Nessebar is one of the nicest places in Bulgaria. The historic UNESCO town is also called the pearl of the Black Sea coast. This is due in part to its special location, impressive historic buildings and cozy terraces overlooking the sea. If you go on vacation to the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria, for example to Sunny Beach or Pomorie, then a visit to Nessebar should not be missed.
Nessebar, Bulgaria: a charming UNESCO city
Less than 5 km from the popular resort of Sunny Beach you will find Nessebar. This town consists of an old and new part. Where the new part is mainly known as a vacation destination with good hotels on the beach, the old town is loved for its charm. The old part of town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983. It is beautifully situated on a rocky peninsula of some 850 by 350 meters. Inside the ramparts you will find a maze of cobbled streets and remnants of Greek culture, Byzantine churches and Renaissance houses with limestone and wood.
The most beautiful sights in Nessebar
The picturesque town of Nessebar is characterized by historic buildings. For example, there are remnants of 10 different Eastern Orthodox churches that were preserved after the expulsion of the Turks.
1. The Pantocrator Church
The most important church in Nessebar was the Pantocrator Church. This medieval church dates from the 13e century and is richly decorated. The exterior in particular is a picture to behold. The Pantocrator Church is still largely intact and is one of the best preserved medieval churches in Bulgaria.
2. The church of St. Stephen
Like the Pantocrator Church, the Church of St. Stephen is also a former Eastern Orthodox church in Nessebar. The church has been converted into a museum. Inside, the church is decorated with magnificent (well-preserved!) frescoes.
3. The church of St. Sofia
The church of St. Sofia is also known as the old diocese. Unfortunately, much has been lost from St. Sofia Church, so it is no longer immediately recognizable as a church. Nevertheless, the remaining ruins from the 5th century are still beautiful to admire. At certain times of the day, the sunlight shines brilliantly through the arches, making for a special picture!
4. The port of Nessebar
The port of Nessebar with its small boats is fun to take a look at and in the summer has a nice crowd on the terraces you can find here. From the port you can also take several boat trips along the Black Sea coast, such as a catamaran cruise.
The best hotspots in Nessebar
Nessebar is also worth a visit on the culinary front. On the waterfront, you will find all kinds of restaurants with stunning views of the coastline. Some terraces have a little Greek feel to them. But also in the heart of the old town you can find some top restaurants.
1. Restaurant Castro Messembria
For a delicious night out, we recommend Restaurant Castro Messembria. This restaurant is incredibly atmospheric. It is in a great location, in the heart of the old town. There is regularly live music and besides the dishes being delicious, the service is sublime!
2. Messembria Winery
If you love a good glass of wine, we recommend visiting the Messembria winery in Nessebar. We had an incredibly fun wine tasting here! It is a beautiful and charming place in the old town. The tasting is a nice way to learn more about Bulgarian wine ánd is of course very cozy.
3. Cocktail bar Michael's ECO bar
The cocktail bar Michael's ECO bar is not just any old one! In fact, the bar can be found in a cave. How cool is that? It took 7 years to build this cave. Inside you will find a waterfall, turtles swim and there is an extensive cocktail menu with tasty cocktails. They are also very affordable! A must-visit if you are in Nessebar.
4. Restaurant Plakamoto
Restaurant Plakamoto is located among olive trees. It is a beautiful location to stop for a moment to admire the breathtaking view. Directly by the sea, lovely food and very friendly service. Absolutely highly recommended!
