If there is one place in The The Netherlands that truly makes you feel like you’re abroad, it’s the so-called “Tuscany of The Netherlands.” Nestled in the rolling hills of South Limburg, just outside the village of Eys, you’ll find what we believe is the most stunning viewpoint in the region. We were beyond thrilled when someone tipped us off to this hidden gem during our road trip through South Limburg, and now we’re passing it on to you. Want to take in the breathtaking view over the Dutch Tuscany yourself? Keep reading to find out exactly how to get there.
A scenic drive through the hills of Southern Limburg
We were wildly excited when we booked our road trip through Southern Limburg in a 100% electric Volkswagen T2 van. It was an adventure that had been on our bucket list for quite some time, and now it was finally becoming a reality. For a moment, we considered heading to the Veluwe instead, but the rolling hills of Southern Limburg were calling our name, so we went for it. And what an adventure it turned out to be. Read more about our experience with the electric Volkswagen T2 van!
Along the way, we also drove parts of the beautiful Mergelland Route, which, by the way, is often referred to as the most beautiful driving route in The Netherlands. It’s an absolute must-do when you're on vacation or a road trip in South Limburg!
This is the place to be: parking location and walking route
The route to the viewpoint is a sight to behold in itself, but just wait until you arrive. We’re pretty sure your heart will skip a beat too. Keep in mind that the viewpoint is easiest to reach by car or by bike (especially if you're local). Here’s how to get there:
These days, almost everyone uses Google Maps, so simply type in “Moorenheideweg.” Make sure to select the one in Eys. To double-check, have a look at the map: you should see a junction where Moorenheideweg, Krekelbergweg, and Eyserbosweg meet. If you see that, you're in the right place. Once you arrive, pass the huge tree at the intersection and turn onto Moorenheideweg. On your left, you’ll find a small parking area where you can leave your car.
Once you’ve parked your car (or bike), you can follow this route to reach the viewpoint. Leave the parking area and continue walking along Moorenheideweg. On your left, you’ll soon spot a path leading into the forest, take this path and follow it all the way through. Essentially, you’ll cross the forest, just like the orange line shows in the picture. When you reach the edge of the forest, you’ll come to a clearing with a stunning view over the Tuscany of The Netherlands. There’s also a bench here where you can sit down and fully enjoy the scenery.
When we visited, the moors were bursting with colorful flowers, a perfect bonus for your photos!
Great places to stay in the area
Want to enjoy the Tuscany of The Netherlands a little longer? Then spend a night (or two!) nearby. Around Eys, you’ll find plenty of beautiful places to stay. Think cozy B&Bs with hilltop views, charming holiday cottages nestled in nature, or even a luxurious wellness retreat in a renovated farmhouse. Our favorites? They are Panorama Sousberg B&B for the views, Landhotel Heuvelzicht if you love peace and quiet, and Hostel the Gate for a comfortable and charming base. Whichever place you choose, you’re guaranteed to wake up feeling like you’re on holiday in Italy.
