few days. During the day, discover hidden coves, take a boat trip along secluded beaches or drive to idyllic spots such as Dhërmi and Gjipe Beach. In between, settle into a local seafood restaurant, where the catch of the day and a glass of Albanian wine set the scene for a long lunch overlooking the sea. These days are all about slowing down, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the good life.

Day 11–12

Gjirokastër

After a few relaxing days along the Ionian coast, continue to Gjirokastër. The road takes you through a spectacular mountain landscape, with the city gradually coming into view on the slopes of the valley. Gjirokastër is known as the ‘stone city’, and you’ll understand why as soon as you wander through its narrow, cobbled streets. Centuries-old stone houses with distinctive roofs, small artisan shops and atmospheric cafés give the city an almost fairytale-like charm. It’s no surprise that the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Towering above the city is the impressive Gjirokastër Castle, offering beautiful views across the valley and surrounding mountains. Afterwards, continue wandering through the old bazaar, discover local crafts and sample the traditional cuisine of southern Albania.

Days 13–15

Ksamil and the surrounding area

The final part of this journey through Albania takes you to the far south, where the landscape changes once again. From Gjirokastër, head towards the Ionian coast, with one of Albania’s most remarkable natural wonders along the way: Syri i Kaltër, better known as the Blue Eye. This crystal-clear spring lies hidden among lush greenery and feels almost otherworldly thanks to the intense blue of the water. A short walk through the surrounding nature takes you to this remarkable natural wonder, where you can pause for a moment and take in the beauty of the Albanian landscape. Afterwards, continue to Ksamil, a coastal town known for its turquoise waters, small offshore islands and white-sand beaches. Take a boat trip along the coast, swim out to one of the islands or explore the surrounding coves, where the water has an almost Caribbean feel. But there’s more to this region than beaches. Nearby, you’ll find the ancient Greek and Roman city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander among centuries-old ruins surrounded by lush greenery and discover the many layers of history that make this place so fascinating.

The months of May, June, September, and early October are ideal for a road trip through Albania. The weather is pleasant for hiking in the Albanian Alps, exploring historic cities, and relaxing on the Ionian coast. In the spring, nature is in full bloom, and in September, you can often still enjoy summer-like temperatures.

The summer months of July and August are also good options, but be prepared for higher temperatures (often above 30°C) and larger crowds, especially in popular spots like Theth and Ksamil. Prices in the coastal towns are also significantly higher during this time.

During this road trip through Albania, you’ll stay in charming boutique hotels, authentic mountain guesthouses, and cozy accommodations. All overnight stays include a delicious daily breakfast, so you can start each day off right. The starting price for this sample itinerary is based on two people sharing a standard double room (room upgrades or extended stays are available upon request).

Good to know: Our trips are tailor-made and subject to current availability. If one of the suggested accommodations is fully booked for your travel dates, we’ll of course find an equally comfortable and characterful alternative for you. Any local tourist taxes or parking fees are payable directly at the accommodation.

What is it like to drive in Albania, and what are the roads like?

Driving in Albania is a wonderful adventure and quite manageable. The main roads between the major cities and along the Albanian Riviera are well paved. In the mountains around Theth, you’ll drive along winding roads with breathtaking views, where you’ll occasionally share the road with local livestock.

Is this trip a good fit if I want to do the famous Valbona Pass Hike?

Yes, definitely. The standard itinerary is designed to offer a wonderful combination of nature, culture, and beach time. Are you an active hiker and would you like to add the iconic hike between Valbona and Theth to your trip? Be sure to let us know. We’ve hiked this route ourselves, and we highly recommend it. That’s why we’re happy to adjust the logistics and accommodations in northern Albania so that this trip fits perfectly with your hiking plans.

How do you pay in Albania?

The official currency is the Albanian lek, but euros are also widely accepted in many places. In cities, larger hotels and restaurants, you can usually pay by card, while smaller guesthouses, particularly in the mountains, often still prefer cash. If you’d like to pay in euros, it’s a good idea to carry smaller notes. Don’t rely on being able to pay with a €50 note, as smaller guesthouses may not always have enough change.

Is Albania a safe holiday destination?

Albania is generally considered a safe destination for travellers. During our own travels, we experienced the country as welcoming and the local people as friendly and helpful. As with any destination, it’s still important to take sensible precautions and check the latest travel advice before you go. For our tailor-made trips, we work with carefully selected small-scale accommodations and trusted local partners. This allows you to experience the authentic side of Albania while travelling comfortably and with local support along the way.
