Spend the night in a traditional yurt
A trip that has long been on our bucket list is a tour of Mongolia. A country where nomads still live in traditional yurts. Although this winter experience at Winterwoods is not a tour of Mongolia, you can experience what life is like in a Mongolian yurt. A good first step toward our dream trip. A yurt is a large round tent set up with wooden beams and very cozy and warmly decorated. You can sleep from 2 to 4 people in the yurt. It easily fits one large double bed and two separate single beds.
A traditional yurt is well insulated and is originally used in icy conditions. Therefore, you will not suffer from winter temperatures in the Netherlands. Of course, you can always heat things inside by burning more wood in the wood stove.
What can you do at Winterwoods?
You book an outdoor experience at Winterwoods to get away from it all, away from the hustle and bustle and in search of nature's tranquility. The range of relaxing activities such as yoga and meditation are sure to appeal to you. These workshops take place in the large teepee on the grounds. Would you like to learn more about breathing techniques? Then you can participate in cold training. You will learn to control your body and apply these techniques when you step into an ice bath. Is this going just a little too far for you? Then the spa is a pleasant surprise and the ideal place to retreat. You will find yourself among the deciduous and coniferous trees in a wood-fired hot tub and a Finnish sauna.
Would you rather trek into nature? You can do that too. The surroundings of Winterwoods are perfect for a hike or bike ride. You are here in a wooded area and with a little luck you will spot some wildlife. Upon returning to the campsite, there is nothing better than to sit down at the large campfire and order a glass of mulled wine from the bar.
Nothing must, everything goes. That's how a stay at Winterwoods is set up. You can choose to be on your own and spend time in and around your own yurt, but if you're looking for a chat be sure to join one of the workshops.
The facilities at Winterwoods
When you go camping in nature in the winter, good facilities are important. Fortunately, you do not have to doubt this, because this is all right at Winterwoods. Should you miss or need anything while camping, the crew is always there for you.
Cooking food at the pop-up campsite
Assuming that it is cold but dry outside during your stay, you can cook your food over your own campfire. Each yurt has its own fire pit and with the handy tripod you can hang your pots over the fire. It is a particularly fun way to prepare your own food. Find it hard to estimate what dishes you can make in one pan? They have thought of something at Winterwoods. A week before departure you will receive a recipe booklet with all kinds of breakfast, lunch and dinner tips. In the tent you will find (almost) everything you need to cook, but you have to bring your own groceries.
Is it raining outside? Even then you can still prepare your own food. You can easily prepare a casserole dish on the wood stove, but you can also use the gas stove with two burners in the yurt. To cook, whether on the campfire or on the wood stove, you need wood. So chopping wood is a must-do at Winterwoods, but that too is part of the whole experience.
Showering and going to the toilet
The pop-up winter campsite is equipped with good sanitary facilities. There are two sanitary blocks placed on the site equipped with two showers and two toilets per block. Thus, a total of four showers and four toilets. Also, the sanitary blocks are heated and cleaned daily.
Winterwoods 2023 - 2024
A stay at Winterwoods is always on the basis of 2 or 3 nights in a traditional yurt tent. You can choose from weekend stays (Fri-Sun), long midweek stays (Sun-Wo) or midweek stays (Wed-Fri). The price of the overnight stay includes one bag of firewood and bedding as standard, and you can participate in all activities. Use of the sauna and hot tubs is on a subscription basis.
