The Rhoonse Grienden, what an insanely beautiful area this is for a nice long walk. Not only because you find yourself in an oasis of tranquility here, but also because you have the chance to spot a beaver. Because let's face it, how fun is that? Of course you have to be quiet and patient, because they are not easy to spot. But even without spotting beavers, the nature reserve is definitely worth a visit. In the Rhoonse Grienden walking area you zigzag between the willows along the banks of the Old Meuse. A jewel on the Island of IJsselmonde!
The Rhoonse Grienden: a beautiful hiking area
Spring is our favorite time to go hiking and discover new places in our own region. For example, we recently ended up at the Rhoonse Grienden hiking area, an insanely beautiful area along the banks of the Oude Maas River. A place particularly known for its rows of pollard willows. You walk here on adventurous narrow paths through floodplain forest and a veritable willow jungle. Willow wood has been made from the pollarded willows for centuries, and to this day it is still done in the Rhoonse Grienden.
The special landscape of The Rhoonse Grienden
The Rhoonse Grienden borders the Carnisse Grienden. Together they form a special freshwater tidal landscape. This means that the areas are under the influence of ebb and flood. The fresh water of the Oude Maas flows in and out of the areas twice a day. This creates a special flora and fauna. This area is never quiet, especially in spring. Birds you can spot there are the kingfisher, great tit, chiffchaff, garden warbler and also the blackhead. And if you don't manage to spot them, you are guaranteed to hear them chirping happily.
One of the most special places is Klein Profijt, the willow jungle between the Rhoon and Carnisse Grienden. This is a case of walking through a pristine patch of willow, but oh how beautiful it is there! The paths are well maintained, but the rest is completely in the hands of Mother Nature.
Tip: park in the parking lot next to the Rhoon marina. Navigate to Albrandswaardsedijk. From the parking lot you can walk right into the Rhoonse Grienden. From here you can follow the red arrows for a beautiful walk through this special area.
Farm the Buytenhof
After a walk through the Rhoonse Grienden, you can of course treat yourself to a cup of coffee and something tasty. And for that we have discovered an incredibly nice place: Farm the Buytenhof. As the name somewhat gives away, this is a hot spot where you can enjoy farm life. Take a look in the store where they sell sustainable and pure products from their own land, but be sure to visit the picking garden and the pear and apple trees!
Farm the Buytenhof is open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. // Address: Rijsdijk 98 in Rhoon.
Discover IJsselmonde Island
The Rhoonse Grienden is one of the beautiful hiking areas on the island of IJsselmonde, the area between Rotterdam and Dordrecht. A region in South Holland that harbors a lot of beauty. Think typical Dutch villages, tasty hotspots, historic dikes, even some castles, but above all beautiful hiking and biking routes. On the website Discover IJsselmonde you will find even more beautiful routes on Eiland IJsselmonde. And all in the middle of the Randstad!
