Hotel Arsenaal in the heart of Delft is a place where history and charm come together. Upon entering, it immediately feels like a warm welcome: a friendly welcome, an atmospheric bar for cozy drinks and a stylish interior. It is the perfect base for a city break in Delft. With the bustling square De Markt and the Brabantse Turfmarkt just steps away, you are surrounded by cozy stores and delicious eateries. We stayed at Hotel Arsenaal and are happy to share our experience!

The interesting story behind Hotel Arsenal

Each stone tells its own story and through each window you look at a different past'. That Hotel Arsenal is a special place is obvious by now. But where does the story of this place begin? For that we go back in time to the year 1601 when, by order of the States of Holland, an armory was erected at this location. This, then, is where the hotel gets its name from. Cannons, firearms, bullets and much more weaponry were stored in the arsenal. When in 1987, after several expansions, the building remained too small, it was decided to move the entire storage to a location in Amsterdam. With this, the arsenal lost its now centuries-old function.

One of the outbuildings next to the arsenal was used in the 1600s to store goods such as tea, coffee, spices, cotton and Chinese porcelain. This is during times of the VOC in which Delft as a VOC city plays a major role. The Chinese porcelain is inspiration to imitation with which eventually the world famous Delft Blue is born. Around 1800 this building becomes vacant and becomes part of the then still existing armory.

But over the years the building has also served as a city carpentry yard, a court for single women, a large brewery and an army museum. In short, a place with a rich history and obviously a valuable National Monument in Delft!
