Looking for a unique destination on the Polish coast? Meet Sopot, a vibrant and trendy beach resort in Poland. Perfectly situated between the cities of Gdynia and Gdansk, it offers a wonderful blend of beach, culture, and nature for a holiday in the versatile Tri-City region. From strolling along Europe’s longest wooden pier to relaxing in one of the historic spas, the center of Sopot is bursting with unique sights and culinary hotspots. But what are the best things to do in Sopot? In this article, we share our personal insider tips and the 8 best activities for your visit to Sopot, Poland!
Sopot: the pearl of the Polish Riviera
While Poland might not be the first country that springs to mind when planning a beach holiday, Sopot proves the absolute opposite. It is with good reason that this city has been widely celebrated as the "Pearl of the Polish Riviera" since the nineteenth century. What makes Sopot so incredibly unique is its rare combination of an elegant, historic spa town and a vibrant, modern seaside resort boasting wide, fine-sand beaches along the Baltic Sea.
Sopot is nestled between the historic port city of Gdansk and the modern harbor town of Gdynia. Together, these three cities form the metropolitan area known as the Tri-City (Trójmiasto). The biggest advantage of this layout? You can easily combine the laid-back beach vibe of Sopot with the rich history and culture of its sister cities. The public transport system (specifically the SKM commuter train) connects them seamlessly, taking you right into the heart of Gdansk in just twenty minutes.
8 Best things to do in Sopot, Poland
Sopot is best known for its iconic wooden pier, the longest in Europe, along with its sandy beaches, colourful architecture and lively seaside promenade. One of the great things about the city is that most highlights are within easy walking distance, making it perfect to explore on foot. Curious what you shouldn’t miss during your visit? Below you’ll find our personal selection of the 8 best things to do and attractions in Sopot, Poland.
1. Walk along the Molo (the longest wooden pier in Europe)
The Sopot Pier, known locally as the Molo, is the city’s most iconic landmark and a must-visit during your stay. At 511.5 metres long, it holds the title of the longest wooden pier in Europe and stretches deep into the Baltic Sea, offering a unique perspective of the coastline. Originally opened in 1827, the pier has been renovated several times over the years and remains a central meeting point for both locals and visitors.
At the far end, you’re rewarded with panoramic views over Sopot Marina, the Baltic Sea, and the surrounding green hills. Whether you visit during the day or at sunset, the Molo is one of the most memorable experiences in Sopot.
In summer, entry costs 10 PLN (around €2.30), while in the low season access is free.
2. Take a sunset boat trip on the Baltic Sea
At the end of the pier, you’ll find Sopot Marina, the starting point for a variety of boat trips along the Baltic coast. While it’s already a pleasant place to stroll past the yachts and sailing boats, the real highlight is heading out onto the water.
A sunset boat trip is one of the absolute must-do experiences in Sopot. As the sun slowly sinks behind the rolling green hills of the Polish coast, the sky transforms into deep shades of orange and pink. It’s the perfect moment to toast with a glass of prosecco on deck while enjoying the unique view of the Sopot skyline from the water. You can easily book a magical sunset cruise in Sopot online in advance via GetYourGuide, so you’re guaranteed a spot on deck during the popular evening departures.
Book your boat trip in Sopot directly:
Below you’ll find three of the best boat trips departing directly from the pier in Sopot. You can easily book them in advance, often with free cancellation.
3. Relax in the thermal spas of Sopot
Sopot is not only known as a seaside resort on the Polish coast, but also as Poland’s leading spa destination. The city owes this reputation to the St. Wojciech spring, located around 800 metres beneath Sopot. This mineral-rich water contains bromide, iodine, magnesium and potassium. According to specialists, it is used in treatments that may support relaxation and provide relief for conditions such as respiratory issues, rheumatism and arthritis.
MERA Spa is the largest spa in Sopot and is located at the Sopot Marriott Resort & Spa. This extensive wellness centre features more than 35 treatment rooms, as well as saunas, swimming pools and hot tubs, making it one of the largest spa facilities in the region.
