You’re standing at 2,600 metres on the summit of Mont Valaisan. The sun glistens on the fresh powder snow, while in the distance the iconic Mont Blanc rises above the clouds. For a moment, you hesitate: will it be a creamy French tartiflette on a sunny terrace, or skiing across the border for authentic Italian pasta in La Thuile? That’s exactly what a winter holiday in the French ski resort of La Rosière feels like.
La Rosière: the sunny, snowy secret of the French Alps
Looking for a versatile ski resort in France where experience comes first? Then La Rosière is exactly what you’re looking for. This charming village in the Tarentaise Valley sits at a snow-sure altitude of 1,850 metres and is known for its unique south-facing position. Thanks to this, you can enjoy long sunny days on the slopes, with wide, open runs that are perfect for both beginners and more advanced skiers.
La Rosière is part of the vast Espace San Bernardo, a unique cross-border ski area linking France with Italy (La Thuile). It’s the only ski resort in the Northern Alps where you can combine French alpine charm with the Italian la dolce vita lifestyle, all in one ski trip.
During my visit, I quickly realised there’s so much more to this winter paradise than just skiing. From scenic snowshoe hikes and winter walks between the villages to unwinding in a spa after a day in the cold, La Rosière has it all. In this guide, I’ll share my personal tips for the best things to do, where to eat, and practical advice for planning your winter holiday in La Rosière.
Skiing in La Rosière: sunny and versatile ski resort in France
La Rosière is an ideal ski resort if you’re looking for sunny slopes and a wide variety of runs. With 156 kilometres of pistes (over 80% of which are above 1,850 metres) it offers plenty of choice and challenge for both beginners and more advanced skiers.
Espace San Bernardo ski area (France and Italy)
What makes La Rosière even more special is its direct connection to La Thuile via the Espace San Bernardo. This unique setup allows you to ski from France to Italy in a single day, experiencing two countries in one trip. The ski area features wide blue and red pistes, challenging black runs, and breathtaking views over the Haute Tarentaise Valley.

Tip: To ski into Italy, you’ll need to be an advanced skier, as the runs crossing the border are mostly black pistes. Beginners can still have a great time on the French side, where the wider, quieter slopes are great for building confidence and practising your technique in La Rosière.
Who is La Rosière suitable for?
La Rosière is perfect for both beginners and advanced skiers. If you’re a beginner, the wide, gentle slopes are ideal for practising your skills, and local ski schools offer excellent lessons. I’m a beginner myself, and the sessions at the Oxygene Ski & Snowboard School really helped me improve my technique. Advanced skiers, on the other hand, will find plenty of challenges on the steeper runs and varied pistes of the Espace San Bernardo, with breathtaking scenery along the way.
La Rosière is also great for families: quiet slopes and child-friendly facilities make it a wonderful destination for an active family vacation.
Why La Rosière is such a sunny ski resort
One of the biggest advantages of La Rosière is undoubtedly its south-facing location. Unlike many other ski resorts in the French Alps, which are often shaded, here you enjoy many hours of sunshine during the day.
It’s this combination of sunshine and reliable snow that makes La Rosière such a fantastic destination for a winter sports holiday. The village sits at 1,850 metres, while the slopes climb to nearly 2,800 metres, ensuring excellent snow conditions while you soak up the sun. I think this is one of the highlights of skiing here. Even off the slopes, the sunny location is a real bonus. Enjoying lunch on a terrace with the sun on your face is just that much better.
Snowshoeing in La Rosière
Although La Rosière is primarily known as a ski resort, I quickly realised there’s so much more to do than just hit the slopes. One of my favourite ways to experience the mountains is on a snowshoe hike, with stunning views over the Tarentaise Valley. As you slowly make your way through the deep powder, the sound of ski lifts fades away, replaced by the rhythmic crunch of snow underfoot. It’s an amazing way to slow down and fully appreciate the raw beauty of the French Alps.
Routes and possibilities (with and without a guide)
Snowshoeing opportunities in La Rosière are abundant and varied. Scattered throughout the village, you’ll find several marked winter walks and snowshoeing routes. Options range from short, leisurely strolls through the forest to longer, more challenging trails that reward you with panoramic views over the valley.
Some great options:
Bout de la Route: an accessible hike of about an hour from Les Eucherts, with views of the valley and Mont Pourri.
Panoramic Mont-Blanc trail (Roc Noir): a longer trek (about 3 hours round trip) for those seeking a bit more challenge, with views of Mont Blanc, Italy and the Tarentaise Valley.
Tip: With a special pedestrian and snowshoe pass, you can also use several lifts, making it easier to reach higher elevations and enjoy even more stunning mountain views. In 2026, a 6-day pass costs €40.50 and offers unlimited access to multiple lifts in the area.
