Visa requirements for Sri Lanka depend on your nationality and the length and purpose of your stay. Please consult the official website of the Sri Lankan governmentfor the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Please note that your passport must still be valid for at least 6 months on the day of departure from Sri Lanka. This is a general rule used in many countries. Any visa requirements can always change, so please check before you leave current travel advice for Sri Lanka.

No vaccinations are required for Sri Lanka, although some shots are recommended:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, polio)

  • Hepatitis A

  • Typhoid fever (especially if you eat a lot of local food)

Depending on your travel duration and type of trip, Hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis may also be recommended. Get advice from the GGD or a travel vaccination clinic at least 6 weeks before departure. This will ensure that you are well prepared for your trip.

That's a good question and depends entirely on your travel style and expectations. Sri Lanka is a surprisingly easy destination to travel, but the choice of type of on-site transportation will depend on whether you are traveling alone, with your partner, family or group of friends.

Do you travel alone and fancy a carefree vacation? Then a group trip (for singles) is a nice choice. You travel with a fixed itinerary, in a friendly group and everything is arranged for you. Ideal if you want to see a lot in a short time, but also like to meet other travelers.

On the contrary, are you adventurous? Then you can map out your own route on your own tour of Sri Lanka. Local buses can get you surprisingly far for very little money, and tuktuks or cabs can also be used to cover short distances. Those who want to be really adventurous can even rent their own tuktuk. This is, we speak from experience, a unique adventure where you literally dive into everyday Sri Lankan life. Curious about our experience? Read all about traveling through Sri Lanka in a tuktuk.

Are you traveling with children or just want a little more comfort? Then traveling around with a private driver is an ideal option. This way of traveling is very common in Sri Lanka, affordable and relaxed. You determine your own route, you can stop wherever you want and your driver knows the country like the back of his hand.

Sri Lanka is known for its impressive nature, ancient temples and rich culture. During a round trip you will discover one highlight after another. These are our favorite places in Sri Lanka:

  • Negombo: a leisurely start on the west coast with colorful fishing boats and a lively fish market;
  • Wilpattu National Park: on safari in one of the country's oldest and most pristine wildlife parks;
  • Anuradhapura: the former capital of Ceylon, full of ancient and restored stupas
  • Sigiriya: climb the iconic Lion Rock for spectacular jungle views;
  • Kandy: the cultural capital with the famous Temple of the Tooth and atmospheric markets;
  • Nuwara Eliya: a green oasis among tea fields, with colonial charm and fresh mountain air;
  • Ella: a laid-back mountain village surrounded by waterfalls, tea plantations and impressive hikes;
  • Hiriketiya: a hidden gem for surfers and sun lovers, with a relaxing atmosphere on a tropical bay;
  • Ahangama: the place for yoga, surf and atmospheric cafes on the south coast;
  • Galle: wander through the charming old fortress full of colonial buildings, boutiques and sea views.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on where you’re going. Due to the island’s two monsoon seasons, the weather varies by region. Planning to explore the south and west, including Colombo, Galle or Hiriketiya? Then the best travel time is from December to April, when the weather is dry and sunny. Heading to the north or east: places like Trincomalee or Arugam Bay? Visit between May and September, when these regions enjoy the best conditions. Knowing when to go helps you make the most of your Sri Lanka itinerary.

We traveled through Sri Lanka in June and July, which falls during the low season. One of the biggest perks of traveling during this time? You’ll often have popular sights and beaches almost entirely to yourself. Along the south coast of Sri Lanka, where we visited places like Hiriketiya, Ahangama and Galle, we hardly noticed the rainy season. The occasional shower was short and refreshing, and the peaceful atmosphere made it well worth it.

You can activate the eSIM before departure, so you'll have instant internet access upon arrival in Sri Lanka. There is so much to experience during a tour of Sri Lanka. These special experiences will make your trip truly unforgettable:

  • Go on safari in Wilpattu National Park: spot elephants, sloth bears and even a leopard on a jeep safari in Sri Lanka's largest national park;
  • Take a cooking workshop at Ella Spice Garden: Learn the secrets of Sri Lankan cuisine during a fun and educational cooking class in Ella;
  • Learn to surf on the south coast: places like Hiriketiya and Ahangama are ideal for beginning surfers. There is a relaxed atmosphere and the waves are perfect to practice on;
  • Climb the iconic Pidurangala Rock and Lion's Rock in Sigiriya: these impressive rocks are located in the middle of the jungle and, after a considerable climb, offer a beautiful panoramic view;
  • Take a train ride from Kandy to Ella: one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. On the way you will see tea plantations, mountain villages and green valleys passing by. Book your tickets on time and reasonably priced via 12GO.
  • Make your own jewelry in Galle: melt silver into a beautiful ring and add a gemstone of your choice.

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

In most places across the country, you can pay with both debit and credit cards. Keep in mind that many businesses charge a small fee (often around 3%) for card payments.

It’s a good idea to always carry some cash, especially for small purchases, local markets or tuk-tuk rides. You can withdraw money at ATMs throughout Sri Lanka. Most machines allow you to withdraw up to LKR 200,000 per day, though limits may vary depending on your card or bank.

Sometimes, foreign bank cards don’t work with local ATMs. To avoid surprises, consider setting up a travel-friendly bank account with providers like Wiseor Revolut. These often offer better exchange rates and make it easier to pay and withdraw money abroad.

Combining Sri Lanka with the Maldives is a popular choice, and for good reason. These destinations complement each other perfectly: adventurous days in lush Sri Lanka followed by total relaxation on a tropical island in the Maldives. The two countries are just an hour's flight apart.

The easiest and fastest way to travel between the two is by plane. From Colombo (Sri Lanka’s capital), several direct flights per day take you to Malé, the capital of the Maldives. The flight takes about 1.5 hours. We recommend ending your trip in the Maldives. That way, you can completely unwind after your round trip through Sri Lanka. Tip: Make sure to check the flight schedule and travel time to your island in the Maldives. Some islands are easily reached by speedboat, while others require a domestic flight or seaplane transfer.
