Kos is one of the most popular Greek islands and not without reason. There is a wonderful climate, fine beaches and more than enough to explore. One of the fun trips on Kos is to the colorful mountain village of Zia. This traditional village breathes Greece and you are therefore surrounded by nice souvenir shops, cozy tavernas and art galleries. How do I get to Zia?
Zia is located about 14 kilometers southwest of Kos Town. The beautiful mountain village is hidden among green forests, close to the village of Asfendiou on the mountainside of Dikeos.
There is no public transportation to the village, so je can only reach Zia by cab. From Kos Town to Zia costs about €30,00 there and also €30,00 back. Quite expensive, but if you ask us it is absolutely worth it. Due to its idyllic location, Zia offers breathtaking views of the entire island.
Do you possess a rental car on Kos, then you can also get there easily. Just before the village you will find a large parking lot. Zia is a tourist spot on the island, though, so keep an eye out for crowds. It is recommended to arrive in Zia well before sunset.
The sights of Zia
Zia is only a small village, so there are not a lot of attractions. Directly adjacent to the village is the natural park of the same name Zia. So a visit to the village and the nature park can easily be combined. You can mostly spot animals here and it is nice hiking. There are also three churches at the entrance to the village, one of which offers a magnificent view during sunset. Furthermore, the village is mainly about the fine Greek atmosphere and there are plenty of nice hotspots and stores.
Lodging in Zia
The mountain village of Zia is perhaps one of the most beautiful places to stay on the island. Although you are quite a distance from the beach, there are many accommodations that offer a swimming pool. In addition, with a rental car, you can get to the coast in no time.
Admiring the sunset
Zia has by far the best sunset view on Kos. With a panoramic view of the entire north coast of Kos, this is the place to be. So don't forget to bring your camera and reserve a spot at one of the nice hotspots. Special sunset excursions are organized to Zia, so restaurant reservations are a must.
The best hotspots in Zia
Two of the nicest restaurants are Taverna Olympia and restaurant Oromedon. The best time to make reservations depends on the season, so be sure to check when you contact the restaurant.
1. The Watermill of Zia
The nicest hot spot in Zia is without a doubt The Watermill Of Zia. You will not find this spot on the main road of the village, but a little more hidden on the hill. It is one of those places that you expect to be immensely popular on Instagram, but the hot spot is actually not on social media at all. Housed in an old restored watermill, The Watermill of Zia has been transformed into a traditional cafe with colorful tables, plates and decorations. You can stop in for a drink here (the homemade lemonade is top notch), but you can also have a great meal here.

2. Taverna Olympia
Taverna Olympia is a cozy restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine, friendly staff and a top location with panoramic views of Kos. This restaurant is also good value for money. We found the Greek specialties, such as moussaka and the zucchini cookies, definitely worth it! Olympia consists of two restaurants: Taverna & Garden.

3. Art Gallery Stergos Saroukos
It is not a restaurant, yet we find that the Art Gallery of Stergos Saroukos belongs in the list of hotspots in Zia. In fact, this authentic art gallery is a super nice find if you love Greek paintings. The art gallery is not necessarily photogenic (and even a bit of a mess), but you can actually see that the painter works with passion on his art. And that is exactly what makes this spot so much fun.

4. Oromedon Restaurant
Oromedon is perhaps one of the most popular restaurants on Kos. This restaurant also offers a magnificent view. Traditional Greek dishes are served at Oromedon. Would you like to eat here? Then you will have to reserve a place on time. We were unfortunately too late, but when we come back to the island of Kos we will definitely try this restaurant!
