Cap Blanc-Nez is without a doubt one of the most impressive spots on the Opal Coast. Here, you walk along towering white chalk cliffs, gaze out over a wild stretch of sea, and on a clear day you can even spot the famous cliffs of Dover on the English coast. Together with Cap Gris-Nez, it forms Les Deux Caps, two dramatic headlands in northern France that are perfect to visit during a coastal road trip. Whether you’re stopping by for a short walk with panoramic views or planning a longer hike along the cliffs, Cap Blanc-Nez is a place that truly makes you slow down. In this guide, you’ll find the most beautiful hiking routes, practical tips for your visit, and inspiration to turn your stop into a full weekend on the Opal Coast.
Why is Cap Blanc-Nez so special?
The Opal Coast is known for its dramatic chalk cliffs, but Cap Blanc-Nez is arguably the most iconic of them all. The bright white cliffs, around 90 million years old, were once formed underwater and slowly pushed upward over millions of years. What makes this place extra special is that you can literally walk through history. Fossils regularly wash up on the beach below the cliffs, and it’s not uncommon to see visitors carefully scanning the sand for prehistoric finds. Add the sweeping sea views and the feeling of standing at the edge of the continent, and you’ll understand why this cape leaves such a strong impression.
Practical information about Cap Blanc-Nez
Cap Blanc-Nez is located on the Opal Coast in the Pas-de-Calais region, near the village of Escalles.
You can easily spend 1.5 to 3 hours exploring Cap Blanc-Nez. Combine your visit with nearby Cap Gris-Nez, and you have the perfect plan for a full day on the coast. Together, the two headlands stretch for around 23 kilometres, rising to an average height of about 100 metres above sea level, which means panoramic views are guaranteed.
Both capes are located in a nature reserve: the Grand Site des Deux Caps. The landscape along the coast consists of picturesque seaside resorts and is surrounded by beautiful expanses of rolling countryside.
Through the village of Escalles you easily reach the parking lot, from here it is a 200 meters walk to the start of the trail.
On the coast it can be quite windy, so bring a windproof jacket. Even on sunny days!
Hiking at Cap Blanc-Nez
You can enjoy some fantastic hikes at Cap Blanc-Nez and the best part is, you can make it as challenging (or as easy) as you like. We’re sharing three hiking route ideas below, so you can choose the one that suits you best:
Mainly here for the views? Park near Escalles and follow the paths from the car park up onto the cliffs. Within minutes, you’ll reach viewpoints where the coastline curves away beautifully.
A great hiking route starts in Sangatte. In about two hours, you’ll walk through an increasingly rugged landscape as you make your way up to the top of Cap Blanc-Nez. The higher you climb, the more impressive the views become. Along the way, you’ll also come across traces of World War II, such as bunkers and bomb craters.
Fancy a more active day? You can combine Cap Blanc-Nez with a hike towards Wissant and, if you like, continue on to Cap Gris-Nez. Take your time for this one and make sure you wear proper hiking shoes.
Cap Gris-Nez: one of the capes of Les Deux Caps
Cap Gris-Nez lies about 33 kilometres from the English coast, making it the closest point in mainland Europe to Britain. Standing at the viewpoint, with England just across the water, feels surprisingly special — especially on a clear day. As the name suggests, the cliffs here are grey in colour. They consist mainly of sandstone and clay and are estimated to be around 160 million years old.
From the (free) car park, it’s about a 200-metre walk to the viewpoint. Be sure to take a moment here to soak in the scenery. On a clear day, you can easily spot the cliffs of Dover. We were lucky and had a great view of England — such an impressive sight.
Tip: Sail with the DFDS from Dunkirk to Dover for a beautiful road trip along the south coast of England!
Hiking at Cap Gris-Nez
The area around Cap Gris-Nez is fantastic for a walk in nature. Many visitors drive to the car park, stop at the viewpoint, and then continue their journey along the Opal Coast. But if you enjoy being active, it’s well worth taking a bit more time to explore on foot. From the viewpoint, you can follow the coastal trail GR 120 du Littoral towards the seaside town of Wissant or in the direction of Audresselles. You’ll walk along the top of the cliffs, through small valleys, and enjoy wide, panoramic views along the way. Another great option is La Boucle du Cap, a short loop of about 3 kilometres around Cap Gris-Nez.
The history of Les Deux Caps
Les Deux Caps and the surrounding coastline were heavily affected during World War II. Its proximity to England made the area strategically important. On walks, for example from Audresselles to Cap Gris-Nez, you’ll come across several bunkers, silent reminders of the past.
If you want to dive deeper into the area’s history, visit Batterie Todt. This museum features a collection of uniforms, weapons, propaganda posters, and a large German gun. The bunker itself is one of the largest bunkers built by the German army.
Accommodation on the Opal Coast in France
Plan at least a weekend for this part of France to fully enjoy the two capes at a relaxed pace. Staying overnight gives you the freedom to hike, cycle, and explore without rushing. In the area, you’ll find everything from cosy B&Bs to charming seaside hotels, it’s definitely worth spending a night here. Our top recommendations are:
Les Lodges in Le Touquet: a lovely place if you like to stay close to the beach
B&B La Ferme Du Dizacre In Leubringhen: quiet and rural, close to Les Deux Caps
Take a road trip along the Opal Coast
Along the Opal Coast, you’ll quickly slip into holiday mode. The landscape feels worlds apart, yet it’s surprisingly easy to reach from the Netherlands. The best part? You can set your own pace: spend a few hours at Les Deux Caps for fresh sea air, or turn it into a full weekend (or longer) with multiple stops along the coast.
What makes this coast so enjoyable is the variety. One day you walk over chalk cliffs overlooking the sea, the next day you stroll through a seaside resort, enjoy a plate full of mussels on a terrace and finish with a sunset on the beach. Les Deux Caps are a great sight on your route along the Opal Coast, which you can also combine with a stopover in Calais and a stay in Wissant.
