In the middle of the Pyrenees you will find no less than three impressive ski resorts, most of which are above 2,000 meters. This sounds like the ideal place for a nice ski vacation, right? But when it comes to winter sports in Europe, Andorra is not (yet) an obvious destination. Too bad, because this unique travel destination is precisely known for its beautiful winter sports areas and beautiful nature. And the mountains are also snow-assured. So let us convince you why you should go on a ski vacation to Andorra!

Where is Andorra located and how to get there?

Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe and is located in the middle of the impressive Pyrenees Mountains. It borders the countries France and Spain. The capital of Andorra is Andorra la Vella.

The easiest and quickest way to travel to Andorra from the Netherlands is by plane. Andorra itself does not have an airport, but the nearby French city of Toulouse does. KLM offers direct flights from Amsterdam to Toulouse, so this is a good option to consider. The flight is direct and takes 1 hour and 50 minutes. During the winter months, KLM flies to Toulouse several times daily. For the current flight schedule, check out the KLM website.

From Toulouse Airport, you can catch a direct bus transfer to Andorra. This bus transfer takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes and takes you right through the impressive Pyrenees to your travel destination of Andorra. Retrieved from Andorra by Bus find more information on transfer times and ticket prices.

The different ski resorts in Andorra

For a country that is no bigger than 468 km², it is quite special that they are known for their beautiful and, above all, good ski resorts. For a ski vacation to Andorra, there are three ski resorts you can consider. As of this year, these three ski resorts fall under Grandvalira Resorts. In total, this ski resort therefore offers more 300 kilometers of slopes.

In case you're not crazy about winter sports, we can reassure you. Andorra is also the ideal destination for non-winter athletes. In fact, there are plenty of fun winter activities to enjoy in the ski resorts.

1. Vallnord - Pal Arinsal

Close to the capital Andorra de Vella you will find the centrally located and popular ski resort Vallnord - Pal Arinsal. The ski area is located between 1,500 and 2,560 meters and offers 63 kilometers of well-prepared slopes. With 7 green, 18 blue, 17 red and 5 black slopes, 47 slopes in total, you will find slopes for every type of winter sportsman. From beginner to advanced and from young to old. This therefore makes Vallnord - Pal Arinsal a suitable ski resort for families.

For cozy après-ski, winter activities and fine accommodation you have also come to the right place in Vallnord - Pal Arinsal. How about the cool outdoor activity of tobogganing, a trip on an electric snowmobile (also called Moonbike) or do you prefer to go for active and take a walk on snowshoes? After all the snow fun, it is also nice to relax. The perfect place for this can be found 10 minutes from Vallnord - Pal Arinsal. The spa town of Caldea is the place to unwind in one of the hot thermal springs.

The Vallnord - Pal Arinsal ski area consists of the ski resorts Arinsal and Pal. Shuttle buses run between the ski resorts, but during the day you can of course easily ski from one area to the other. Would you like to ski in another ski resort in Andorra? You can. The Ordino Arcalis ski area can be reached by free ski bus and is a 30-minute drive away.

2. Ordino Arcalis

Ordino Arcalis is the smallest ski resort in Andorra, but is very snow-sure due to its northern location in the Pyrenees. There is a total of 30.5 kilometers of groomed runs, including 11 yellow, 9 green, 7 blue and 2 black runs.

Whereas off-piste skiing is never recommended, the off-pistes in the Ordino Arcalis ski resort are internationally acclaimed for their good snow quality. Freeride competitions take place regularly in the winter months. A place for the real adventurer!

3. Grandvalira

The tastiest ski slopes are wide and endless. If you prefer this as a winter sportsman then the ski resort Grandvalira is the place to be. This is because Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees and also in Southern Europe. There are 210 kilometers of slopes and no less than 138 runs where you can show off your skiing or snowboarding skills.

Around the Grandvalira ski area you will find several ski resorts. Encamp is an authentic village with cozy restaurants and cafes, in short a nice place to stay. But Pas de la Casa is also a larger ski resort in Grandvalira. It is the highest ski resort in Andorra and from here you have access to no less than 100 kilometers of slopes.

In such a large ski area, there are also many options of winter activities. One of our favorite is without a doubt "mushing," better known as dog sledding.

  • Andorra Pass - ski pass giving you access to all three ski areas (valid all year)

Combine your ski vacation to Andorra with a city trip to Toulouse

Winter sports go hand in hand with après-ski. After a whole day of sports in the snow, there is nothing better than toasting to a beautiful day. The après-ski bars in the ski resorts of Arinsal, Pas de la Casa and Soldeu are therefore crowded.

But are you up for extra fun and a good night out? Then you should definitely check out the student city of Toulouse. A ski vacation to Andorra is therefore perfect to combine with a city break Toulouse. Especially since KLM flies directly to this cozy French city.