In addition, Sopot is home to several spa hotels offering a wide range of wellness treatments, often using the local thermal spring water. This makes Sopot an ideal destination for travellers looking to combine a beach holiday with relaxation and luxury wellness experiences.
4. Stroll around Bohaterów Monte Cassino (Monciak)
The beating heart of Sopot's city center is Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, affectionately known by locals as "Monciak." This lively, fully pedestrianized main street cuts straight through the town and leads directly to the famous wooden pier. The avenue bursts with energy and is lined with beautiful, historic townhouses, cozy outdoor terraces, fantastic restaurants, and charming souvenir shops. Whether you want to shop during the day or experience the vibrant local nightlife after dark, this is the place where it all happens.
5. Admire the fairytale Krzywy Domek (The Crooked House)
Located right on Monte Cassino Street, you will find one of the most photographed buildings in all of Poland: Krzywy Domek. The unique architecture of this "Crooked House" was designed in 2004 and inspired by fairytale book illustrations. Standing in front of its facade, the building looks almost liquid, as if you are viewing it through a funhouse mirror. It might make you feel a little dizzy just looking at it, but it is an absolute must-see that travelers from all over the world stop to admire.
6. Breathe in healing air at the Grzybki Inhalacyjne (Inhalation Mushrooms)
Sopot originally developed as a spa town, and you can still feel that heritage when walking through its beautifully designed coastal parks. Here you’ll find the so-called Grzybki Inhalacyjne, which literally translates to “inhalation mushrooms”. These are unique, mushroom-shaped fountains designed to release the mineral-rich steam from the St. Wojciech spring, located around 800 metres underground, into the air.
Benches surround these unique fountains, where locals and spa visitors alike gather to take advantage of the natural benefits. Feel free to take a seat, unwind, and breathe deeply of the healthy, iodine- and bromide-rich air. It is not only incredibly relaxing but also highly beneficial for your respiratory system.
Tip: Want to not only breathe in the mineral spring air, but also taste the water? Step into the nearby café Mamma Mia, where you can fill a cup for free. It’s also a great spot for a coffee, with spectacular views over the Baltic Sea and Sopot’s historic lighthouse.
7. Eat fresh fish at the Fishing Harbour (Przystań Rybacka)
One of the most authentic spots in Sopot is the small fishing harbour, Przystań Rybacka, located just outside the bustling city center. Here, you can get a genuine glimpse of local maritime life as bright fishing boats bob in the water and rest on the sand. The vibrant yellow, blue, and green wooden boats lined up on the beach might almost make you feel like you have arrived in the Caribbean. But make no mistake: this is the raw, artisanal heart of the Polish coast.
Every night, local fishermen venture out into the Baltic Sea, returning to the harbor the following morning with nets full of fresh catch. The fish is gutted and cleaned right on the beach, then sold directly to local restaurants, residents, and hungry visitors. This guarantees you are getting the freshest fish possible, often caught just hours before it lands on your plate.
For a simple yet outstanding seafood lunch, head over to the immensely popular Bar Przystań. Located right on the beach next to the harbor, this is where locals and savvy travelers gather to enjoy classic fish dishes from the traditional Polish coastal cuisine.
8. Go for a bike ride through Park Reagana in Sopot
Many travelers spend their entire holiday lingering in Sopot's lively city center, completely unaware of the beautiful nature waiting just around the corner. The coastline is absolutely perfect for an active cycling trip, thanks to a fantastic, flat bike path that runs parallel to the beach and connects Sopot directly with the neighboring city of Gdansk.
Follow this cycling path south and you’ll soon enter the impressive Park Reagana (Ronald Reagan Park). This vast green coastal park is a popular weekend spot for locals who come here to skate, run and walk. As you cycle through the wooded areas, you’ll pass scenic small lakes, wooden bridges, modern art sculptures and various recreational fields.
