1. Pay a visit to A Seal in Stellendam
A very interesting activity you can do on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee is to visit seal sanctuary A Seal in Stellendam. Here, mostly young seal pups are taken in, cared for and eventually released. These seal pups have often lost their mothers and are found weakened along the coasts of South Holland and Zeeland. Sick and injured seals are also taken in at A Seal. On average, the seals stay here for about 3 months. As soon as they are completely healthy again and can survive independently in the wild, they are released.
The information inside the visitor center is aimed primarily at children, who can learn playfully about the care of seals, as well as about the life of the seal itself. There are also regular exhibits here on topics such as nature and the environment. Extra fun is the opportunity to feed the seals.
2. Take a look at the Bird Observatory Tide
In nature reserve De Scheelhoek you will find one of the most photogenic bird observatories in the Netherlands, namely the Tij. To get to the bird observatory you first take a walk of about 10 to 15 minutes through the nature reserve. Keep in mind that it can be very muddy on rainy days. At the end of the trail, you walk through a kind of bunker into the observatory. It is an insanely beautiful structure from which you can spot birds.
3. Lunch at Sweet or Salty
Both near the bird observatory and at A Seal you will find the hot spot Sweet or Salty. A large restaurant with a beautiful terrace located on the Haringvliet. Therefore, you can no doubt imagine that on summer days it is quickly full here. The views over the water are beautiful.
4. Visit the seaside town of Ouddorp
Ouddorp is a pleasant village with many nice stores and terraces, but is also a very well-known seaside resort of the Netherlands. In summer, the village is often crowded by German tourists, but because of its ideal location on the island, Dutch tourists also come from Zeeland and South Holland.
If you visit Ouddorp, it is definitely fun to walk through the streets and browse around. For a great coffee and richly filled bagel, we can recommend the hotspot New Harvest Inn recommend. And eand fun tip from our travel advisory from Breakzy was the store next to Mill De Hoop. Here in fact, they sell all their own ground mixes.
5. Fan out on the beach
Getting a breath of fresh air on the beach is always nice, regardless of the season. Along the west coast of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee you will find a number of beautiful beaches where you can take a walk every day of the year. But there is only one beach where you can get a breath of fresh air and at the same time feast your eyes on the impressive skills of the many kitesurfers. For this you have to be at location 'Ouddorp Beach‘.
6. Visit the atmospheric town of Middelharnis
Middelharnis is a small atmospheric town on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The harbor is the real eye-catcher of the village. You can take a stroll along the beautiful boats or take a seat at one of the cozy terraces along the harbor. A nice hotspot in Middelharnis is Brasserie 't Vingerling. Reservations are recommended.
Want to extend your time on the island with a night? Then without a doubt we can offer you bed and breakfast Casa Davina tipping. We enjoyed sleeping here for two nights and the care was tip top. You spend the night in a cozy barn in the backyard. It is very comfortable there!
