The history of The Prison Tower
The Gevangentoren has a fascinating history dating back to the 14th century. Originally built as part of the Westpoort, the tower has had various functions over the centuries: from lighthouse and barracks to prison. Criminals used to be locked up through a well in the basement, which earned the tower the name "Prison Tower.
During World War II, the tower was badly damaged by bombing, but was later rebuilt and even raised. Since 1974, a restaurant has been located in the base of the tower, while the upper floors remained unused for many years. In 2016, the top of the tower was transformed into a luxury suite, where you can now stay overnight.
The bombproof
Among Vlissingers, the Gevangentoren is also called "the bombproof. The walls of the tower are as much as 2.5 to 3 meters thick and made of solid stone. People assumed that as long as they stayed behind these walls nothing could happen to them. Unfortunately, during World War II, the Gevangentoren was hit during bombing. A bomb fell on top of the tower that largely destroyed it. Although "the bombproof" turned out not to be bombproof, this is the nickname of the Gevangentoren to this day. After the bombing, the tower was rebuilt, even raised 5 meters in connection with the construction of the boulevard.