More winter activities in La Rosière
Put on your snow boots for a winter walk between the village and the Les Eucherts district, unwind in the wellness area after a day outdoors, and enjoy the culinary delights of La Rosière. On the La Rosière website you can discover all activities, but here are a few tips I’d like to share with you:
Chemin de la Forêt: winter forest walk between La Rosière and Les Eucherts
Looking to escape the hustle and bustle without going too far? The Chemin de la Forêt is a delightful winter walk to try. This short, 1-kilometre trail connects the centre of La Rosière with Les Eucherts. You can easily do it on foot, so no snowshoes or skis required. The path winds through a peaceful forest and is well maintained and lit in the evenings, adding a magical, atmospheric touch.
What I loved about this walk is how suddenly peaceful it becomes among the trees. With a bit of luck, you might catch glimpses of the snow-covered peaks of Mont Pourri rising between the pines!
Wellness and spa in La Rosière
After an active day on the slopes, nothing beats relaxing in a spa. In La Rosière, you’ll find several wellness centres and hotels where tranquility, nature, and comfort come together.
Popular spas in the village include the wellness centre at I.L.Y Hotels, the extensive spa at Hôtel Alparena, and Résidence Le Tyrol. Here, you can enjoy massages, facials, and full spa experiences in stylish Alpine settings. At the hotel where I stayed in La Rosière, Odalys L’Ecrin Blanc, you’ll also find a lovely swimming pool, sauna, and hammam.
Ice skating in La Rosière
In Les Eucherts, you’ll find a charming ice rink where you can glide, laugh, and enjoy a bit of friendly competition with friends or family. The rink measures 360 m², giving plenty of space to practice or simply skate laps. Open sessions and introductory lessons are available. Every Tuesday there are basic skating lessons, and on Thursdays you can try ice hockey. Both activities are suitable for all ages and offer a fun, active experience.
Restaurants and food in La Rosière
After a day out in the snow, everything tastes even better. In La Rosière, you’ll find cozy restaurants and mountain huts serving traditional French Alpine dishes, as well as a hint of Italian cuisine.
Typical French mountain dishes
The most delicious local specialties? Definitely raclette and cheese fondue. Warm, creamy, and simply the best way to warm up cold fingers after a day in the snow. You’ll almost literally melt into the combination of melted cheese, crusty bread, potatoes, and pickles. Tartiflette, fresh cheese boards, and local charcuterie are also highly recommended.
But it’s not just French Alpine classics you’ll find here! La Rosière is close to Italy, so you can also enjoy wood-fired pizzas, fresh pasta, and other Italian favorites.
The best restaurants and tips
These are the best restaurants in La Rosière:
Restaurant L'Ancolie: the best spot for authentic Savoyard specialties in a cozy, welcoming setting. Here, you can enjoy fondue made from their own cheese, freshly grated every morning. The raclettes are also highly recommended. They also serve tartiflette, warm gratins, and delicious pierres chaudes with homemade sauces.
Le Flocon: at Le Flocon, you can enjoy wood-fired pizzas, fresh pasta, burgers, and French dishes. All while enjoying a view of the ice rink!
Rosa Ristorante: delicious pizza, fresh pasta and Italian classics made from local produce. With direct ski-in/ski-out access, you'll literally be sitting in the sun on the terrace.
Ledemé Bakery & Patisserie: croissants, pain au chocolat, Beaufort bread and blueberry tarts. Everything here is homemade and artisanal. Delicious for breakfast before hitting the slopes or as a sweet snack in between.
Brasserie Solario (Hôtel Alparena & Spa): you can reach Brasserie Solario both on skis and on foot, which is perfect when you’re spending the day on the slopes. Brasserie Solario has a sunny terrace with views of Mont Pourri. Here, you can enjoy French specialties, mountain burgers, pizzas, vegetarian dishes, and delicious desserts.
The best places to stay in La Rosière
In La Rosière you'll find a nice mix of chalet-style apartments, luxury hotels and small-scale accommodations. Many lodgings are scattered around the village (La Rosière Village) and in Les Eucherts, often with views of the snow-capped mountains.
Ski-in ski-out accommodations in La Rosière
One of the biggest advantages of La Rosière is that many accommodations are located right on the slopes. This means you can strap on your skis in the morning and head straight to the lift, then ski back to your accommodation at the end of the day. Ideal if you want to avoid the hassle of ski buses or walking in your ski boots.
Especially in Les Eucherts, you’ll find many modern apartments and residences with this ski-in ski-out location, often including extras such as a balcony, ski storage, and sometimes even a pool or spa. A recommended option is Odalys L’Ecrin Blanc.

Hôtel Alparena & Spa: Luxury all the way. This hotel has a 1000 m² wellness center with swimming pool, saunas, hammams, whirlpool and fitness. Extra nice: families have also been thought of, with a separate children's pool.
I.L.Y Hotels La Rosière: Here everything is about relaxing in style. The 420 m² NUXE Spa offers a heated indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, hammam and extensive massages.
