The place name Yerseke in Zeeland may not immediately ring a bell with you, yet this village in Zeeland well worth exploring. Yerseke is located on the Oosterschelde in the municipality of Reimerswaal in Zuid-Beveland and is known for its seafood. Traditionally, mussels and oysters have been farmed here and shipped to various countries in Europe. Yerseke is the place to be to pick and taste oysters, but there is another piece more to discover in this cozy village! We share the best activities and attractions in Yerseke.
The oyster culture of Yerseke
Say Yerseke, you say oysters. In fact, the two are inextricably linked. Oysters were initially fished on "wild banks," but around 1870, artificial farming of oysters began at Yerseke. Dutch oyster farming therefore has its origins in this fishing village. And that's quite special, because Yerseke is not actually originally a fishing village at all.
The origins of the fishing village of Yerseke
That Yerseke became a fishing village came about because of the St. Felix flood in 1530. Much of the land around the town of Reimerswaal was swept away by the flood, leaving Yerseke suddenly on the waterfront. The place proved extremely suitable for growing mussels and oysters. Unfortunately, many oysters were lost in the harsh winter, but the enterprising Yersekeners also thought of a solution. Thus, in addition to the Zeeland flat oyster, they began cultivating Japanese oysters, called creuses. The creuses are now the main product. But the flat Zeeland oyster remains the culinary highlight of Yerseke!
Oyster culture is tangible and noticeable everywhere in Yerseke. Experiencing the sea, seeing the production process and actually picking and tasting the oysters: a visit to Yerseke is a unique adventure.

He took us along the bustle of the harbor, past the wet warehouses and into the Oosterschelde where we picked oysters. We enjoyed our tour immensely.
