Here you will find beautiful, old buildings and numerous cozy restaurants, cozy hotels and nice boutiques.
What to do in Domburg: the most beautiful sights
Domburg is a town in the municipality of Veere, located on the west coast of the former island of Walcheren in Zeeland. The town has about 1,500 inhabitants, but attracts thousands of tourists every year for its beautiful beach, historical sights and lively culture and history. We think it is one of the nicest seaside resorts of Zeeland (and maybe of the Netherlands!) and so we share all our tips in terms of sights and activities in Domburg:
1. Domburg beach
Domburg beach is definitely one of the main attractions of the seaside resort in Zeeland. The wide sandy beach extends all the way to Westkapelle. Like the other beaches in Walcheren, it is known for its characteristic pile heads. But what Domburg is also definitely popular for is its colorful beach houses. We instantly fell in love with Domburg beach once we spotted the cute pastel colors on the cottages.
Accommodations on the beach in Domburg
Hotels and apartments in Domburg are almost all within 50 to 500 meters walk from the beach. For the real beach lovers, there are also opportunities to spend the night in beach houses on the beach. In addition, the province of Zeeland has the most hours of sunshine in the Netherlands during the summer months. An excellent base for a wonderful beach vacation in the Netherlands.
2. The Manteling nature reserve
Domburg is located on the nature reserve "De Manteling. This is a forest area on the edge of the dunes. A huge diversity of animals and plants can be found in De Manteling. The extensive forest and dune area, combined with the pure sea air of the coast of Zeeland, make Domburg a surprisingly diverse vacation destination in the Netherlands.
3. The Domburg Mondrian Route and Hoge Hil
Want to discover more of Domburg? Then the Mondrian route is a must. The Mondrian route is a 5 kilometer walk through Domburg. At the beginning of the 20th century, many artists came to the seaside resort of Domburg for inspiration. One of these artists was Piet Mondrian. The route takes you along the probable footsteps of Mondrian during his stay in Domburg. But even if you have no interest in Mondrian, the route is worthwhile. The route goes mostly on paved paths and takes you to several beautiful places, such as the Hoge Hil. These are the highest dune tops in Domburg with magnificent views of the seaside resort and its surroundings.
Arts and culture sights in Domburg
For lovers of culture and history, there are also interesting attractions in Domburg, such as museums and galleries. You will find on the website Domburg.com An overview of all galleries in Domburg and surrounding areas.
4. Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum
One of the most beautiful museums in Domburg is the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum. This museum is dedicated to the artists who worked in Domburg in the 19th and 20th centuries and is housed in a beautiful building from 1861.
5. Terra Maris Museum
You will also find near Domburg (in Oostkapelle) Terra Maris Museum, the museum of nature and landscape. 'Terra Maris' literally means 'land of the sea,' and so this museum takes you through the history of Zeeland's landscape. It shows you Zeeland's richly varied nature, such as the dynamic nature of the Delta, the many reclamations and the more than one hundred villages that were wiped off the map by the water over the centuries. The museum is housed in the former orangery of Westhove Castle, which is located in the De Manteling nature reserve we mentioned earlier.
Various art galleries
Domburg is also known for the many nice galleries you can find there. Favorite of ours are art gallery Gallery The Northern Light and Gallery Sea Spark with handmade jewelry.
6. The water and lighthouses in and around Domburg
The water and lighthouses in and around Domburg are iconic landmarks. Domburg's lighthouse is a historical monument that dates back to the 19th century and is still in use. The tower is 53 meters high and offers a beautiful view of the town and the sea.
About 10 kilometers from Domburg, in Westkapelle, you will find the Westkapelle lighthouse. At 53 meters tall, this tower is as tall as Domburg's lighthouse and also offers a panoramic view of the surroundings. Moreover, this lighthouse was badly damaged in World War II, but later fully restored.
But there are many other lighthouses to be found in the area. We have drove a route along the lighthouses of Zeeland (and part of South Holland). Highly recommended!
