Beautiful sights in Vlissingen: what not to miss
Vlissingen boasts a rich history, reflected in the many beautiful sights scattered throughout the city. From historic landmarks to maritime attractions, here are the highlights you won’t want to miss during your visit.
1. Stroll along Vlissingen's iconic promenade
Strolling along the Vlissingen Boulevard is a must for anyone visiting this seaside city. It’s one of Vlissingen’s most iconic sights, where the salty sea breeze, sweeping views over the Westerschelde, and the sight of colossal ships passing just a stone’s throw away create a truly unique experience. The boulevard is divided into three sections, each named after a renowned sailor from the past: Evertsen Boulevard, Bankert Boulevard, and Ruyter Boulevard. Whether you come for a leisurely walk, a sunset view, or simply to watch the endless procession of ships, this is where Vlissingen’s maritime heart beats strongest.
2. Visit the De Ruyter statue: explore Vlissingen’s maritime history
Vlissingen’s rich history is deeply woven into its identity as a seaside resort. One of the city’s most famous sons is Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter, celebrated as a Dutch naval hero for his key role in historic sea battles. However, his legacy has become more complex in recent years, as historians have raised concerns about his involvement in the slave trade, a practice common among many figures of his era.
As you stroll along Vlissingen’s De Ruyter Boulevard, one of the first things to catch your eye is the striking statue of Michiel de Ruyter. Crafted from cast iron in 1841 by Flemish sculptor Louis Royer, the monument shows the famed naval hero standing proudly on a ship’s deck, his gaze fixed on the vast Westerschelde estuary. While de Ruyter has long been celebrated for his naval victories and role in Dutch history, his legacy has come under renewed scrutiny in recent years. Historians and activists have highlighted his involvement in the slave trade, a dark and painful chapter that complicates his image as a national hero. Despite these controversies, many locals in Vlissingen still regard the statue as a powerful symbol of the province’s maritime heritage and the courage of sailors from a bygone era. It stands as a reminder that history is often layered and complex, both a source of pride and reflection, and remains deeply woven into the city’s identity.
3. Explore the Casemates in Vlissingen
De Kazematten is part of Vlissingen’s Keizersbolwerk, the city’s historic fortifications dating back to 1584. During the French occupation, Napoleon had De Kazematten built within the stronghold, a series of five large vaulted chambers designed to protect soldiers from enemy fire. These vaults consist of multiple rooms that served various purposes: from storing ammunition and supplies to providing living quarters for military personnel during wartime. The Kazematten is now part of the Zeeland Maritime Muzeeum. The Kazematten tunnel leads you to a pier where you can soak in peaceful views of the Westerschelde, with the charming Oranjemolen windmill standing proudly on the opposite shore.
4. Enjoy sun, sea and beach in Vlissingen
Beyond its rich history, Vlissingen is also a fantastic seaside resort for beach lovers. Its beaches rank among the cleanest and most enjoyable in The Netherlands. Vlissingen boasts three main beaches: Badstrand on Boulevard Evertsen, Nollestrand, and Westduin Beach. Badstrand is lively and bustling during summer, with bustling terraces and inviting beach pavilions. Nollestrand stands out for its unique sleeping beach houses, offering a special coastal experience. For those seeking tranquility, Westduin is the quietest beach in Vlissingen, perfect for a peaceful escape by the sea.
The wide sandy beaches are perfect for soaking up the summer sun, but even in winter, Vlissingen’s shores offer stunning settings for a long, refreshing beach walk.
