Booking a hotel in Sri Lanka can be just as exciting as planning your itinerary. Will you choose a luxurious boutique villa with an infinity pool, or a charming guesthouse where you can experience authentic Sri Lankan hospitality? Maybe you dream of waking up by the beach, or perhaps staying amid lush tea plantations is more your style. With such a wide range of hotels and accommodations in Sri Lanka, it can be difficult to decide. To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of 20 top hotels in Sri Lanka in this article. For each destination, we share our favorite places to stay, so you can always find a hotel or guesthouse that fits your budget and travel style—making your stay an unforgettable part of your Sri Lanka adventure.
1. These are the best stays in Negombo
Negombo is a great place to start or end your Sri Lanka trip in a relaxed way. If you stay at Serendib Village Guest House, you’ll enjoy a small-scale, personal hotel experience. This charming accommodation offers spacious, clean rooms, a swimming pool, and a riverside terrace. The owners are very friendly, the location is excellent, and you’re within walking distance of the beach and local restaurants. If you’re looking for more of a resort vibe, Negombo The Nature Villa and Cabanas is a fantastic alternative. With a large pool, beautiful garden, and comfortable lounge, you can enjoy peace and space while still being within walking distance of the beach, attractions, and popular hotspots. Both accommodations offer great value for money and friendly service!
2. Safari lodges and unique stays in Wilpattu
If you visit Wilpattu National Park during your Sri Lanka trip, this is a destination where experiences and nature take center stage. If you’re looking for accommodations that enhance this adventure, there are two fantastic options we recommend. Choose Big Game Wilpattu if you want to fully immerse yourself in nature: stay in a comfortable safari tent, wake up to jungle sounds, enjoy a campfire under the stars, and go on an early morning jeep safari. It’s glamping with a true “in the wild” experience.
If you prefer a bit more comfort, The Backwaters Lodge is a great option. This lodge is located along the water, offering cozy rooms, comfortable beds, and a relaxed setting where you can unwind after your safari with a drink on the veranda. Both accommodations are conveniently located for game drives and are known for their excellent service, so you really can’t go wrong!
3. Cozy hotels in the historical city Anuradhapura
In Anuradhapura, Hotel Heladiv is the perfect place to return to after a day exploring the stupas. The spacious rooms feature comfortable beds and excellent showers, while on the ground floor you’ll find a refreshing swimming pool. In the evenings, you don’t even need to leave—the chef prepares delicious meals. The hotel is a bit off the beaten path, which makes it an ideal retreat. It’s definitely a hotel where we would happily book a room again!
A more luxurious option is Kumbura Resort, beautifully situated among the rice fields. Here, you can stay in a fantastic room, swim laps in the stunning pool, and enjoy exquisite culinary experiences at the restaurant.
4. Stays in Sigiriya with Lion Rock's view
In Sigiriya, there’s only one thing you want: to wake up with a view of the Lion Rock. The Lankapura Heritage hotel is a small-scale gem with just five rooms, a personal atmosphere, and perhaps the best view of the rock. In the morning, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast with a panorama of the rice fields and the rock—there’s no more magical way to start your day. It’s back-to-basics, yet extremely popular, so booking early is highly recommended.
Prefer a comfortable base with everything you need? Into the Wild is an excellent alternative. This well-appointed accommodation features a swimming pool, extremely friendly staff who make your stay even more enjoyable, and a fantastic location, especially if you’re exploring the area in your own tuktuk!
5. The best places to stay in Kandy: boutique hotels and eco lodges
Kandy can feel chaotic, so we deliberately chose a hotel just outside the city center. Explore the city during the day, and in the evening, escape the noise. SWP Eco Lodge is, in our opinion, highly recommended. The modern rooms, featuring plenty of wood and large windows, feel bright and airy, and the balcony or terrace with views of the greenery is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of strolling around the city.
If you enjoy the busy and chaotic city life of Kandy, Heritage Boutique by Seven Angels is a great choice. Step out the door, and you’re immediately in the city center, yet this accommodation feels like a peaceful oasis amidst the bustle. How they achieve it, we’re not sure, but it’s a wonderfully serene place to stay. Just the ambiance alone makes us very happy!
6. Charming hotels in the idyllic town Nuwara Eliya
In Nuwara Eliya, we chose Pigeons Nest: simple, yet perched on a hill with breathtaking views. Sunrise and sunset here are truly spectacular. The rooms are basic, making it a suitable stay for one night. The lodge is quite remote, so without your own transport, it’s not easy to reach restaurants or nearby attractions.
If you’re staying in Nuwara Eliya for only a short time, it’s smarter to stay in the city center. This way, you can easily step out in the evening for a walk or visit a nearby restaurant. In that case, The Ramp is an excellent choice: modern, cozy rooms, a fantastic location, and great value for money. It’s no wonder it’s a favorite among many travelers!
7. Staying overnight between Ella's lush green hills
Want to wake up surrounded by nature? Tina Nature Villa is an idyllic hideaway tucked into the greenery of Ella. The rooms have a treehouse feel, and each balcony offers views over a misty valley. With a bit of luck, you might even see the iconic train crossing the Nine Arches Bridge. After a day of hiking, you can take a refreshing dip in the pool, and in the morning, the birdsong will naturally wake you up. The property is just outside the center, but still within walking distance of the most famous attractions!
If you prefer to stay in the heart of the town and in the midst of all the action, you’ll find plenty of options in and around the center. Hide Ella Hotel & Resort stands out with its stylish, spacious rooms and a wonderful swimming pool. It’s ideal if you want to roll into bed right after dinner while still having cafés and restaurants just around the corner.
8. Cozy beach hotels in Hiriketiya: these are the best places to stay
In Hiriketiya, we chose Dots Bay House, a relaxed spot right on the bay where you wake up to the sound of the sea. In the evening, you can stroll straight from your cottage into the lively beach atmosphere. It quickly feels like home and perfectly matches the laid-back rhythm of Hiriketiya. The only thing to keep in mind is that there are often parties during the high season. Fun for some, but less ideal if you’re a light sleeper or seeking tranquility. In that case, The Yard Hiriketiya is a great alternative: cozy, comfortable, and much quieter, while still offering rooms within walking distance of the beach and the best local hotspots.
9. Relaxing and beautiful stays in Ahangama
For the true Ahangama experience, stay at Blue Waves Surf House – Jungle Villa. Hidden among the rice fields and right across from the popular Black Honey Cafe, you’ll wake up to birdsong, enjoy breakfast in the garden, and take a refreshing dip in the pool overlooking lush greenery. The atmosphere is relaxed, the rooms are stylishly decorated, and the German owner is happy to share his best local tips. If you prefer to stay right by the sea, the original Blue Waves Surf House – Beach Hotel is a fantastic choice. It’s a bit further from the center, but just a short tuktuk ride away!
10. The best boutique hotels in the historical town Galle
To fully experience the charm of Galle, stay within the walls of the historic fort. Among the colonial buildings, you’ll find cozy boutique hotels with serene courtyards and a relaxed atmosphere. Taru Villas Rampart Street is one such gem: stylish rooms around the pool and a setting that perfectly matches the character of the fort. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, No 05 Middle Street is a great choice. The accommodation is modern, with nice rooms and good facilities, though it does not have a pool.
