What to do in Sigiriya, the green heart of Sri Lanka? This stunning destination offers much more than you might expect: breathtaking sights, scenic routes through lush rice fields, and unforgettable sunrises and sunsets from iconic rock formations. Whether you want to climb the famous Lion Rock or admire it from nearby Pidurangala, Sigiriya is full of must-see sights and activities. Exploring the area by tuktuk, we discovered charming hotspots for eating and relaxing, as well as spectacular viewpoints. We even found the best smoothie bowl of our entire Sri Lanka trip here! In this article, we share our top tips for Sigiriya, including the best sights, activities, and hidden gems you definitely shouldn’t miss on your round trip through Sri Lanka.
Why Sigiriya should definitely be on your Sri Lanka itinerary
In our opinion, Sigiriya is an absolute must on your Sri Lanka road trip. Not just for the world-famous Lion Rock, but for the unique combination of nature, culture, and tranquility. It’s a destination that truly leaves an impression. What we loved about Sigiriya is that you can explore it at your own pace—no crowded city, no rush. You can hop around by tuktuk, enjoy lunch with a view of the rock, climb to the top of Pidurangala Rock, or simply stop along the way because the scenery is too beautiful to pass by. For us, it felt like one of the most relaxing and awe-inspiring spots on our Sri Lanka journey.
What to do in Sigiriya? These are our top 7 tips!
Sigiriya may be small, but there’s plenty to explore in and around the village. From stunning viewpoints to great spots for breakfast or dinner, you’ll never be bored here. Here are our favorite things to do in Sigiriya:
1. Climb Pidurangala Rock at sunrise
One of the most rewarding activities in Sigiriya is climbing Pidurangala Rock. The ascent is manageable, though the final section involves some scrambling. The main reason to climb Pidurangala is for the incredible view of Lion Rock. Unlike the busier Lion Rock climb with its ruins, here you’ll find tranquility, nature, and one of the most breathtaking panoramas in all of Sri Lanka.
The climb takes around 30 to 40 minutes. The first section follows steps and paths past a small temple (make sure to cover your shoulders and knees at the start). After that, it gets a bit more adventurous, requiring you to scramble over large rocks. That final stretch is what makes the climb so exciting, and the view from the top is truly rewarding.
The best time to climb Pidurangala Rock is at sunrise. When you reach the top and catch your breath, the sky gradually lights up in shades of orange over Lion Rock and the surrounding jungle, a truly magical moment. You can also start just before sunset, but be sure to time it right, as the light changes quickly and the area can get quite crowded around golden hour (the hour before sunset).
Tip: Are you driving your own tuk-tuk through Sri Lanka? Then you can easily drive yourself to the entrance of Pidurangala Rock. No tour, guide, or transfer needed. Just make sure you’re comfortable driving in the dark if you plan to start early in the morning.
2. Have breakfast at Soul Food
After your climb to the top of Pidurangala, hop into your tuktuk and head straight to Soul Food, our favorite spot in Sigiriya. Relax under the shade of trees at a wooden table in the charming garden, and enjoy a delicious breakfast with views of Lion Rock. The vibe is calm and welcoming, with lush greenery all around and soft music setting the perfect mood.
Soul Food is famous for its delicious smoothie bowls, fresh juices, and excellent coffee. Everything is vibrant, fresh, and crafted with care. The menu is entirely vegetarian, and the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you’ll find a variety of healthy bowls, flavorful curries, fresh wraps, and other tasty vegetarian dishes, making it the perfect spot to recharge during your Sigiriya visit.
3. Climb the iconic Lion Rock
If you’re in Sigiriya, visiting Lion Rock is an absolute must. This towering rock formation rises over 200 meters above the lush landscape and is the iconic symbol of the area. It’s no surprise that this remarkable site is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the summit once stood the palace of King Kassapa, who, according to legend, not only ruled here but also hosted lavish parties complete with pools and women. You can still feel the history come alive in the beautiful murals displayed halfway up the climb.
A visit to Lion Rock takes you through ancient gardens and water features, leading to the famous lion’s paws carved at the base of the rock. From there, the climb begins, about 1,200 steps to the summit. The path is well maintained and generally safe, but it can be challenging for those with a fear of heights. Along the way, a guide can share fascinating stories about the history and significance of this extraordinary site.
