Will you wander with us through Willemstad's vibrant neighborhoods? It is one of the best things to do on Curacao. The city is full of surprises, with colorful houses, cozy streets and a charming mix of old and new. Each neighborhood is different, but they have one thing in common: they are sure to enchant you. Otrobanda: the new hip heart of Willemstad

Let's start with Otrobanda, one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods! Otrobanda used to be one of Willemstad's less pleasant neighborhoods, known for its high crime rates and neglected properties. The old colonial buildings, which once represented Curaçao's beautiful heritage, had fallen into disrepair and the streets were often not the safest to enter.

But in recent years, Otrobanda has undergone an incredible transformation. With the help of urban development projects and local initiatives, the neighborhood has been completely revamped. Dilapidated buildings have been renovated, the streetscape has been refreshed with colorful street art, and restaurants, boutiques and cultural hotspots have been added.

What used to be a run-down area is now the hip heart of Willemstad. It's the place to wander the picturesque alleys, admire local art and enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the newly-emerged cafes. Especially Kura Hulanda Village should be on your list. Otrobanda has retained its raw charm, but at the same time has become a bustling neighborhood with a mix of culture, history and conviviality.

Otrobanda is a safe neighborhood to explore these days, especially during the day. Like anywhere, it's always good to keep an eye on your belongings, especially at night. But all in all, you can walk around here with peace of mind.

Punda: the historic center of Willemstad

Punda is the vibrant, historic heart of Willemstad and the place to immerse yourself in Curaçao's rich culture. It is connected to Otrobanda by the well-known Pontjesbrug.

Start your day in Punda with a visit to Fort Amsterdam, which once served as a defensive structure in the 17th century and is now the administrative heart of Curaçao. Then stroll the colorful fresh market on Sha Caprileskade, where you can sample local delicacies. Also admire Willemstad's iconic Handelskade, because of course you haven't been to Curaçao without seeing it.

Every Thursday night, Punda comes alive during Punda Vibes. Willemstad's historic streets are then transformed into a vibrant mix of music, markets and even fireworks. It's a fun way to get a taste of the island's atmosphere, as locals and vacationers gather here to enjoy the energetic evening.

Pietermaai: the charming, trendy neighborhood of Curaçao

Pietermaai is the neighborhood where you feel the mix of history, culture and hip vibes everywhere. Located on the coast, it is characterized by colonial buildings transformed into stylish boutique hotels and trendy restaurants. During the day, stroll along the lively streets lined with local art and tropical flowers. At night, the neighborhood really comes alive with live music, illuminated courtyard gardens and cozy bars where mojitos flow abundantly.

Pietermaai is a place where the old Willemstad meets the new. The neighborhood emerged in the early 18th century as Willemstad began to burst at the seams. After the demolition of the city walls in 1860, the neighborhood was soon nicknamed "the Soho of Curaçao," thanks to the many entertainment venues that settled here. This has always remained true, although the neighborhood fell into considerable disrepair at the end of the 20th century. Fortunately, the charm of the colorful buildings was rediscovered and in recent years much has been invested in restoration and new life. Pietermaai is the place to be for a quiet stroll through the picturesque streets, but also for a lively night out.

2. Iconic sights in Willemstad on Curaçao

As soon as you set foot in Willemstad, a few iconic spots immediately catch your eye: the famous Pontjesbrug connecting Otrobanda and Punda, the picturesque Kura Hulanda Village and the impressive Kura Hulanda Museum. These highlights are definitely not to be missed during your visit to the city!

The Pontjesbrug: the icon of Willemstad

The Pontjesbrug, officially the Queen Emma Bridge, is without a doubt the best-known symbol of Willemstad. This unique, floating pedestrian bridge connects the neighborhoods of Punda and Otrobanda and lies like a cheerful garland across St. Anna Bay. What makes the bridge so special? It is built entirely on pontoons and can swing open as one to allow ships to pass through. An impressive feat of engineering and an architectural masterpiece from 1888 that still functions perfectly.

As soon as the bell rings, you know a ship is coming. Sometimes you are allowed to stay on the bridge while it is turning (quite an experience!), and otherwise you sail across for free with the ferry.

Tip: also come and have a look at night, when the Pontjesbrug is attractively illuminated in all kinds of colors.

The Kura Hulanda Museum: dive into the history of Curaçao

In the heart of Otrobanda lies one of the island's most impressive museums: the Kura Hulanda Museum. This museum takes you on a probing journey through the history of the transatlantic slave trade, in which Curaçao was a major hub. Here you will discover an extensive collection of artifacts, art and exhibits that tell the story of slavery, African cultures and the island's colonial past.

What makes this museum so special is not only its impressive content, but also the location itself: a beautifully restored historic building that was once part of slavery history.

Therefore, a visit to the Kura Hulanda Museum is not just another museum outing. It is a valuable moment of awareness and reflection. It helps you better understand what happened, and why that history is still so relevant today.
