Ahangama is one of those places where you instantly feel at home. From the moment you arrive, you notice it straight away: the relaxed surf vibe, swaying palm trees, and the sound of waves in the background. This isn’t a place overrun by mass tourism. Instead, you’ll find hidden beaches, cozy beach bars, and a laid-back atmosphere that invites you to let go and unwind. During my trip through Sri Lanka, Ahangama truly surprised me with its unique spots, charming hotspots, and that rare sense of freedom you can only experience in places like this. In this article, I’m sharing my favorite tips, the best things to do in Ahangama, and, of course, my personal experiences.
What to do in Ahangama, Sri Lanka?
From sunrise surf lessons to relaxing on secluded beaches and savoring fresh tropical fruit at a beach bar, there’s never a dull moment in Ahangama. This coastal town in Sri Lanka is full of exciting activities and hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.
1. Discover Ahangama’s most beautiful secluded beach
One of the best discoveries in Ahangama was the small, secluded spot known as Secret Beach Ahangama, just outside the town center. Here, there’s no crowds. Only peace, soft sand, and crystal-clear waters. The beach is surrounded by a lush mangrove and towering rock formations. It’s the perfect place to recharge, read a good book, or simply enjoy the sunset. There are no facilities on the beach itself, but along the main road, you’ll find a few hotspots where you can grab a bite or a drink.
2. Lunch with a view of the rice fields at Black Honey Cafe
If you love good food in a serene setting, Black Honey Cafe is an absolute must-visit. This charming spot is tucked away among the rice fields and serves delicious, freshly prepared dishes. My favorite? The avocado toast paired with a refreshing iced coffee, all while taking in the lush green surroundings. It’s one of those places where you could easily spend hours if your schedule allows. And when you’re soaking up Ahangama’s relaxed vibes, you can even spend an afternoon by the pool here. The cafe isn’t large, but it’s incredibly beautiful.
3. Best places to surf in Ahangama
Ahangama attracts a lot of surfers, and for good reason. The south coast is famous for its powerful, consistent waves, which are especially appealing to more experienced surfers. One of the best beaches for spotting surfers or just relaxing yourself is Kabalana Beach. This is also where you’ll find the well-known surf spot Marshmallow in Ahangama.
If you want to practice your surfing a bit more, nearby Weligama or Hiriketiya offer calmer spots perfect for mastering the basics. Early in the morning, as the sun slowly rises and the sea gently laps in peace, is perhaps the most magical time to hit the water.
4. Stay at Blue Waves Surf House – Jungle Villa amidst the rice fields
Want to experience the real Ahangama vibe? Spend a few nights at Blue Waves Surf House – Jungle Villa, tucked away among the rice fields and just across from the popular Black Honey Cafe. Wake up to the sound of birds, enjoy breakfast in the garden, and take a dip in the pool overlooking the rice fields. The atmosphere is relaxed, the rooms are cozy and beautifully decorated, and the German owner is happy to share tips for the best spots in the area.
Jungle Villa is the brand-new villa of the owner, but the original property, Blue Waves Surf House – Beach Hotel, is also an amazing place to stay. Here, you’ll enjoy a beautiful room with sea views. It’s a bit further from the town center, but with a tuk-tuk, you can get there in no time.
5. Dine with sea view at Kai Ahangama
A hotspot you’ll often see popping up on social media in Ahangama is Kai, and it’s easy to see why! The sea views are stunning, especially in the evening when you settle in for a meal and drinks as the sun sets. The gentle sound of the waves adds to the atmosphere, making you feel completely relaxed. The vibe is great, and the food is absolutely delicious. The menu is packed with fresh, colorful dishes and tropical drinks, perfect for a laid-back day on Sri Lanka’s south coast.
6. Spot Sri Lanka’s iconic Stilt Fishermen
Along Sri Lanka’s south coast, especially between Weligama and Koggala, you’ll encounter one of the island’s most iconic sights: the traditional stilt fishermen. Perched high above the water on narrow wooden poles, they practice an ancient fishing method that was once used to catch fish without a boat. You can still see them in several spots along the coast, including the photogenic Coconut Beach in Weligama, just a 15-minute drive from Ahangama. The best times to visit are early in the morning or around sunset, when the light turns golden and the atmosphere feels almost magical. Keep in mind that the fishermen sometimes ask for a small contribution if you want to take photos, and if you’re lucky, you might even get a chance to climb onto a pole yourself!
7. Enjoy the best sushi in Ahangama at HASHI
Wherever I am, I’m always on the lookout for a great coffee spot, but I’m equally alert for an excellent sushi restaurant. And in Ahangama, I’ve found a fantastic hotspot: HASHI. This cozy restaurant sits right on a charming terrace by the sea. With a gentle breeze, views of the waves, and even the iconic stilt fishermen if they’re around, you can enjoy some of the most delicious sushi here. Everything is freshly and skillfully prepared by HASHI’s small but passionate team.
How to get to Ahangama?
Ahangama is a laid-back surf village on Sri Lanka’s south coast and, in our opinion, a perfect place to end your road trip if you’re traveling clockwise around the island. You can easily reach Ahangama by train or bus from Galle or Matara, or by tuk-tuk from Hiriketiya. For a pleasant stay in Ahangama, it’s best to book at least two nights, giving you plenty of time to soak up the relaxed vibe and enjoy the beaches.
What is the best time to visit Ahangama?
The best time to visit Ahangama is during the dry seasons, from December to March and from June to September. During these months, the sun shines most often and the chances of rain are low. Are you mainly here for surfing? Then the ideal period is between November and April, when the waves are at their best.
