Paracas, the atmospheric fishing village on the west coast of Peru, is home to beautiful beaches, fantastic food and so much more. The Paracas National Reserve is home to unique flora and fauna, including the iconic Ballestas Islands. A protected area where you can observe sea lions and humboldt penguins in their native habitat. And all this is just under a 3-hour drive from the capital Lima. With all the things to do in Paracas, you could easily spend two days here!
What to do in Paracas: the best sights and hotspots
A promenade full of stalls selling souvenirs, restaurants and bars, and a harbor full of colorful boats. This is a concise description of Paracas, a small but relaxed village where the sun shines all year round. But what really every traveler comes here for are two unforgettable activities: A visit to the Paracas National Reserve and A boat trip to the Ballestas Islands.
1. Visit the Paracas National Reserve
Stretching over an area of as much as 200,000 acres, you will find pristine beaches and incredible biodiversity. The Paracas National Reserve is a breathtaking place and, in our opinion, the most beautiful place on the coast of Peru. A visit to the reserve takes you past several highlights including Playa Roja: a deep red sandy beach that ends in a beautiful blue sea. Incredibly beautiful!
2. Take a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands
Sea lions, pelicans, penguins and red crabs: these are some of the animals you can spot at the Ballestas Islands. On a 2-hour boat tour, you will sail past the islands and get a glimpse into the lives of the inhabitants of the Ballestas Islands. Millions of birds roam above the islands, staring ahead over the rocks and hunting for food in the seawater. It's a spectacle to behold, especially when a sea lion comes looking curiously above the water with its head.
3. Dine at Rooftop Restaurant Paracas
That Peru is known for its sublime gastronomy can also be experienced in Paracas. On the menu of Restaurant Paracas You will find some Peruvian specialties such as ceviche, ají de gallina and arroz con pollo. We had a delicious meal here, but we especially enjoyed the view of Paracas, the port and the sea. This is because the restaurant is located on the fourth floor. A rooftop restaurant with beautiful views!
Where to stay in Paracas?
Walking through the streets of Paracas during the day, you will encounter few other tourists. This makes sense, as many are visiting the Ballestas Islands or the Paracas National Reserve. By late afternoon, the atmospheric fishing village comes alive and is a very pleasant place to be. Restaurants and bars are packed and from afar you can hear beats banging through the speakers. Be sure to stay one night in Paracas before continuing your travels through Peru!
Aranwa Paracas Resort & Spa
Paracas is a sunny destination where the temperature is pleasant all year round. This therefore makes Paracas a destination for relaxing by the pool or on the beach. A place to completely unwind is Aranwa Paracas Resort & Spa. The name suggests it, because you there is a crazy spa where you can get completely pampered. Moreover, you can also take a classic ceviche workshop here. In short, it is a fantastic place to stay in Paracas.
