A stroll along the centuries-old city walls, with the sound of the ocean in the background and colorful colonial buildings all around that transport you back in time. Welcome to Galle! This is a destination you simply can’t miss on your journey through Sri Lanka. Perched on the island’s south coast, this historic town is full of charm: from its UNESCO-listed fort and cozy streets lined with boutiques and cafés, to the iconic lighthouse that everyone loves to photograph. Wandering here feels like stepping into an open-air museum, but one where you can also enjoy great food and shopping. Curious about the best things to do in Galle? Here are my top tips!
What to do in Galle, Sri Lanka? 5 Tips!
Galle is full of surprises: from its impressive city walls to hidden little shops and charming cafés, there’s always something new to discover. Here are 5 of my personal tips and favorite things to do in Galle!
1. Explore the historic Galle Fort
A walk through Galle Fort feels like stepping back in time. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fortified by the Dutch. You can still see their influences everywhere: in the architecture, the street names, and the atmosphere. Since everything is within walking distance, you can easily explore the fort in just a few hours. Along the way, you’ll pass impressive cultural landmarks such as the stately Groote Kerk, the charming All Saints’ Church, and the characterful Old Dutch Hospital, which today houses lively restaurants and shops. On one side of the fort, the Galle Clock Tower greets you, while on the other side the iconic lighthouse overlooks the ocean. Wandering past the ancient city walls, colonial facades, and hidden boutiques, you’ll soak up Galle’s highlights and unique charm in just one morning or afternoon.
2. Walk along the city walls to Galle Lighthouse
Galle Lighthouse is the city’s landmark and perhaps the most photographed spot in the entire fort. This elegant white lighthouse rises above the palm trees and looks out over the Indian Ocean. Especially around golden hour, when the soft light turns the tower a glowing shade of gold, the atmosphere feels truly magical. As you enter Galle Fort, take a leisurely walk along the city walls towards the lighthouse, pause to soak up the views, and watch local fishermen at work along the coastline. This is my favorite time to be in Galle Fort!
3. Wander through the streets of Galle Fort
The best thing about Galle? Simply getting lost in the narrow streets of the fort. Here you’ll find plenty of cozy boutiques, art galleries, and trendy cafés, all tucked between beautiful colonial buildings. Every corner holds a surprise, from colorful street art to small shops where you can pick up unique souvenirs. The top spot for souvenir shopping? That’s Pedlar Street. Take your time exploring, and don’t forget to wander down the side streets as well.
One thing I noticed is that the famous Stick No Bills posters are everywhere in the shops. They’re super fun for decorating your home, but be prepared: they come with a price tag!
4. Create your own jewelry in Galle
There are plenty of jewelers in Galle where you can buy a beautiful piece of jewelry. You’ll undoubtedly be able to strike a great deal, but I still want to share this tip with you:
Skip the jewelry shops and create your own unique piece instead. Galle is the place in Sri Lanka to do this. At a local silversmith, you’ll learn how to tell real gemstones from fake ones (always useful!) and then choose your favorite. Together with the silversmith, you’ll craft a silver ring. A special souvenir to remember your journey through Sri Lanka!

5. Enjoy drinks and food at these hotspots in Galle
Inside Galle’s historic fort, you’ll find plenty of restaurants. But which ones are worth visiting? Even though we only spent one day in the city, we managed to discover two absolute hotspot favorites.Â
For a tasty lunch, Aqua Forno is a great spot. Here, you can enjoy fresh salads and freshly baked, generously topped sandwiches. The juices and smoothies are also highly recommended.
In the evening, you have to dine at The Pasty Factory. As soon as you step inside, you’re warmly welcomed and the aromas of the Italian cuisine immediately greet you. All dishes are freshly prepared in the open kitchen, how fun is that! And I can tell you, the pasta dishes are absolutely finger-licking good.Â
Best places to stay in Galle
To fully experience the charm of Galle, staying within the walls of the historic fort is highly recommended. Inside, you’ll find colonial buildings that house cozy and stylish boutique hotels. Many of these hotels feature beautiful courtyards and have a very relaxed atmosphere. A great option is Taru Villas Rampart Street, a boutique hotel with stunning rooms surrounding a swimming pool. For a more budget-friendly stay within the fort, we recommend No 05 Middle Street. This is a slightly more modern option with nice rooms and good facilities, though it does not have a pool. Of course, staying outside Galle Fort is also an option, often at slightly lower prices.
Tip: Personally, I really liked that we had a pool at our accommodation, so I would definitely choose this if I were to book a stay in Galle again.
