Cannes is my favourite destination on the French Riviera. I’ve been coming back almost every year for over 15 years, and each time I discover something new. Of course, Cannes is known for its glamour and the film festival, but don’t let that put you off: it’s also a surprisingly relaxed and accessible place for a sunny holiday or a short city break. In this article, I’m sharing my personal favourites, my go-to restaurants, the loveliest beach clubs, and the best day trips from the city.
Tips for Cannes: my personal favorites
The French coastal city of Cannes is compact and easy to navigate, which makes it a great place for a holiday. There’s plenty to see and do, though you don’t have to pack your days if you don’t want to. In summer, life here revolves around the beach and long evenings on terrace cafés, but Cannes is just as lovely outside peak season: strolling along the promenade, getting lost in the old streets, and taking a break for a good lunch in between. Below, I’m sharing my favourite Cannes tips: from spots you can easily walk to, to day trips that add a little extra variety to your stay.
The best places to stay in Cannes
Looking for a hotel in Cannes that’s stylish, relaxed, and within walking distance of all the best spots? These two addresses are a great choice. One of the things I love about Cannes is how walkable it is, so staying somewhere central makes your trip that much easier (and more enjoyable).
Hôtel & Spa Belle Plage is a wonderful choice if you like a modern look and a quiet atmosphere. The hotel has a nice location towards the old town and the harbor, and a spa where you can unwind after a beach day or long evening in the city.
Hôtel de Provence is just a bit smaller and more personal. A charming hotel with a warm atmosphere located in a cozy neighborhood.
Where to eat in Cannes: the best restaurants
After all these years, I’ve put together a list of my favorite places to eat in Cannes. From traditional French bistros to international cuisines, here are my recommendations:
1. Le Marais: authentic French dining in a charming little street
Located in a narrow, steep street in the heart of Cannes, Le Marais offers a traditional French dining experience. Think escargots, soupe de poisson, and rognons. The street itself is lined with cozy restaurants, but Le Marais remains my favorite for authentic French cuisine.
2. La Paillote de Gaston Gastounette: overlooking the harbor
Located on the boulevard with a view of the harbor, this atmospheric spot is a must-visit. My all-time favorite: les grandes ravioles à la crème de truffe et asperges, a dish that has been on the menu for years and never disappoints.
3. New York New York: vibrant and diverse
Want a change from traditional French cuisine? In the heart of Cannes, New York New York offers a diverse menu of delicious cocktails, fresh salads, juicy burgers, and more. With its large terrace and lively atmosphere, it’s a spot you definitely shouldn’t miss.
4. Le Caveau 30: best hotspot for seafood lovers
Right in the heart of the city, Le Caveau is a charming French bistro serving some of the tastiest seafood and classic French dishes, all perfectly paired with excellent wines.
5. Su and Shi: Asian cuisine along the sea
For the best sushi and other Asian dishes, Su and Shi is the place to go. Located on the boulevard, you can enjoy delicious food with a view of the sea
6. La Pizza Cresci: hotspot for the best pizzas in Cannes
On the edge of the charming small harbor, La Pizza Cresci is a lively and much-loved spot, famous for its delicious pizzas and buzzing atmosphere. Reservations are recommended, as it’s a popular place to dine!
The best beach clubs in Cannes
Cannes is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and stylish beach clubs, where you can easily spend an entire day soaking up the sun, enjoying long seaside lunches, and sipping rosé with your feet in the sand. From laid-back spots to more glamorous addresses, these are my personal favorites:
1. Waikiki Plage: my to-go spot
After Blue Beach was lost to a storm, we quickly became regulars at Waikiki Plage. With its friendly service, comfortable sunbeds, and delicious lunches, it has become our absolute favorite spot for a relaxed beach day in Cannes.
2. O’Key Beach: relaxing on the pier
Located on the same stretch of boulevard as Waikiki, O’Key Beach offers something unique: a pier with sunbeds on the water. Perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.
Tip to do in Cannes: visit Saint Honorat
Saint Honorat is the smaller of the two Lérins Islands and a wonderful spot for nature and peace lovers. A small island located in the bay of Cannes, surrounded by clear blue waters. Monks have cared for the island for centuries, which makes it even more special. About 30 monks live in the Abbey of Lérins, which has been established on the island since the 5th century.
Tickets for the boat to Saint-Honorat are easy to purchase at the Cannes harbor. You’ll reach the island in just 20 minutes. On the first Friday of every month, you can join a guided tour and wine tasting on the island. Tours are offered in French and English. The tasting is advertised as lasting 15 minutes, but it usually takes around 45 minutes. In the sun, among the vineyards, you can enjoy two delicious wines while listening to the stories behind the wines produced here. It’s truly a very special experience.
There is also a good restaurant where you can enjoy lunch with views over the clear blue sea. Be sure to book in advance, as availability is limited. Note: the boat returns to the Cannes harbor once every hour.
Fun day trips from Cannes
Cannes is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. These day trips come highly recommended:
Nice: a vibrant city full of charm. It’s just a quick train ride from Cannes. My personal top tip is to visit the rooftop bar Farago on the Roof, which offers stunning views from the top.
Monaco: a city full of luxury and history. It’s also easily accessible by train.
Saint-Tropez: you can take a boat trip from Cannes to Saint-Tropez, which takes just over an hour. If you visit on a Tuesday or Saturday, be sure to check out the Provençal market at Place des Lices for local products and a wonderful Mediterranean atmosphere.
Théoule-sur-Mer: a charming town in the bay of Cannes. You can enjoy drinks at Marco Polo and Les Frères de la Bale.
Antibes en Juan-les-Pins: both are charming coastal towns easily accessible by train from Cannes. You can wander through the quaint streets, relax on the beach, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.
Mougins: although this village is less accessible by public transport, it is definitely worth a visit. This picturesque hilltop village is known for its art galleries and excellent restaurants.
Vacationing by plane
For your trip to Cannes, it’s useful to know that flying into Nice Airport is the best option. Check out the best flight deals to Nice.
From the airport you can take a direct bus into Cannes that departs regularly. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the city. Tickets can be easily purchased at the terminal exit.
A rental car in Cannes
Once you arrive in Cannes, you won't need a car: almost everything in town is within walking distance. The train station is centrally located, so you can also easily make day trips to surrounding cities such as Nice, Monaco or Antibes. Want to go to Mougins? Then a rental car in Cannes is recommend. We personally always rent our car through Sunny Cars because of their all-inclusive package. It means you’re properly insured and you know exactly what you’re covered for. So you can travel with peace of mind.
The best travel time for Cannes
The best time to visit Cannes is in spring or autumn. The weather is still lovely, but you can avoid the crowds and heat of the summer months. Of course, summer is also beautiful, especially if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, beach days, and long, warm evenings.
Is Cannes the right place for you?
Cannes is so much more than just a city for the jet set. It’s a place to relax, enjoy good food, and explore the surrounding area. I hope my personal tips inspire you to discover this wonderful destination for yourself!
