The ultimate 3-week itinerary for Sri Lanka

During our Sri Lanka trip, we followed a three-week route that truly gave us the feeling of getting to know the country. From the rugged inland landscapes to the tropical southern coast, every destination offered something new. We designed the journey at a relaxed pace, with plenty of time to enjoy and explore, without having to pack your bags every single day.

On the map below, you can see our complete route through Sri Lanka. We’ve written separate articles for every destination, packed with practical tips, personal experiences, and our favorite hotels to stay at. Be sure to click through each destination for even more inspiration!

How many weeks do you need for this Sri Lanka itinerary?

For this Sri Lanka round trip, we recommend setting aside at least three weeks. This gives you enough time to explore the different sides of the island, from cultural highlights inland to relaxing days on the coast, without feeling rushed. Have less time? You can shorten the itinerary by skipping one or two destinations. In this article, we also share handy tips on how to do that.

1. Negombo

After arriving at Colombo Airport, it’s nice to start your Sri Lanka trip at a relaxed pace. That’s why we chose to head straight to Negombo, a coastal town just a 20-minute drive from the airport. Negombo has a very laid-back vibe, wide beaches, and plenty of charming shops and restaurants to explore.

Negombo may not be the most beautiful place in Sri Lanka, but it’s a pleasant spot to overcome your jetlag and get used to the warm temperatures. If you’re eager to start exploring the local culture right away, there are several great places to visit in Negombo. For us, two nights was more than enough to recharge and start the upcoming adventure feeling fresh.

Tip: book accommodation with a swimming pool, as the sea can sometimes be rough, and it’s always nice to have a spot to cool off in the warm weather. We stayed at Serendib Village Guest House, a very comfortable place with spacious rooms and a cozy terrace by the river. From the accommodation, you can easily walk to various restaurants and the beach.

2. Wilpattu National Park

Our first real encounter with wilderness and nature took us to Wilpattu National Park! This is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and, in our opinion, one of the most impressive. Wilpattu is much quieter than, for example, Yala, and is known for its mysterious lakes and vast landscapes. There are many reasons travelers visit Wilpattu. Besides being less crowded, it also offers the highest chances of spotting leopards. You can also see sloth bears and a wide variety of bird species. The area around the park is perfect to explore on a jeep safari. We set out early for a full-day safari and spotted leopards, elephants, crocodiles, deer, buffaloes, and numerous bird species. Wilpattu National Park truly feels like untouched wilderness, making the experience even more special.

Looking for leopards and elephants in a quieter setting than Yala? Then read all about our safari in Wilpattu: how to get there, what you can see, and the best places to stay.

3. Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is one of the oldest cities in the world and was once the first capital of Sri Lanka. What immediately catches your eye here? The many ruins, impressive stupas, and the serene atmosphere that surrounds the city. Anuradhapura is often described as the most spiritual place in the country. The city is a major archaeological destination, divided into the new city and the old city. In the new city, you’ll find restored stupas, recognizable by their whitewashed appearance. The old city features ruins and stupas in their original state. To enter this area, you are required to purchase a ticket for around $30, and you may be asked to show it at various points.

Set out in your tuk-tuk or rent a bike and explore the various ruins and stupas at your own pace. Be sure to stop at the Sri Maha Bodhi, the sacred tree under which Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, a remarkable place where pilgrims come to pray every day. If you want to learn more about the ancient history, it’s definitely recommended to explore Anuradhapura with a guide. Going independently? 4. Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of the most iconic destinations in Sri Lanka, thanks to the mighty Lion Rock that rises 200 meters into the sky. At the top of this rock formation, you’ll find the ruins of an ancient palace with frescoes and water gardens, along with breathtaking views over Sigiriya and the surrounding area. It can get quite touristy and busy, but it’s still an absolute must-see.

Are you an early riser? Then climb Pidurangala Rock at sunrise. This rock sits opposite Lion Rock and undoubtedly offers the best view of the famous landmark. It might be a bit tough setting your alarm for 4:00 AM, but it’s absolutely worth it. The surrounding area also features beautiful nature, charming villages, and cozy jungle lodges for overnight stays.

In our article about Sigiriya, we share not only tips on which rock to climb and where to get the best views, but also our favorite spots for lunch and dinner, as well as cozy places to stay. This way, you can make the most of your visit to this amazing destination!

5. Kandy

In the first part of your Sri Lanka itinerary, you’ll discover much of the country’s stunning natural beauty. But with Kandy as your next destination, you enter the cultural heart of the island. The city is busy and chaotic, offering a great insight into the daily life of the local people.

A very famous attraction in Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth, a Buddhist pilgrimage site. But what we personally loved doing in Kandy was wandering through the lively, colorful, and fragrant markets. And don’t forget to take a morning stroll through the Royal Botanical Gardens. What a beautiful place.

Although traffic in Kandy can be a bit chaotic, it’s a fascinating place to plan a stop before heading into the green hills. We strolled along the lake and enjoyed some surprisingly great hotspots, which we share in our article with the best tips for Kandy.

6. Nuwara Eliya

By now, you’ve probably realized that Sri Lanka is an incredibly diverse destination and it doesn’t stop here. The next stop on your journey is Nuwara Eliya, the country’s famous tea region. It’s the highest-altitude town we visited during our Sri Lanka trip, and compared to the other destinations, it’s much cooler here. Nuwara Eliya is especially known for its tea plantations and colonial influences dating back to the British era in the 19th century.

