With its charming cobblestone streets, quaint white houses and rich history, Thorn is a hidden gem in the south of the Netherlands. This picturesque town in the province of Limburg is often overlooked, but those who visit it will quickly understand why Thorn is known as the white pearl of Limburg. It feels like stepping back in time, while its unique atmosphere reminds you of the white villages of southern Europe. Wondering what Thorn has to offer? Here are our best tips for visiting this special little town.
Thorn, Limburg: a piece of abroad in your own country
Thorn immediately evokes a vacation feeling. The white facades of the houses, the narrow streets and the historical ambiance make you feel like you are abroad. The town is reminiscent of the white villages in Spain or Greece, but at the same time has a character all its own. Thorn is an ideal destination for a day out or a short stop during a road trip through Limburg.
What makes Thorn so special?
Thorn is small, but it is packed with history. The town was once founded as a mini-state with a unique structure. Namely, it was a women's state, where the abbey and surrounding houses were governed by noblewomen. These women, also called the Stift ladies, lived in stately canon houses surrounding the central abbey church. Thorn even had its own currency and jurisdiction. The arrival of Napoleon brought an end to this special mini-state, but the traces of this rich past are still visible everywhere.
The Abbey Church is the historical centerpiece of Thorn
The imposing Abbey Church is the beating heart of Thorn and an absolute must-see. This centuries-old structure breathes history and is a reminder of the town's glory days. Take a walk through the church, admire the Gothic architecture and listen to the stories about life in the former abbey complex.
