Why stay in Willemstad on Curaçao?

As far as we are concerned, Willemstad is one of the finest places to stay on Curaçao, and for several reasons. The city is centrally located on the island, allowing you to reach the most beautiful beaches or the rugged west of Curaçao in no time by rental car. In addition, Willemstad is the place for those who love fun and good food. The city is bursting with nice restaurants, cozy bars and lively squares. Especially in Pietermaai and Punda it is great to spend the evening.

Just looking for a unique overnight stay? Then this is the place to be. In and around the center you will find many small-scale accommodations and boutique hotels with character. Often you will find these hotels in colorful monumental buildings.

Willemstad is divided into several neighborhoods, each with its own character. This not only makes the city super diverse, but also a lot of fun to explore and to plan your stay accordingly. And believe us: you won't get bored here anyway. There is so much to see and do in the city. Curious about the best places to visit? Take a look at our article about what to do in Willemstad.

You can choose to book your hotel and airline ticket to Curaçao separately, but for deals we also definitely recommend checking out the deals from Corendon and TUI.

What are the nicest neighborhoods in Willemstad?

If you choose to stay in Willemstad, which district should you be in? That depends on what you are looking for in your vacation to Curaçao. In Punda and Otrobanda you will discover the rich history of the city, while in Pietermaai you should be for the good restaurants and stylish boutique hotels. For beach lovers, Mambo Beach is ideal. Of course we share our favorite spots with you!

Staying in Punda: colorful and centrally located on Curaçao

Punda is the beating heart of Willemstad, and perhaps the most iconic neighborhood in Curaçao. Think brightly colored facades along the Handelskade, narrow streets full of colonial buildings, and cozy squares where there is always something to do. Punda is ideal for travelers who love culture, history and liveliness.

You'll find a mix of historic architecture, stores and boutiques, and some of Willemstad's most famous sights, such as the Pontjesbrug (Queen Emma Bridge) and Fort Amsterdam. Because Punda is so central, it makes a good base for exploring the rest of the island. And with the lively Pietermaai within walking distance, you're also close to great restaurants and bars for the evening.

Hotel tips in Punda

One of the most accessible yet charming options in Punda is the Atelier Skalo Boutique Hotel. Located just a few minutes' walk from Playa Marichi, this colorful spot is ideal for those who want to be in the middle of the city without paying top dollar. With a rating of 8.9 and starting prices around €75 per night (in 2025), this is a wonderful base. You'll sleep in comfortable rooms, some with pool views and balconies. And in the morning you can enjoy a tasty continental breakfast.

Could it be a little more exclusive for you? Then Villa Amalie & Villa Curiel a fine choice. Nestled among tropical greenery, these stylish villas offer a combination of luxury and homeliness. Think a beautiful pool, a cozy garden, a cozy communal lounge and rooms with flair. Some even have a kitchen, handy if you want to cook for yourself sometime. The hotel scores a 9.1 and is just minutes from famous highlights like the Pontjes Bridge and Avila Beach.

Staying in Otrobanda in Willemstad: lively and local

Otrobanda, literally "the other shore," is right across from Punda and is perhaps Willemstad's most surprising neighborhood. Where on one side of the Pontjesbrug you will find the famous Handelskade, on the other side you will discover the colorful alleys and street art of Otrobanda.

This area feels a bit more raw and local, which is what makes it so nice to stay here. Close to the bustling Kura Hulanda Village (and historic Kura Hulanda Museum) and the modern Renaissance shopping mall, and an easy walk across the Pontjes Bridge to downtown Punda, you have the best of both worlds at your fingertips.

Hotel tips in Otrobanda

In Otrobanda, you'll find a mix of history and creativity, and this is reflected in the accommodations. One of our favorites is the Kura Botanica Hotel, a small-scale 4-star hotel in the middle of town, but so quiet and green that you would almost forget you are in the heart of Willemstad. The hotel is located in the attractive Kura Hulanda area, between colonial buildings and with a beautiful courtyard garden where you can relax. There's a pool, gym and cozy bar, and you're within walking distance of great restaurants. You can regularly find great deals here, sometimes from as little as €160 per night, so keep an eye on Booking.com!

Looking for all-inclusive Curaçao? Then The Reef At Mangrove Beach an excellent choice. This 5-star hotel is right on the beach, has swim-up rooms and multiple à la carte restaurants so it doesn't feel massive at all. We slept here ourselves and found it a really nice place to be pampered. The best way to book The Rif is as a package deal through Corendon, which regularly offers great deals.

Another insane option in Otrobanda is Curaçao Gardens. This colorful accommodation is located in a historic part of the neighborhood, close to the famous Queen Emma Bridge and hotspot Maira's Kitchen (highly recommended, you can also find that tip in our blog about the best hotspots in Willemstad). Curaçao Gardens offers stylish apartments, some even with a small private pool!

Staying in Pietermaai: hip and charming hotels on Curaçao

Pietermaai is without a doubt one of the nicest neighborhoods to stay in Willemstad. This historic neighborhood is bursting with colorful facades, cozy wine bars, boutique hotels and tasteful restaurants. It's a mix of Caribbean charm with a touch of boho chic. We love it!

The neighborhood is right next to Punda, so you can walk right to the iconic Pontjesbrug. At night, the neighborhood really comes alive: think live jazz, cozy courtyard gardens and great food at restaurants like MosaCaña.