Many travelers continue from Kandy to Ella by train, which is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. And we definitely agree, but it’s also an incredibly popular route at the moment. That’s why we chose to drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya in our tuk-tuk, and what a sight it was! Along the way, you pass charming mountain villages and travel through stunning tea plantations. And let’s not forget the impressive Ramboda Falls, where we made a long stop. Curious about all the highlights? Here are our tips for visiting the most beautiful tea region in Sri Lanka!

7. Ella

After all the sights of the tea fields and mountain villages, it’s time for one of Sri Lanka’s most popular destinations: Ella. This mountain village has a relaxed vibe and is nestled in lush greenery, surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and tea plantations. It’s a wonderful place to spend a few days.

The must-see here is, of course, the Nine Arch Bridge, where you can watch the train pass through the lush tropical landscape, a truly spectacular sight. You can also take on Ella Rock or hike to the top of Little Adam’s Peak for stunning views over the valley. And after all that hiking, there’s nothing better than relaxing at one of the many cozy cafés in the village.

We share all our tips for Ella in our article: from the best hikes to the coziest cafés for a bite to eat, and lovely accommodations to stay in (with views of the iconic Nine Arch Bridge).

8. Hiriketiya

After the mountain adventures, it’s time to head to Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Hiriketiya, also known as “Hiri,” is a small paradise for surfers and beach lovers. The bay is surrounded by palm trees, and the village has a lovely laid-back vibe. It’s an amazing place to learn to surf, relax, and enjoy the trendy cafés.

For us, Hiriketiya was the perfect place to fully get into the ultimate holiday mood. Days on the southern coast are all about doing nothing and enjoying everything at your own pace. But as adventurous travelers, of course we also wanted to discover what there is to do in and around Hiriketiya. Curious too? Nearby Hiri, you’ll find one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. You can read all about it in our extensive article on the best spots in Hiriketiya.

9. Ahangama

Continuing along the southern coast, you’ll reach Ahangama, a destination that’s gradually gaining popularity. Ahangama is known as Sri Lanka’s surf hotspot, attracting surfers from all over the world. The beaches here are a bit wilder, the waves higher, but the laid-back vibe is just as enjoyable as what you experienced in Hiriketiya.

What makes Ahangama such a great place is that you can both surf (or learn to surf) and relax. There are plenty of trendy cafés, like Black Honey Café, and beautiful boutique hotels. Because the sea can be a bit rough here, many of these hotspots also have a pool where you can spend the day. You’re also close to other charming coastal towns, such as Weligama, famous for its stilt fishermen. Want to know the best places to stay and our favorite hotspots? Check out our article with tips for Ahangama.

Tip: Are you driving from Hiriketiya to Ahangama by tuk-tuk? Make a stop along the way at Dondra Lighthouse and the famous Coconut Hill in Mirissa. Both spots make for a nice break on the route to Ahangama, and each has a café where you can grab a drink, though the bar at Coconut Hill is a bit pricey.

10. Galle

No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without a visit to Galle. This historic city on the southern coast feels very different from the rest of the island. Within the walls of the old fort, you can wander through narrow streets filled with colonial buildings, colorful shops, and cozy restaurants. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric place to stroll, pick up souvenirs, and soak in the vibrant surroundings.

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a unique mix of old and new. You can spend hours wandering its streets, relaxing at a charming café, or enjoying the sunset at the iconic lighthouse. Also, check out our article with things to do in Galle: we share the must-see spots, the best places to eat, and how to end your Sri Lanka trip in style!

Transportation in Sri Lanka: from tuk-tuk to private driver

There are many ways to get around in Sri Lanka, but we chose to embrace the adventure and explore in our own tuk-tuk—and we highly recommend it! Traveling in your own tuk-tuk is affordable, gives you complete freedom, and offers a unique glimpse into local life along the way. Does this sound like something for you? Then read all about our tuk-tuk adventures in Sri Lanka.

We chose to travel the entire route by tuk-tuk, but you can also opt to do certain parts by train, such as the journey between Kandy and Ella. This ride is often called one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world—and for good reason.

If you want to travel through Sri Lanka on a budget, you can also use public transportation. It’s not always the most comfortable option, and you’ll often have to walk part of the way to reach your final destination.

Looking for more comfort? You can also explore Sri Lanka with a private driver. This is a common and affordable way to get around the country. A great advantage of this travel style is that, just like with your own tuk-tuk, you can stop wherever and whenever you want.

How to shorten or extend your Sri Lanka roundtrip?

The great thing about planning a roundtrip through Sri Lanka is that you can tailor it entirely to your own preferences. This 3-week itinerary was the perfect balance for us between nature and culture, as well as adventure and relaxation.

Do you have a little less time? Then you can choose to travel directly to Kandy after arrival. This can be done by train, but also by tuktuk or private driver. From there you can easily go to Sigiriya and continue the route as we did. You can also skip Nuwara Eliya and travel from Kandy directly to Ella by train.

In the end, it's all about your personal preferences: do you want to spend longer in the mountains and nature or spend more time on the coast relaxing? There are plenty of ways to shorten or expand the route.
