In this article, we share our favorite sights in Kandy, the best restaurants to try authentic Sri Lankan flavors, and tips for cozy accommodations close to the city center. Whether you’re visiting for a short stay or a bit longer, our recommendations will help you make the most of your time in this cultural capital.
What to do in Kandy: best things to see, eat and explore
Although we only spent a short time in Kandy, we found some great spots worth sharing. These personal tips will help you enjoy the city at a relaxed pace, from a stroll around the lake to fresh juices at lively local hotspots.
1. Take a walk around Kandy Lake
One of the best ways to soak up the atmosphere in Kandy is by taking a walk around the lake. It is right in the heart of the city, but still feels surprisingly peaceful. The full loop takes about an hour and offers charming sights along the way. You'll see locals relaxing on benches, monitor lizards basking in the sun, and the occasional monkey darting through the trees. For us, this was the perfect escape from the crowds and the busy city traffic.
Tip: Our favorite time for a walk around the lake is at sunset. The warm glow of the setting sun casts a beautiful light over the city, making the experience even more magical.
2. Have lunch at Secret Alley
Looking for a great lunch spot? Head to Secret Alley! Tucked away in a charming little alley, it’s a hidden gem. The vibe is modern and cozy, with a menu full of fresh dishes like smoothie bowls, wraps, and excellent coffee. It’s the perfect place to relax and recharge away from the hustle and bustle of Kandy.
3. Stroll the local markets
Kandy offers several vibrant markets to explore. One popular spot is the covered souvenir and clothing market beneath Torington Park. It’s a great place to browse for unique gifts, from clothing and wood carvings to typical Sri Lankan souvenirs. Don’t forget: bargaining is part of the fun here!
If you continue a bit further toward the Kandy Municipal Central Market, you’ll find a much livelier scene. The stalls here overflow with fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, meat, and fish. It’s crowded, the aromas are intense, and it feels like you’ve stepped right into the heart of local life. You don’t even have to buy anything to appreciate the vibrant atmosphere. All your senses will be awakened. For us, this market is a must-visit if you want to experience Kandy in a raw and authentic way.
4. Wander through the city center of Kandy
Exploring Kandy on foot is the best way to experience the city’s true vibe. Wander through bustling streets and narrow alleys stacked with colorful clothing, crowded local snack stalls, and the tempting aromas of samosas and sweet rotti. Watch as crowds of locals crisscross around you, immersing yourself fully in the lively atmosphere of this vibrant Sri Lankan city.
By walking through Kandy’s city center yourself, you truly feel the city’s vibrant rhythm. You’ll see schoolchildren in uniform waiting for buses, vendors enthusiastically selling their goods, and massive buses squeezing through the streets with squealing brakes and constant honking. It’s chaotic, lively, and utterly captivating. A feast for the eyes and a genuine taste of everyday life in Kandy.
5. Dine at Hideout Lounge
If you’re looking for a great spot to end your day in Kandy, Hideout Lounge is our top recommendation. This cozy restaurant is tucked away in a quiet corner near the bustling city center and just a short walk from the lake. As you climb the stairs, you’re immediately greeted by a relaxed vibe: colorful lights, a boho touch, and good music playing softly in the background.
What makes Hideout such a great dining tip in Kandy is its surprisingly creative menu. You’ll find Sri Lankan dishes with a modern twist, from curry burritos and jackfruit tacos to noodles with spicy sambal and freshly made dumplings. There’s plenty on offer for vegetarians and vegans too, making it a perfect spot for everyone.
6. Visit Peradeniya Botanical Gardens
Just outside the hustle and bustle of Kandy, you’ll find one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful green spaces: the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. This expansive garden is a peaceful oasis, perfect for spending a few relaxing hours. Stroll beneath towering palm trees, breathe in fragrant herbs, admire vibrant orchids, and explore an impressive collection of tropical plants. The famous avenue lined with king palms is truly a sight to behold.
From downtown Kandy you can get there in about 20 minutes by tuktuk. We visited the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens en route to Nuwara Eliya, the next destination on our tour of Sri Lanka. It was ideal because it allowed us to drive out of town early in the morning before rush hour to recharge at the park and then drive on. You can park your tuktuk opposite the park entrance, we paid 100 rupees for this.
What is the best place to stay in Kandy?
Finding a good place to stay in busy Kandy can be challenging, but luckily there are plenty of nice spots to unwind. We deliberately chose a hotel just outside the city center, so we could enjoy the vibrant city life during the day and retreat to peace and quiet at night.
Highly recommended is SWP Eco Lodge. This small-scale accommodation is quietly located within walking distance of both the lake and downtown, yet far enough to escape the crowds. The modern rooms feature plenty of wood accents, large windows, and a lovely balcony or terrace with views of the surrounding greenery.
Practical tips for your visit to Kandy
Visiting Kandy requires a bit of preparation. The city can feel overwhelming due to heavy traffic and the tropical heat, so planning your day well is important. We recommend starting early in the morning when the temperatures are cooler and the city is just coming to life. Don’t forget to bring a bottle of water, wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and pack something to cover your shoulders and knees, especially if you plan to visit Kandy’s famous temples.
Getting around Kandy is easy by tuktuk, but keep in mind that travel times can be longer than expected due to traffic. To truly experience the city’s vibrant chaos, aromas, and local life, we recommend exploring on foot at least part of the time. A day in Kandy is usually enough to visit the famous sights and soak up the unique atmosphere. Afterwards, you can easily travel further by train to Ella, this is one of the most beautiful train routes of Sri Lanka, if not in the world.
