Strolling along the Vlissingen Boulevard is a must for anyone visiting this seaside city. It’s one of Vlissingen’s most iconic sights, where the salty sea breeze, sweeping views over the Westerschelde, and the sight of colossal ships passing just a stone’s throw away create a truly unique experience. The boulevard is divided into three sections, each named after a renowned sailor from the past: Evertsen Boulevard, Bankert Boulevard, and Ruyter Boulevard. Whether you come for a leisurely walk, a sunset view, or simply to watch the endless procession of ships, this is where Vlissingen’s maritime heart beats strongest.
2. Visit the De Ruyter statue: explore Vlissingen’s maritime history
Vlissingen’s rich history is deeply woven into its identity as a seaside resort. One of the city’s most famous sons is Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter, celebrated as a Dutch naval hero for his key role in historic sea battles. However, his legacy has become more complex in recent years, as historians have raised concerns about his involvement in the slave trade, a practice common among many figures of his era.
As you stroll along Vlissingen’s De Ruyter Boulevard, one of the first things to catch your eye is the striking statue of Michiel de Ruyter. Crafted from cast iron in 1841 by Flemish sculptor Louis Royer, the monument shows the famed naval hero standing proudly on a ship’s deck, his gaze fixed on the vast Westerschelde estuary. De Kazematten is part of Vlissingen’s Keizersbolwerk, the city’s historic fortifications dating back to 1584. During the French occupation, Napoleon had De Kazematten built within the stronghold, a series of five large vaulted chambers designed to protect soldiers from enemy fire. These vaults consist of multiple rooms that served various purposes: from storing ammunition and supplies to providing living quarters for military personnel during wartime. The Kazematten is now part of the Zeeland Maritime Muzeeum. The Kazematten tunnel leads you to a pier where you can soak in peaceful views of the Westerschelde, with the charming Oranjemolen windmill standing proudly on the opposite shore.
