1. Stare Miasto: fairytale-like and centrally located stay
Want to stay right in the historic heart of the city during your city break to Krakow? Then Stare Miasto, or Old Town, without a doubt the best district to stay in. This historic district is the vibrant heart of Krakow, surrounded by the iconic green park ring ‘The Planty. The centerpiece is the Rynek Główny: the largest medieval market square in Europe. Here you'll feast your eyes on the impressive Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) and the beautiful St. Mary's Church. But you can also walk straight from your hotel here to the Wawel Castle. The ideal place for when you are on your first city break in Krakow.
Also great: from Stare Miasto you can walk to the Jewish districts Kazimierz and Podgórze in about 20 minutes. This makes it an ideal base for exploring different sides of Krakow. Do keep in mind that this is also the most touristy area of the city, so in peak season it can feel livelier and a bit more crowded.
Our personal hotel tip in Stare Miasto
Looking for a stylish and centrally located place to stay in Krakow? Then Stare Miasto is a great choice. We stayed at TRIBE Krakow Old Town and found it to be a perfect base for a city trip. The hotel features a modern and stylish interior, spacious rooms, and a great location close to both the historic center and the main train station. It’s also situated on the quieter edge of the Old Town, so you get all the benefits of staying central without the noise and crowds in the evening and at night.
2. Kazimierz: Krakow's vibrant Jewish quarter
Want to experience Krakow in a more local and creative way? Then Kazimierz might just be the best neighborhood to stay in. This former Jewish quarter is now known as the cultural heart of the city, where historic buildings and synagogues sit alongside vintage cafés, cozy wine bars, and trendy restaurants. It has a completely different vibe from the Old Town: rawer, more creative, and full of character.
Kazimierz by day is the place to soak up culture and learn more about Jewish history, but at night the neighborhood really comes alive. The focal point is Plac Nowy, a cozy square in the middle of which you get the tastiest zapiekanki (traditional Polish pizza baguettes) in town.
Our personal hotel tip in Kazimierz
Looking for a trendy place to stay in Kazimierz? Then PURO Kraków Kazimierz is one of the best hotels in Krakow. This modern design hotel is located right in the heart of the neighborhood and perfectly matches the creative vibe of Kazimierz. It features a sleek interior, comfortable rooms, a welcoming lobby, and a rooftop terrace with views over the city.
What we especially like about this location is its setting. From the hotel, you can easily walk to the best restaurants, coffee spots, and bars in Kazimierz, while also reaching the Old Town in no time at all.
3. Podgórze: a peaceful, local stay by the river in Krakow
Looking for a quieter and more local area to stay in Krakow? Then Podgórze is a great choice. This up-and-coming neighborhood is located across the Vistula River, opposite Kazimierz. It offers a completely different vibe from the busy Old Town, with wide streets, fewer tourists, modern coffee spots, and a more relaxed pace. From Podgórze, you can easily walk to Kazimierz via the iconic Bernatka pedestrian bridge, decorated with hanging sculptures and countless love locks.
Podgórze used to be an independent town and has a fascinating history. During World War II, it was home to the Krakow Jewish ghetto, and there are still several places that commemorate this past, such as Ghetto Heroes Square and the famous Schindler’s Factory.
What we especially like about Podgórze is the combination of tranquility and a good location. You are just outside the hustle and bustle, but still easily walk to the center of Krakow. That makes this an ideal neighborhood if you want to experience Krakow a little more in a local way, without being far from the highlights.
Our hotel tip in Kazimierz
A great place to stay in Podgórze is Hotel Qubus Kraków. The hotel is located directly on the Vistula River. What makes this property extra special is its wellness area on the top floor, where you’ll find a swimming pool and hot tub with impressive views over the city. After a day of sightseeing, it’s a great way to relax and unwind during your city trip. The hotel also offers a gym, sauna, and steam room.
4. Kleparz: budget-friendly stays close to Krakow’s city center
If you’re looking to stay in Krakow on a budget without straying far from the city center, Kleparz is a great option. Located just north of Stare Miasto, this area often flies under the radar, even though it offers a nice balance of affordable hotels, a more local feel, and a very central location.
In fact, from Kleparz you can walk to the historic center of Krakow in about ten to fifteen minutes. This puts you just outside the hustle and bustle of the Old Town, but still close to the main attractions. Krakow's main train station is also nearby, which makes this district extra practical for a city break or a short stopover.
Our personal tip for staying in Kleparz
Looking for a budget-friendly and charming place to stay in this area? Then Yarden Hotel by Artery Hotels is a great recommendation and a solid budget tip for Krakow! This characterful 3-star hotel is set in a beautifully renovated historic building and is located about a ten-minute walk from Rynek Główny. It’s an ideal option if you want to stay affordably while still being close to the heart of the city.
5. Piasek: a quiet and family-friendly stay close to Krakow’s Old Town
Travelling to Krakow with children and looking for a quiet yet central area? Then Piasek is a great choice. This neighbourhood is located right next to Stare Miasto, but feels much more relaxed than the busy historic centre. Piasek is a green and well-organised area with wide streets, beautiful historic buildings, and good tram connections. It’s especially ideal for families: you’re close to restaurants, parks, and the city centre, while staying away from the crowds and nightlife of areas like Kazimierz.
Our personal tips for family-friendly hotels in Krakow
H11 ApartHotel Krakow
A great option for this is H11 ApartHotel. This stylish aparthotel is located in Piasek, close to the Old Town, and offers modern apartments with a kitchenette. This gives you a bit more flexibility during your city break in Krakow, for example to prepare breakfast yourself. The apartments are also spacious, which is especially convenient when travelling with children.
The Hidden Nook
Looking for a place with a bit of character? Then the beautiful lofts at The Hidden Nook are a great option. The lofts are spacious and feel much more homely than a standard hotel, while still being close to Krakow’s city center. They also come with a private kitchen, giving you extra flexibility during your stay.
Luxury city break in Krakow: royal stays around Wawel Castle

Our personal luxury hotel tips in Krakow
Stradom House Hotel & Spa, Autograph Collection Krakow
A fantastic tip for a luxury stay in Krakow is Stradom House, Autograph Collection. This stunning 5-star hotel is perfectly located between the Old Town and Kazimierz, giving you the best of both worlds. Set in a historic building, it blends original architectural details with a warm, modern interior full of design influences. Alongside the stylish rooms, you’ll also find a luxurious spa with a swimming pool, wellness facilities, and a modern fitness area.
What we personally also highly recommend is Hedwig’s bar, located inside the hotel. This unique cocktail bar is set in a former chapel and is arguably one of the most beautiful bars in Krakow. We enjoyed delicious cocktails with tasty bites here, and the interior alone makes it an experience in itself.
Balthazar Design Hotel Krakow
Another unique luxury hotel tip in Krakow is Balthazar Design Hotel. This stylish boutique hotel is located on the famous Royal Route, right between Wawel Castle and Rynek Główny.
The location alone is already fantastic, but the hotel itself is truly a gem. Housed in a 19th-century historic building on foundations dating back to the 16th century, it blends historical charm with a bold, modern interior. Think velvet sofas, warm tones, striking artwork, and luxurious details that give it an almost New York- or London-style boutique feel. The rooms are stylish and intimate, and everywhere you look you can see the attention to design and atmosphere. The welcome is also something special: guests are greeted with amaretto and biscotti. It’s no surprise that Balthazar Design Hotel is even mentioned in the Michelin Guide.