At the top, you’ll find the ruins of the ancient palace, an old swimming pool, and breathtaking views all around. However, we chose not to climb Lion Rock ourselves, as we preferred to admire the rock from below rather than stand among the ruins at the summit. Another factor was the entrance fee, which is quite steep, and the crowds, especially during peak season.
4. Discover the most beautiful viewpoints with your own tuktuk
One of the best decisions we made during our Sri Lanka trip was renting our own tuktuk. Especially in Sigiriya, this gave us incredible freedom. We could explore wherever we wanted, without relying on taxis or organized tours. It allowed us to venture out on our own, loosen the grip on the map, and simply drive around in search of beautiful spots.
We drove along winding roads, sometimes smooth and paved, other times bumpy and full of potholes, making us wonder at times if the tuktuk could handle it. But those adventurous paths led us to hidden gems we would never have discovered otherwise: vast rice fields, grazing buffalo, local homes, and friendly people waving as we passed by in our tuktuk.
The most beautiful surprise? A secluded viewpoint with panoramic views of both Lion Rock and Pidurangala Rock. No tourists, no fences. Just nature in all its glory and an incredible, uninterrupted view.
5. Drinking coffee at Cappuccino
Cappuccino is one of those spots you stumble upon and instantly think, “This is exactly where I want to relax.” The café feels like a cozy treehouse nestled among the trees. The best part? The three curious squirrels that often drop by, not because they’re fond of you, but because they’re hoping to snag a piece of banana. You can come here any time for breakfast or lunch, but we mainly stopped by for a refreshing iced latte, and it did not disappoint!
6. Have a surprisingly delicious dinner at Tapas Restaurant
After 1 - 2 weeks of traveling through Sri Lanka, you might crave something different from the usual rice and curry. That’s when Tapas in Sigiriya becomes a great dinner option. The menu features Spanish-style tapas with a unique Sri Lankan twist. You might be curious what that means. Think spicy vegetable dishes, crunchy bites, and flavorful dips that offer a fresh take on familiar flavors. But honestly, the best way to understand is to try them yourself. At Tapas, you’ll enjoy your meal in a cozy outdoor garden, beautifully lit with atmospheric lighting, making for a relaxed and memorable evening.
7. Visit the impressive Golden Temple in Dambulla
About a 30-minute drive from Sigiriya, you will find one of Sri Lanka's most impressive temples: the Golden Temple of Dambulla. This place is best known for the five rock temples carved into a huge granite rock, also known as Rock Temple. Inside you will find more than 150 Buddha statues, colorful murals and ancient details that are still well preserved.
Outside, at the base of the temple, you will find the large golden Buddha statue that you can see looming from afar. From there the climb up starts (about 10 to 15 minutes, with quite a few steps). Along the way you will have beautiful views of the surroundings, and with a little luck you will spot cheeky monkeys along the path here as well.
We visited the temple as a stopover on our way from Sigiriya to Kandy, but you can also easily make it a day trip from Sigiriya. If you’re continuing by tuktuk to Kandy, be prepared for a scenic 2.5-hour drive through Sri Lanka’s stunning mountain landscapes before reaching the city, a truly beautiful journey!
Our favorite hotels in Sigiriya
A comfortable hotel is definitely not a luxury you can skip, especially with the heat it’s great to have a relaxing place to unwind. We stayed at Palmyra Nature Resort Sigiriya, a small-scale accommodation just outside the center. The location is top: you are in the middle of the greenery and can drive straight to Pidurangala or the village. The pool is lovely, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the atmosphere is relaxed. The service is basic, but fine if you are mainly looking for a quiet place in the middle of greenery. Don't expect too much fuss or personal attention, but the location makes up for a lot.
Would you prefer a little more hospitality and just that little extra service? Then Into The Wild Sigiriya and Sigiriya Cottage are great alternatives to consider. We’ve heard many positive stories about these accommodations, and they’re beautifully located as well.
Tip: We recommend staying at least two nights in Sigiriya. That way, you’ll have enough time to climb both Lion Rock and Pidurangala Rock, check out some great hotspots, and explore the surroundings by tuktuk at a relaxed pace.
