Here, the first Polish kings were crowned, and the church houses the famous 900-year-old Romanesque cathedral doors, also called the "Gniezno Doors. With 18 reliefs, these impressive bronze doors tell the life story of St. Adalbert, the patron saint of Poland.
Interestingly, these doors are often seen as an early example of what might be considered a precursor to modern comic strips. These doors tell the story of St. Adalbert in a series of picture panels, like a kind of medieval comic book depicting the story step by step.
The cathedral also houses the tombs of St. Adalbert himself and other important historical figures, making it a spiritual and historical site of great significance. Also, don't forget to climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside.

This figure of the pagan warrior leader, complete with a long spear and round shield, points directly toward the hill where he is said to have seen the eagle’s nest: the mythical “nest” where Gniezno was born. It almost feels as if he is saying: “This is where we build our nest!” The green shores of Lake Jelonek are already a beautiful spot in the city, but this story makes a walk here even more special.
4. Hike the Royal Trail past kings and rabbits in Gniezno
A unique and playful way to explore Gniezno is the Royal Trail (Szlak Królewski). This route blends history with a fun twist: you follow the path of five kings from the Piast dynasty who were crowned here, as well as 15 unique rabbit statues scattered throughout the city. Why rabbits? The Polish word for king (król) closely resembles the word for rabbit (królik), which is why rabbits have become a symbol of “little kings” in Gniezno.
The route is well signposted and you can download a special app called “Królika GOń”. With this app, your walk turns into a fun scavenger hunt, where you collect points and discover the story of Gniezno in an interactive way.
