Why you should climb Mount Christoffel during your trip to Curaçao

In the rugged northwest of Curaçao, called Bandabou by locals, lies the Christoffel National Park, the island's largest national park. This nature reserve is bursting with biodiversity: from towering cacti and iguanas to rare flowers and colorful birds. You can follow several hiking trails here, but the most popular (and adventurous) is without a doubt the climb to the top of Mount Christoffel.

This 372-meter mountain is Curaçao's highest point and offers spectacular views of the island. During the climb you will discover the rugged beauty of the park up close, and once at the top you will be rewarded with panoramic views you won't soon forget. A must-do for nature lovers and adventurers and without a doubt one of the best things to do on Curacao

Climbing Mount Christoffel: this is what the hike looks like

We would like to take you through our experience of climbing Mount Christoffel, so you can get a good idea of what to expect during this adventurous hike on Curaçao.

The beginning of the climb is manageable. You walk along a flat dirt path, surrounded by arid plants, trees and cacti, toward the base of the mountain. From there, it gets spicier: the path climbs steeper and steeper, and it feels like you are endlessly climbing stairs. Eventually the trail turns into a rougher route of stones and rocks, where you really have to climb and scramble. Pay close attention because some of the rocks are loose. Take the occasional time to take a break. After all, the views along the way are already stunning.

The last 10 meters to the top are the toughest. Here you literally go up on all fours, from rock to rock, through narrow passages. You have the choice of going up clockwise or counterclockwise, clockwise is a little easier. However you go: it takes some perseverance, but the reward at the top is more than worth it.

The highest point of Curaçao: the view from Christoffel Mountain

After about 45 minutes to an hour of climbing, you reach the highest point in Curaçao: the top of Mount Christoffel at 372 meters. We stood there sweaty but satisfied, and took a moment to recover on one of the rocks. That moment when you reach the top really gives such a proud and fulfilled feeling.

If you are lucky with the weather, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of all of Curaçao. On clear days, you can even see Venezuela! During our first ascent we had that luck, but on our second time, visibility was limited by a light fog. Still, the view from Mount Christoffel remains impressive. You look out over the sea, the green hills of Bandabou and the rugged rock formations below.

Don't forget to take a few photos at the concrete pole that marks the official highest point. You made it after all!

Christoffel mountain descent: this is what the way down looks like

The descent of Mount Christoffel is often considered easier, but don't underestimate it. What you have climbed up, you must of course descend again. Especially the first part, where you have to clamber over rocks, remains a challenge. After that, the path gradually becomes easier.

Be careful where you place your feet, as some of the stones are loose and the dirt path can also be treacherously slippery. Take your time, especially if your legs are a bit tired from the climb up.

We did a total of about 2 over the entire hike: an hour up, 15 minutes of rest and enjoyment at the summit, and 45 minutes down. And fair is fair: it was well worth the effort.
