What are the most beautiful villages on Lefkas in Greece? In this article we share them! You see, Lefkas is so incredibly versatile. The mountainous interior of Lefkas is full of authentic villages, while along the coast you can find countless Greek fishing villages. Van traditional mountain villages to cozy seaside towns with cozy tavernas: these are the villages you want visit during your vacation on Lefkas.
1. Englouvi
One of the first villages we visited on Lefkas was Englouvi and we can tell you: we were immediately enchanted by this beautiful village! In fact, this cozy mountain village reminded us so much of Zagoria, which for us is one of the most beautiful destinations in the interior of Greece.
The image of Englouvi is defined by a cozy village square with tavernas full of locals, an old church with wells and beautiful green surroundings. Englouvi is particularly known for the lentils grown here. It is claimed that these are the best lentils in all of Greece. A visit to the old church Agios Donatos is also worthwhile. All in all, Englouvi definitely belongs to one of the most beautiful villages of Lefkas.
Looking for a nice restaurant in Englouvi? Then head to Lithanofli and try the traditional lentil salad here!
2. Nikiana
Nikiana is a small and sprawling ribbon village located about 10 kilometers from Lefkas town in Greece. The village lies at the foot of the Skaros Mountains. Because of this, the surroundings are immeasurably green. In addition to green nature, you will also find a number of narrow sandy pebble beaches in Nikiana. There is also a small harbor with all kinds of sailing yachts and fishing boats. There are many tavernas, restaurants and a wide range of hotels and apartments in all price ranges. This, combined with its fine location, makes Nikiana an ideal residence on the island.
During our stay on Lefkas, we stayed in this village in the super fine Porto Galini Resort & Spa. A hotel with a private beach, two pools, a gym, two restaurants, a Sea Salt Spa & Wellness, a Kid's Club and a wide range of activities (such as yoga, tennis and supping). Although the hotel has all the amenities it does not feel massive at all. Exactly opposite Nikiana is the Greek mainland. The view as you stand on a sup in the sea at Porto Galini Hotel & Spa is therefore magnificent.
Are you fond of fresh fish dishes? Then head to the restaurant Taverna "O Minas."
3. Agios Nikitas
Another beautiful village, and nice place to stay on the island, is Agios Nikitas. A unique, small and car-free vacation address on Lefkas. You can hardly get more typically Greek than Agios Nikitas on the island. It is located about 13 kilometers from Lefkas Town and has about 100 inhabitants, most of whom work in fishing. The village is situated around a beautiful bay in a beautiful setting filled with olive groves and enchanting scenery.
Agios Nikitas is the only village on the west coast of Lefkas which is at sea level. Through the car-free street you walk past all kinds of colorful tavernas and stores to the sea. The beach is fine and there are beds, but it can be crowded in the summer. For some peace and quiet, it is best to go to Milos Beach, which is about a 15-minute (brisk!) hike.
A fine hotel to stay in Agios Nikitas is Odyssey Hotel. Still unsure about where to stay on the island? Then read our blog with the best places to stay on Lefkas.
4. Vasiliki
Also absolutely one of the most beautiful villages on Lefkas is Vasiliki. The village is located in the south of the island. Many large ships call at the port of Vassiliki. The village is especially known for its ideal conditions for water sports enthusiasts. Therefore, you can do very well here paragliding, windsurfing and sailing. But not only that, because it is also a very pleasant seaside resort for those who love cozy restaurants and strolling through boutiques. Indeed, around the harbor are several taverns, bars and cafes. There is also a pleasant shopping street with souvenir stores and boutiques. A simple but delicious restaurant to eat typical Greek pitas with gyros here is Yannis Grill House. They also have vegan versions here!
Vasiliki is one of the more popular resorts to stay at on Lefkas. A stay tip in Vasiliki is Ponti Beach Hotel, 150 meters from the beach. Do you mainly want to go to Lefkas for sun, sea and beach? Discover the most beautiful beaches on Lefkas in Greece.
5. Karya
Another cozy mountain village on Lefkas is Karya, also called Karia. This village is the largest mountain village on the island and therefore one of the better known. Karya is known for the traditional "Karsaniko" embroidery that is made and sold here. Central in the village is a square with all kinds of nice terraces, surrounded by ancient plane trees. So cozy to join a taverna plop down in Karya, but it is also lovely to stroll through the village's narrow cobblestone streets. Be sure to stop every now and then at one of the traditional stores selling sea spices, honey, wines and other local products.
Are you fond of tasting local dishes? Then head to the restaurant San Psema. Here, try "karsanaki," bread stuffed with vegetables and feta cheese. For wine lovers, the Karsanikos winery is a must. You can take a guided tour and do a wine tasting here.
