Montmartre is without a doubt one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods in Paris, and also our personal favourite. This artistic area in Paris’ 18th arrondissement sits on a 130-metre-high hill and is known for its charming streets, classic French architecture and viewpoints that will genuinely make you pause for a moment. From icons like Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre to photo spots such as La Maison Rose and cosy cafés, Montmartre is loved by both locals and visitors. In this article, we’re sharing our favourite sights, hotspots and practical tips to help you make the most of your visit to Montmartre.

Top sights in Montmartre

These are the must-see sights in Montmartre you shouldn’t miss:

1. Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

Sacré-Cœur is the icon of Montmartre. The bright white basilica towers high above Paris and can be seen from far away. Visiting the basilica itself is free, but you’ll need a ticket to access the dome and the crypt. Go early in the morning if you want to avoid the biggest crowds, also ideal for photos without too many people in the frame. And don’t skip Sacré-Cœur at the end of the day either: the view over the city is magical as the sun slowly disappears behind the horizon.

Tip: bring a bottle of wine and some snacks, and grab a spot on the steps or the lawn around sunset.

2. Place du Tertre

Place du Tertre is the beating heart of Montmartre’s artists’ quarter. On this square, you’ll find artists displaying their work, and you can even have your portrait drawn on the spot. It’s a great place to wander around. The styles vary hugely from one artist to the next.

During the Belle Époque (1872–1914), Montmartre became a magnet for artists thanks to its affordable rents and inspiring atmosphere. Big names like Vincent van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir and Matisse all felt at home here.

3. Rue de l'Abreuvoir (La Maison Rose).

If you want to see Montmartre at its prettiest, make sure to stroll down Rue de l’Abreuvoir. It’s a wonderfully charming street and a perfect snapshot of what Montmartre is all about.

This is also where you’ll find La Maison Rose, the most photogenic restaurant in Montmartre (and maybe even all of Paris). This pink corner building is a well-known Instagram spot, but it’s also a lovely place for lunch. Grab a table on the terrace and soak up the classic French atmosphere.

4. Le Consulat

Le Consulat is, just like La Maison Rose, a well-known photo spot in Montmartre. The café oozes history and is just a short walk from Place du Tertre. Artists like Picasso and Van Gogh used to come here. Today, it’s simply a great stop for a coffee, lunch, or a nice glass of wine.

1. Restaurant Pink Mamma

Housed in a stunning building covered in pink tiles, you’ll find the popular restaurant Pink Mamma. The interior is just as impressive as the Italian food on the menu. The restaurant has several floors, each with its own design. So if you’re here for lunch or dinner, make sure to take a little tour of the building too.

Tip: reservations are recommended!

Practical tips for Montmartre

Getting to Montmartre by public transport

Montmartre is in the north of Paris, in the 18th arrondissement, so you’ll usually take the metro to get there. These are the most convenient stops:

  • Anvers (subway line 2)

  • Blanche (subway line 2)

  • Abbesses (subway line 12)

From these metro stations, you’ll be at the foot of the hill in no time. Not in the mood to climb up to Sacré-Cœur? Take the funicular (a small cable railway) that brings you from the bottom to the top.

2. How much time do you need for Montmartre?

Plan for at least 3 to 4 hours to see the main sights in Montmartre, but you could easily spend a whole day here. It’s just that atmospheric.
