Things to Know About the Veluwe
Curious about wildlife spotting, the most beautiful hiking trails, and the best accommodations? We answer the most frequently asked questions about the Veluwe.
What are the Veluwe's "Big Five"?
The Veluwe is known for its iconic wildlife, collectively referred to as the Dutch ‘Big Five‘. These include the red deer, the roe deer, the wild boar, the mouflon, and the badger (or, increasingly these days, the wolf). Your best chance of spotting wildlife is during twilight—early in the morning or in the early evening—especially around the wildlife observation points in De Hoge Veluwe National Park and the Staatsbosbeheer areas.
What is the difference between De Hoge Veluwe National Park and Veluwezoom?
The Veluwe consists of several nature reserves. De Hoge Veluwe National Park is a fenced-in park that requires an admission ticket; among other things, it is home to the famous white bicycles and the Kröller-Müller Museum. Veluwezoom National Park is the oldest national park in the Netherlands; it is freely accessible and known for its rolling hills, such as the famous Posbank, which turns a beautiful shade of purple in August.
When does the heather in the Veluwe turn purple?
Heather typically blooms between mid-August and mid-September. During these weeks, the vast heathlands—such as the Posbank, the Renderklippen, and the Loenerheide—transform into a fairy-tale-like purple landscape. It is one of the most popular times of year for hikers and photographers.
