Speicherstadt is known as the largest contiguous warehouse complex in the world. So you can probably imagine that it is impressive to walk around here. The many bridges and rivers make it a place where you can spend hours. Find out what else you can experience in Hamburg's Speicherstadt!
Hamburg's Speicherstadt on UNESCO world heritage list
The Hafencity district is where you'll find the iconic red brick warehouses of the Speicherstadt. But it is also the district where history meets modern architecture. In fact, the well-known Elbphilharmonie is also located in Hafencity, so it is great to combine with a visit to Speicherstadt.
The warehouses in Speicherstadt were built between 1883 and 1927 on several islets in the riverbed of the Elbe. Speicherstadt used to be an important place in the port of Hamburg. Products and goods arriving at the port therefore often entered the warehouses by water. The construction of eight bridges made it possible for the warehouses to be connected to each other and thus also accessible from the street. During the bombing raids during the war, some 50% of the warehouses were damaged, but they were largely restored afterwards.
While walking through Speicherstadt, you will be amazed by the unique views of the warehouses. It certainly does not surprise us that Speicherstadt in Hamburg is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it is beautiful!