Tip: Fancy a coffee break during your bike ride? Scattered throughout Sopot (and also in Park Reagana), you’ll find several mobile bike cafés. Be sure to stop for a moment of rest along the way. Our absolute favourite on the menu? The delicious coconut latte!
Where to stay in Sopot? These are the best hotels and spa resorts
As Sopot is an official spa town, you’ll find plenty of hotels offering extensive wellness and spa facilities throughout the city. When choosing accommodation, it often comes down to a balance between location and amenities: do you prefer a large-scale resort with an extensive spa just outside the busy centre, or a more intimate boutique hotel right by the sea or in the heart of town?
During our trip, we tested two completely different (but equally fantastic) places to stay in Sopot. These are our personal recommendations:
Sopotorium Hotel & Medical Spa: ultimate rest and wellness in Sopot
Looking to truly dedicate your holiday in Sopot to relaxation and wellness? Then the Sopotorium Hotel & Medical Spa is the perfect choice. This modern four-star hotel is located just outside the hustle and bustle of the city center, nestled in a quiet, green area only a few minutes' walk from the beach.
The standout feature of this hotel is its impressive medical wellness center. Here, you can not only indulge in traditional massages and saunas but also benefit from specialized treatments using the mineral-rich water from the St. Wojciech spring. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, and the breakfast buffet is exceptionally varied and extensive. It is the absolute perfect base to fully recharge your batteries.

Hotel Eureka: boutique comfort with sea views
Do you prefer the intimacy of a small-scale accommodation, but don't want to miss out on the luxury of a wellness experience? Then Hotel Eureka is an absolute gem. This charming three-star hotel is located right on the promenade and offers a beautiful, calming view over the Baltic Sea.
The hotel beautifully combines historic architecture on the outside with a fresh, modern, and stylish interior on the inside. Although smaller in scale, Hotel Eureka still boasts excellent spa facilities, including a fitness room and a sauna. From here, you can easily walk along the bike path and the beach promenade straight to the bustling wooden pier.
Sopot's local cuisine: the tastiest restaurants and other hotspots
Polish cuisine is surprisingly modern and culinary. In Sopot you'll find a great mix of traditional flavors, trendy beach bars and upscale fine dining. Our four favorite hotspots not to be missed:
Fisherman Sopot: awarded multiple times as the best restaurant in Sopot. Every dish is beautifully presented, almost like a work of art, and delivers bold, intense flavours. Expect a local atmosphere combined with absolute top-quality dining.
Restauracja Polskie Smaki: the place in the city centre (with views of the pier) to experience authentic Polish cuisine with a modern twist. Be sure to try the pierogi, traditional dumplings filled with meat or fish.
M15 Sopot: a trendy and modern beach bar located right on the sand. Perfect for a relaxed lunch, a fresh salad or an Aperol Spritz at sunset. Make sure to save room for dessert!
L'Entre Villes: a unique, luxurious hotspot set in a historic villa that is over 100 years old. The food and regal atmosphere are in a higher price range, but are absolutely worth every zloty.
Practical tips for visiting Sopot
Sopot is ideally combined with a city trip to Gdansk and is located just a 30-minute drive from Gdansk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN). There are direct, budget-friendly flights to Gdansk from major European hubs like London, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam (with airlines such as KLM, Ryanair, and Wizz Air), making the Polish coast incredibly accessible from anywhere in Europe. Check here for all flight options to Gdansk on Skyscanner.
From the airport, you can easily reach Sopot by train, taxi, or rental car. Once you arrive in town, the compact center makes it incredibly easy to explore everything on foot. However, if you want to discover more of the region—such as Gdynia, the stunning Hel Peninsula, or the scenic Polish countryside—a rental car is the perfect choice for ultimate flexibility. Having your own wheels allows you to seamlessly combine Sopot with the rest of the Tri-City area while discovering the incredible versatility of Northern Poland at your own pace.
We recommend renting a car in advance via Sunny Cars, so you can enjoy a fully all-inclusive, hassle-free road trip to nearby Gdynia or the green Polish countryside.
