1. Explore the iconic colonial architecture

As you stroll through the city center, one thing immediately stands out: the colonial architecture blended with a vibrant Caribbean flair. Stately facades in bold shades of yellow, green, and red demand your attention at every turn. Wilhelminastraat and Nieuwstraat in particular offer a colorful feast for the eyes.

Although many historic buildings were unfortunately lost to modern development, Oranjestad is making a remarkable comeback. The island is embracing its heritage once again, restoring old landmarks into trendy cafés, unique concept stores, and lively spaces. Thanks to creative local entrepreneurs, vibrant new energy is filling the streets!

2. Rum tasting at the Pepe & Margo Distillery

Rum is deeply rooted in Caribbean culture, and Aruba is no exception. Even though sugarcane isn't grown locally, rum remains central to the island’s vibrant lifestyle. That’s why a rum tasting is an absolute must-add to your Aruba itinerary! For a unique local experience that tantalizes all your senses, head straight to Pepe & Margo.

This small-scale rum distillery, located in a historic building (locally known as ‘Cunucu’) in the heart of the city, is one of the most stylish hotspots in Oranjestad. You can visit the distillery on a guided tour that concludes with a tasting. In a cozy setting, you’ll discover not only how rum is distilled here, but also how it’s infused with surprising Aruban flavors such as aloe vera (our personal favorite).

3. Wander through the National Archaeological Museum

Aruba has a fascinating past, making the National Archaeological Museum a must-visit for anyone curious about the island's origins. The museum is housed in the beautifully restored Ecury Complex: a set of historic monuments that are architectural treasures in their own right. Inside, you'll travel through thousands of years of history via interactive exhibits and ancient artifacts. Best of all? Admission is completely free!

4. Check out the best hotspots in Oranjestad

Oranjestad's culinary scene is vibrant, diverse, and above all: exceptional. From trendy cafés housed in historic buildings to lazy lunches with your toes in the sand, here are the top spots in Oranjestad you won’t want to miss:

Que Pasa Restaurant

Que Pasa is located in a beautiful, historic mansion on Wilhelminastraat. Here, you can take a seat in a cozy setting and enjoy international cuisine with an Aruban twist. They also offer a varied three-course menu and share their sushi specials with you. And the sushi, it’s incredibly fresh and delicious!

Tip: Que Pasa is also a well-known wine bar in Oranjestad, so be sure to ask for the wine list if you're interested.

Aruba Experience Café

If you ask us, the morning is the absolute best time to explore Oranjestad. The temperatures are still pleasant, and with great spots like Aruba Experience Café, you have the perfect excuse to take a break. The café exudes that laid-back island vibe that makes you want to stick around all day. Inside, the decor feels charming and intimate, as does the colorful patio in the back. Make sure to try their refreshing Coconut Lemonade, though honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on their breakfast and lunch menu!

The West Deck

Located on the coast near Governor’s Bay Beach, you’ll find The West Deck. It’s a charming wooden beach bar where you can relax on the covered patio. We think it’s a wonderful spot to settle in for lunch. As you gaze out over the sea, you can enjoy ice-cold juices and a generously filled crispy chicken sandwich or fish burger. It’s also a great place to dine out in the evening, for example, while watching the sunset.

Where to stay in Oranjestad?

To experience the best of Oranjestad and the island, we think a centrally located place to stay is the perfect choice. Our favorite place to stay in the capital is the iconic Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort. This stylish resort is located right in the heart of Oranjestad, so you can step right out of the lobby and find yourself among the colorful colonial buildings, charming boutiques, and top-rated restaurants.

If you’re worried that the resort might be too crowded, we can assure you that the Renaissance has a very cozy and inviting feel. The many palm trees on the resort naturally separate the pools from the beach. And what we’re really excited about is that you can hop right on a boat from the resort to the exclusive Renaissance Private Island. There, you’ll enjoy white-sand beaches and ultimate tranquility.

Good to know: At the Renaissance, you can book a stay in the Adults-Only section, which has its own pool, or in the Ocean Suites section, where you have direct access to the beach.

Are you curious about our experience at the Renaissance? Read about it here Why the Renaissance Aruba Resort Belongs on Your Aruba Bucket List!
