Looking for an underrated and diverse road trip destination in Europe? Discover Lower Silesia, a fascinating region in southwest Poland filled with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, mysterious castles and unique local traditions. Over the centuries, this region has been shaped by Czech, Prussian and German influences, creating a rich cultural heritage that can still be seen everywhere today. From the vibrant city of Wrocław to hidden gems tucked away in the mountains and forests, Lower Silesia offers one of the most surprising travel experiences in Poland. In this guide, we share the best things to do in Lower Silesia, practical travel tips and a few hidden gems for an unforgettable road trip through southwest Poland.

1. The Peace Churches of Jawor and Świdnica (UNESCO)

In Lower Silesia, you’ll find two extraordinary Peace Churches (Kościoły Pokoju). These remarkable buildings have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2001, and for good reason: they are the largest wooden religious buildings in Europe.

The churches date back to the 17th century and were built after the Thirty Years’ War. As a symbol of reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants, Protestants were granted permission to build these churches, but only under strict and unusual conditions. They were only allowed to use renewable materials such as wood, straw and clay, no nails or towers were permitted, construction had to be completed within a single year, and the buildings were not allowed to resemble traditional churches from the outside. The result? Stunning half-timbered churches that have miraculously remained completely preserved to this day.

Although both churches share the same fascinating history, each has its own unique character. During your road trip through Lower Silesia, you can easily visit both of them.

The Peace Church of Jawor: The authentic gem

The Peace Church in Jawor, located around 70 kilometres from Wrocław, has a wonderfully authentic and intimate atmosphere. Since it is still relatively undiscovered by international tourists, you can explore the church in complete peace and quiet. Because it feels much less crowded than the church in Świdnica, this secretly ended up being our favourite visit of the two.

The church is open daily to visitors (from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays and from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on weekends). At the entrance, you’ll receive an audio guide available in both English and Polish.

The Peace Church in Świdnica: A living monument

The Peace Church in Świdnica is just as impressive, but feels larger and more lively. It is still an active place of worship to this day, with Protestant services held every Sunday morning at 10:00 AM. As soon as you step inside, you don’t know where to look first. The wide walls and towering ceilings are covered from floor to ceiling with stunning Baroque decorations, biblical scenes and inscriptions.

During the high season, the church is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and on Sundays from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Here too, you can listen to an audio guide that explains the rich history of the building.

Tip: If you don’t have your own transport or are staying in Wrocław, it’s very easy to join a guided day tour from the city that visits both Peace Churches in one day.

2. The lush and mysterious Książ Castle

Our absolute highlight of the road trip through Lower Silesia was without a doubt Książ Castle (Zamek Książ). This is not just any castle. It is actually the third-largest castle in Poland and is dramatically located on a rocky hill surrounded by lush forested landscapes, about 45 kilometres from Wrocław. Many travellers visit it as a day trip, but if you have the time, it’s highly recommended to stay on the estate itself in one of the beautiful hotel rooms. View the rooms at Hotel Książ here.

Combine with Wrocław: Chances are you’ll start or end your trip through Lower Silesia in the region’s capital. Książ Castle is perfect to visit as a day trip from the city. Curious about what to do there? Then also read our complete guide with the best tips and things to do in Wrocław.

The mystery of Project Riese

Behind all the Baroque splendour and grandeur of the castle lies a chilling and mysterious history from World War II. In 1943, the Nazi leadership (under the direction of Albert Speer) seized the castle. It became part of the massive, secret underground construction project known as Project Riese.

Thousands of forced laborers were made to carve out an immense network of tunnels and bunkers beneath the castle and in the surrounding mountains. To this day, the purpose of this remains shrouded in mystery: was it intended as a headquarters for Adolf Hitler, or was it a secret weapons factory? During your visit, you can not only admire the royal chambers and expansive gardens, but also descend into these impressive underground tunnels.

Practical tip: planning to visit the castle? Make sure to set aside at least half a day, as there is a lot to see. For the ultimate experience, we recommend buying both a ticket for the castle interiors and for the underground tunnels.

3. Craft and history at Muzeum Papiernictwa in Lower Silesia

If you love unique, historic places, a stop at the Muzeum Papiernictwa (Paper Museum) in Duszniki-Zdrój is an absolute must on your Lower Silesia road trip. The museum is housed in a stunning, brightly coloured 16th-century paper mill. It is one of the few remaining historic paper mills in Europe, and its architecture is incredibly photogenic!

During your visit, you’ll follow an engaging audio tour that takes you through the history of paper. You’ll learn how important this region once was for paper production and how, for centuries, paper has been handmade using materials such as textile scraps.

The best part of the museum? During an interactive workshop, you can get your hands into the paper pulp and create your own sheet of handmade paper. It’s a wonderful, hands-on craft experience that makes your road trip even more memorable.

4. Architectural masterpiece: Centennial Hall in Wrocław (UNESCO)

The third and final official UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lower Silesia is located in the vibrant regional capital, Wrocław. The Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia) is a true masterpiece of early modernist architecture. It was built between 1911 and 1913 by the famous architect Max Berg, in honour of the 100th anniversary of the victory over Napoleon.

What makes this building so special is its pioneering use of reinforced concrete. At the time, the enormous dome (with a diameter of 65 metres) was the largest structure of its kind in the world. Both inside and out, the building is an impressive feat of engineering that will quite literally leave you speechless.

Extra tip: right behind the Centennial Hall you’ll find the Wrocław Multimedia Fountain. During the warmer months (from May to October), you can watch a spectacular show of water, music and light every full hour. It’s a perfect spot to relax at the end of the afternoon. And make sure to also take a walk through the Japanese Garden!

Hidden gems and unique crafts in Lower Silesia

Lower Silesia is one of the most diverse regions in Poland. Its hilly, green landscapes make it perfect for a varied road trip. Alongside its impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites and castles, there are two unique industrial and craft-related places that truly complete your journey.

Manufaktura w Bolesławcu: world-famous Polish ceramics

The Polish town of Bolesławiec is world-famous for its distinctive handmade ceramics. Since the Middle Ages, local artisans have been producing beautiful pottery here, known for its deep blue colours and unique dot and “peacock eye” patterns.

We visited the Manufaktura w Bolesławcu factory during our road trip through Lower Silesia. During a guided tour, you’ll get a unique behind-the-scenes look: from raw clay to the hand-stamping and painting of the ceramics. It’s impressive to see the precision and patience with which the artisans work here.

Local food tip: feeling hungry after all that creativity? Drive 15 minutes to Kruszyna Inn. This is a cozy, traditional spot where locals love to come for a hearty Polish meal. You know you’re in the right place!

The former coal mine Stara Kopalnia in Wałbrzych

Although most mines have now been closed, the wider Silesia region is still one of the most active mining areas in Europe. In Wałbrzych, the former coal mine Stara Kopalnia (“Old Mine”) has been transformed into an impressive industrial museum and cultural centre.

This used to be the largest coal mine in the city. Today, you can go underground with a guided tour (often led by former miners who share their stories with real passion!). You’ll walk through the old tunnels and learn about the incredibly hard working conditions. It’s almost unimaginable that people once laboured here at depths of up to 800 metres.

The mine is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and can only be visited with a guided tour. After your visit, don’t forget to climb the old observation tower for a stunning view over the rolling landscapes of Wałbrzych!

Food tip: On the site you’ll find the trendy restaurant Coolturalna Montownia, an ideal spot for a lunch or drink before or after your visit.
